Announcing the Adventure Rally, Sierra Edition (Yes, that's really where you'll be riding) I'm excited to be involved with a new event produced by the Bonnier Media Group, which owns Cycle World, Motorcyclist, Dirt Rider and many other great magazines. They are getting the message that Adventure riding is here to stay, and want to do an competition that celebrates it. There has never been an event like this in America. The goal is to create a competition that rewards real adventure riding, which in my mind consists of getting places by whatever the most interesting route is, whether paved or unpaved. To that end, there is a map full of bonus locations spread all over the place, on all kinds of roads, and the competition is to go collect as many as possible. The team that gets the most points wins the Adventure Cup. It will go to people who are great riders and navigators, who know how to get places efficiently. There are bonuses on pavement, but not enough to win, there are bonuses on technical dirt, but not enough to win... the best result will go to those who do some of everything. We will take over the China Peak Ski resort for the event, which is from October 10-13, 2013. Gary Laplante is coming and will organize a skills test on the ski hill, and completing that will be one of the bonuses. The roads in this area are twisty, the trails range from flowing to abusive, and there is history and natural beauty all around, which we've tried to capture with our bonuses (bonii?). There will be magazine editors, round the world riders, and other glitterati in attendance. The choose-your-own-adventure "non-route" approach means you don't spend time in dust, riding over (or under) your head, going places that aren't appealing to you, or wasting time on stops you don't care for. Obviously, there's a price for all this greatness- $600, which includes 3 nights of lodging, 3 meals per day, and everything else you'll need except gas and beer... so we think it's a pretty good deal with all that taken into account. To learn more and register, go here. I'll be there and I can't wait.
