Try to link up with someone in your area with a big bike like yours and lots of experience riding it in the sand. Getting one on one tips and seeing someone using the proper technique first hand will make learning how to ride here a much more safe and enjoyable experience.

Not sure if you are planning to go to the Polar Bear rally but that would be great opportunity to get the ball rolling.

Yup. Throw some knobs on and learn sand. You'll have a lot more places to ride then.

If you intend to ride off road, don't have any experience, want to enhance your riding pleasure with confidence, do yourself a favor and take an off road course. You will thank yourself later. Possibly save yourself from a lot of frustration, pain and possibly $$$.

Hope you find some good spots lt88. I used up my week working on the xr650. You're probably right about the rain. And funny thing is the best conditions are during and after the rain.
    Should be a Good Friday.

Having lived in the area for 5 years, I never rode Croom. We did discover a great Citrus County riding area tho. Keeping in mind that I left there in 2011, and things change.

From Inverness, go north on 41 towards Hernando. At the 41/200 fork in Hernando, stay left. A mile or so later, look for a dirt road on the right side... seems like it was the second dirt road after the 41/200 intersection. When you pull back in 300-400 yards, there's a turn around/parking/unloading area. Turn in HERE.

We rode that area going north from there, in between 41 & 200 several times and I'm not sure we saw it all. There are actually some pretty good hill climbs back in there, and most of it is hard packed dirt with some sand in areas but not a lot.

Looking at next week for some riding at croom / Ocala national forest.

Used to go there way back in the 1999-2005 timeframe. There were good trails just south of day use area #2 and I think they had just logged and torn up a lot of the area north of #2...that's how long its been since I was there. Started on an oil injected RT180, moved up to a brand new KDX200, a KX250 (no F, they weren't even out then), a YZ426F and I think the 04 YZ450F was the last bike I had.

The only other "trails" I've ridden were at ONF. We camped at Lake Delancy which was beautiful, ride to the other side of the lake and go swimming every day. Other than that, it was 30 miles from civilization down a dirt road and everything we rode on was a boring fire road or a short trail that connected to another boring fire road. Croom has some excellent single track that you get spoiled with and a lot of other places seem boring.

We pretty much switched to only riding MX going to Waldo and Hardrock because Croom got too crowded, too many quads and there was a pretty bad drought back then so the place was a dust bowl.

I''ll be up there this weekend working the USAC bicycle races in Brooksville. We'll be camped out at the days inn right at 75 and 50.

Made my first real attempt at taking the DRjr off-road today. Set a destination for Croom, walked up to the office window, told the friendly fella I had no idea what I was doing or how to go about doing it. I tell ya, they've got a wonderfully friendly and apparently thoughtful staff there. He must've made note of how they would keep track of me since I was by myself several times, making sure I wasn't lying there, injured and all alone at the end of the day.

My experience reflects many of the sentiments distributed around this thread. Being my first time there, my main goal was to just familiarize myself with the area, rules, protocol, and other niceties of sharing that space with other riders (users). I felt very much out of place being on a plated dual sport since all I witnessed were mainly 2 strokes. (It's amazing how many senses those machines can touch! I don't think I'll ever forget the smell that lofted around those trails at every corner.) Still, I got the feeling the overall consensus is friendliness and respect for each other on the trails, be it large, small, or 4-wheeled.

I had an incredibly fun time time dealing with the anxieties of having no idea what I was doing or where I was going. I just kept saying to myself..."Head up. Balls of your feet. Elbows out...Head up. Balls of your feet. Elbows out..." Mind you, this was the first time I had ever really felt the slide of the rear tire or the twitch of the front tire in the sand. Reminded me of my very first kiss. It may have looked awkward but I had role-played that intimate scenario so many times in my head, it felt great no matter what it looked like to any possible onlookers!

I tithed to my fellow motorcycle brethren and purchased a year pass. I am very much looking forward to meeting up with others who have a better idea of where to go in the park. I may have started exploring on a particular trail but very quickly found myself just wandering, then, feeling lost wondering if I'd be able to make it back to some place that looked familiar. I guess that added to the fun I was having but that main road on the east side was like a pacifier. Lastly, I stared at the sand pit like a surfer stares into churning waters, tempted by the challenge but respectful of what it could do to my ego and body if I take on something thats just too big for me. That wave will have to wait until next time.

I'll add, the DRjr is an absolutely amazing motorcycle. She pulled out 60 miles of tarmac, played in the dirt, and then another 60 miles back; all in relative comfort and confidence. She was a bit hesitant over the tight stuff but she mixed it up well with the other more capable dirt bikes out there.

I don’t know Croom well enough to be a guide but I’ll welcome you to the area! I’ll keep an eye on any open invitations to get out there and hopefully be able to meet up.

Croom has a yearly/daily pass fee, just FYI. Story goes (for now) it’s had a little trouble recouping from the hurricane but I’m no expert on the matter.

    Enjoy your time here!
