I'll be joining the CRF450X ranks in the next couple weeks...sort of. I'll have the bike, but I won't be riding it. The bike I'm buying is a steet titled & fully legal 2005, with a locked up transmission (classic 3rd/5th seizure most likely). All stock mechanically, other than the Baja Designs dual sport kit.

Anyway, I'll obviously be tearing the motor fully apart for inspection and repair, and doing what I can to prep it for a (hopefully) much longer life in dual sport service. For the next couple months my wrenching time will be very limited, so I don't really plan to have it running until maybe later in June. In the mean time I'll continue riding my 'lowly' KLX250S, which is staying in the stable for the time being.

The CRF doesn't have terribly high hours/miles...although the exact numbers are unknown. Best guess is under 100 hours of fairly easy use. Inspection will dictate whether I replace the piston or valves at this time...but when I do, I'm planning for a TRX-type piston and stainless valves.

It will need a big tank, as I'd like around 150 miles range in dual sport mode...so I'm curious about others experiences with the Acerbis 4.1 and the IMS 4.0. Comments on fit, durability, level of radiator protection (or lack thereof), etc? I'm used to riding with this type of tank on my KLX, so the extra width really doesn't concern me.

I run the Ascerbis big tank which looks like it might provide some protection, but trust me you can still bend those radiators.
the big tank is nice, but I would still put guards on it if you can.

Here's my new to me one, only needs a little work. The reason for the partial disassembly is the transmission failure noted in my previous post. The project begins...

Hey DaveRMS, what tank/fairing is that?

It's a 2010 kit from Honda Europe. This bike was #108 in the 2010 Dakar, piloted by the previous owner, built by RMS. It's actually 4 separate tanks.

That is sweet! Does it use a fuel pump or are the fuel tanks just slightly higher than the carb?

Just scored this 05 R. Picking it up tonight. I have bled orange forever, but grew up riding red. This should be a fun transition into open class singles and a great addition to my stable. It will not be used for long slab trips, but should be a great intermediate setup for days when my 990 is just too big and the 250 exc too small.

Completely street legal and a lot of goodies already installed.

I plan to add a Rekluse and Cush hub within the next month.

    • Set up for DS/Woods riding
    • mx tech suspension
    • 18" rear wheel,
    • scotts billet rear rotor guard,
    • skid plate,
    • asv front brake lever,
    • works connection clutch lever and quick adjust perch,
    • baja designs baja kit with led rear tail-brake light,
    • baja designs key switch,
    • scotts upper triple clamp with scotts stabilizer mount,
    • cycra hard guards,
    • ims 3.2 gallon oversize fuel tank,
    • crf450x rear sets with factory kick stand,
    • ims oversize pegs,
    • 13 oz heavy flywheel
    • and pro taper bars.

May be of interest to some of you guys. I have a baja designs aux oil tank and acerbis 6.6 tank for sale. Both brand new. Listed in parts.
Help a brother out! Trying to finance a baja trip and picked up an xr650r. No need for the 450 parts. Make some legit offers. Thanks!

Has anyone put a fan on their 450X, that was not the stock one Honda sells. Honda price is way to much. I have braces on the radiator and I'm having a hard time finding a fan that's thin enough to fit behind the braces.
