I crossed over from Canada (son was attending a hockey camp) back to US a few years ago. When asked what was my occupation, I answered I was a Fireman.. The male US agent, then gave me crap about not using the proper title and told me the correct term was Firefighter. When I was hired 30 years ago my badge said Fireman. At the time I crossed the boarder I had been a Captain for close to 20 years. He really irrated me, yet I tried to hold my anger and just said well I was hired as Fireman and was currently a Captain.
He let my family and I through, but it shows you how much power they have and how much they can throw it around.

Having crossed the border into Canada [eh!] too many times to run back n forth to Michigan the real pricks have always been on the US side.

They- u/s immigration at the Queenston Lewiston Bridge - hauled me in one night and wanted to know why when coming from Grand Rapids I had crossed at Port Huron/Sarnia rather then Detroit/Ambassador bridge. Well stupid it's shorter to go thru PH-Sarnia and no traffic. She asked me 5 times the same question and got the same answer. Finally the agent whom I had first spoken with came over and pulled the pit bull away from me and sent me on my way.

Now the Canadians typically asked me if I have any firearms with me or even ask me if i own any firearms; but never once gave me a hard time over anything. The firearm ownership question is ambiguous...

As for the car they never failed on the US side to ask me who owned the [rental] car.

Thats wierd eh!, I sometimes make a point of wearing my fire/rescue jacket when i go over as it seems to calm the waters and make things go smoother.
