    I bought this back 2006 1100 miles, when I went to look at it and started it I knew it had blown crank seals.
    Replaced seals and clutch pack from low oil it had broken 1 clutch plate.
    Rode it some around area, not much trying to keep low mileage on it.
    Never real happy with way it ran but ok, it fouled a plug again, (looks rich but lack of riding) chose to tear it down.
    Rings out of spec . is the only thing I found.
    New piston rings and honed within spec.
    I was going to ask your opinion on carb.
    I purchased jets from this site, a 230 main and pilot jet 25 also 35.

    Spec. Calls for a 230 main jet, 25 pilot jet and needle second grove from top.
    Do any of you have one, and what are you running?
    I am at 4000 feet, it came with a 160 main, needle center grove, cannot read size of pilot jet.
    Just thought I would ask before trying stock settings.

    And just to give you a laugh,
    I rode this old girl to the mailbox 8 miles round trip,
    to clear out her jets.
    Thought I leave her idling in neutral while I checked the mail.
    She put herself in gear and took off, took me a minute to chase her down and hit kill switch.

    Have you changed points and condenser and checked the timing? No real reason for the PO to set up carb so it ran less well, so I would change jets back, and check out the ignition.

    ct2 spec is 200 main. ct3 is 230. my ct3 runs nice with a 230. i assume ct2 has either a different carb or different porting/head/exhaust - i dunno. you need to jet for whatever it needs. stock spec may or may not mean anything. although i would assume leaner than stock at 4000', but not much - 1 or 2 sizes max.

    Put the bike together today.
    It appears to have a flat spot at 1/4 throttle,
    Put in the 230 main 25 pilot needle second grove from top.
    That tells me in the needle jet part of circuit, slide is #2 needle and housing unknown.I will not get back to it until Thursday and try clip in center.
    I have new points and condenser will install them and time also,
    and get back at you.

    On carb rebuild it appears PO tried 60 Pilot with 160 jet, mx in that day from what I read.

    In spite of 1/4 throttle hesitation it did have one heck of power band, but need to stay out of there until new rings seat.

    I did buy a used carb to compare stock settings
    it checked out 25 pilot 180 main,
    but the slide and needle I question.
    As slide cutaway was in front instead of rear, needle had 2 clips and spring between clips.
    I bought a CT3 new in the day everything looks identical to me.
    Funny part was I never had to screw with carb in its nine years of life with me.

    My wife is little freaked out
    after I posted
    I went out to drain carb bowl
    and put away bike.
    I called her

    Earlier was crawling around on hands and knees installing carb, fuel lines etc.
    Heard a hiss, brain said snake, eyes and ears dismissed it as air hose.
    Ride it around mumble grumble not what I want yet.
    Come in house, have a beer post results.
    Go back out to shut it down for the day,
    crawl around drain fuel bowl wipe off finger prints etc.
    Look over and see my new friend.

    Well I will blame on myself first,
    I must have screwed something up in the point condenser, timing part.
    Rode a little bit then died, pushed it home (that's a bitch up hill, why do I live on a mountain?).
    Parked it, have not looked into it yet,
    relatives wedding, making money, to buy parts has interfered with checking out what I did wrong.
    Will get back to it soon.
    That is what happens when your child labor grows up and moves out.
    In the old days they would have pushed it home, got me a beer,
    and started to tear it down
    so they could make fun of what dad did wrong.

    but they had fun,

    Well old problem reappears,
    Carb housing, around slide, warped again sticks (until fully warmed up).
    Sticking at full throttle dumping to much fuel and oil, fouls plug as you react,
    and slow it down anyway you can.
    I honed slide body, and freed it up last year.
    I have a another carb,
    guess I will try to get stripped pilot jet out and use that housing.
    I believe this may have been original problem that blew crank seals,
    resulting in it being parked in a garage for 30 years.
    Tell me your stories of removing stuck pilot jets, while it soaks a few days.

    My wire drill set tells me this used carb has a #25 pilot,
    compared to new.
    If I can't get it out guess I will just drill to a #35 and leave in,
    the warped carb did not like # 25 Pilot cold blooded, too lean.
    Might as well order a new needle and housing, this slows me down again.

    Then you always question your sanity,
    when you could just order a 1974 manifold and brand new carb.
    How many people would really know it was not the original flanged carb
    and manifold?

    Managed to remove stuck pilot jet from used carb and rebuild it.
    Slide would not fit this carb and did not want to hone carb this time,
    turn down slide on lathe with wet sanding.
    Started up and it explained to me I need to replace crank seals again,
    it would change how much it smoked, depending on which way I leaned the bike.

    This seal set lasted since 2006, guess I should not complain.

    I thought it was barely ridden? that crankseal shoud have lasted way longer. I just got rid of a 75 DT that was kept in a shed up in the mountains for the last 25 yrs that ran maybe once every 2-3 yrs and it ran fine .

    Got new seals/gaskets, plus lots of excuses,
    Have to clean the bench,
    truck needs repair,
    RL gets clean and wax, lets ride it,
    Oh well not clean anymore.

    I did the right side seal today.
    It appears to be my fault
    as I was expecting to much out of a
    seal I installed 7 years ago,
    that I got in a package that was 30 years old.
    It was hard as a rock and shrunk,
    spun itself out of housing sucking oil.
    Next week I will replace left side
    reset timing and fire up.
    No snakes today just lots of bees, as
    I use bees wax and honey
    to hold gaskets during reassembly,
    easy cleanup for future tear downs.
    Guess they got a whiff.

    Left side seal was ok but installed new one.
    Check timing, fired up, took a while to clear oil
    laying at bottom of crankcase.
    A little hesitant at 1/4 throttle.
    Work on that once I think she is cleared out.

    Raised the needle at 4th notch now, she woke up,
    8 mile round trip test drive to mail box,
    on our 2 track 4x4 road.
    I am happy, think I will plate her.
