    May 30, 2016 Memorial Day

That might be my only picture of the day.

We were out of camp and had a route picked that would see us on minimal highway. From Monticello we headed north a bit, then west on dirt farm roads towards Egnar, Colorado. Somewhere up in those flats a mountain lion crossed in front of me - about 150 - 100 feet. I slowed down a bit, but didn't see it as it was dense pinion / juniper.
The road eventually drops you down into Slickrock at the intersection of the Dolores River and Highway 141.
From there, 141 north through Disappointment Valley and back onto dirt to connect over to the Norwood - Dolores road.

I think I was at a little under 500 miles. First time camping off the DR. Not too bad.

    Heading North
    [IMG]

It's finally happening. I got a week to travel north.
I had a bit of a rough start with a dead battery the morning of departure.
Headed north on Hwy 550 and had to stop for construction. If you pull over for a few minutes after the construction lets you through you can have the road to yourself.
Hot one today. I stopped for lunch at Don Jilberto's Taco Shop in Delta.
Then through Grand Junction where I saw 104 degrees on a bank thermometer!
New territory on the bike from GJ. Hwy 139 goes over Douglas Pass. I stopped for a few minutes along a FS road near the top of the pass.

You can see Hwy 139 down there.

Just blasting miles today. I stopped for gas and some fruit and water in Vernal, Utah, then north on 191 towards Flaming Gorge.
Got a decent camp spot up among the aspens. Kind of loud with the neighbors running a generator until late in the evening. Perfect weather for day 1.

    View West from camp.

Woke up pretty early and on the road by 8:30ish.

    Camp in the morning.

North along 191 past Flaming Gorge.

    Always like a good bridge.

The road across the dam is interesting. Never seen so many curves on a dam road.

Only along I-80 for a few miles. Geared up in Green River, Wy.
The plan was to hit dirt near La Barge. By the time I was approaching the dirt road I could tell the expected storm was settling into the mountains. The route was supposed to take me north and west towards Jackson, WY.
Stopped for lunch at the Marbleton Moose. Actually a late breakfast as that was all they were serving. I decided to book a room in Driggs, ID for the night. Rained from about Bondurant along Hwy 191 with progressively colder and wetter as I went through Jackson and over Teton Pass into Idaho.
Dinner at the Thai restaurant across the street and a soak in the hot tub was a nice way to end the day. I would rather be camping, but not in the rain.

From Driggs I was hoping to go north to Grassy Lake Road and into the national parks that way. It had rained all night and there was snow up top. There was a bit of snow (and rain) along Teton Pass. I geared up in Jackson as I was unsure if I would be camping or not.
I stopped a couple times while going through the parks. First to add some layers. July and I should have brought my heated vest.
I found some good 'gaps' between the cars and had a nice, though very cold, ride through the parks.

Even looks cold. That's about as much of the mountains as I could see today.

I think my hands were shivering at this point.

There was a bit of snow at the top of the pass near the east entrance to the park.

I stopped close to Cody to try to come up with a plan.
I decided to stay in town. Got a room at the Sunrise Motor Inn, which is right next door to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. I spent a couple hours in the museum(s). Quite a lot to see. Natural History, Buffalo Bill's Wild West, Western Art and the Firearms (over 7000 rifles and pistols). Really need a full day here.
Had dinner at the Silver Dollar Bar. Talked to a biker next to me who mentioned that Beartooth Pass was closed due to snow. In July.
Back at the motel and some beer and conversation with other travelers.

    231 Miles.

Woke up and still wasn't sure what my plan was. Checked the WDOT website, which stated that the pass was still closed. Another rider suggested heading east to the Bighorns. After fuelling up I decided to head over Chief Joseph Highway.
    View from Dead Indian Point.

    Sure makes up for yesterday.

I figured I would head to the intersection and see if anyone was coming from Red Lodge.

Sure enough, it had just opened.

Stopped along a FS road on the south side of the pass for a snack.

And up and over the pass.

A little bit of snow and ice.

    And the obligatory selfie.

    Down towards Red Lodge.

    Cool little town.

Had some tacos and geared up.
    South back through Cody.
I was thinking it would be nice to camp at the Hot Springs State Park in Thermopolis, but no camping at the park.
Got a cheap room within walking distance of laundry, bar and dinner.
Watched some baseball at the bar, then off to sleep.

    289 Miles.

I know what you mean about cold weather in July. I rode all around Wy. a couple of years ago in July and never went without my long johns or electric vest. Great report and photos.

Woke up and got out of there as soon as possible. US 20 through the Wind River Canyon was really nice in the morning.
Boysen State Park has camping, but it looked kind of barren.
Continued south on 287 into Rawlins and geared up for camping.
Followed Sage Creek Road up into the Medicine Bow NF.
Long gravel road. Just kept going on and on.

The gravel road eventually comes out on Hwy 70 between Baggs and Encampment. The road into Encampment is fun, two lane mountain twistys.
I stopped for a late lunch at the lodge in Encampment. Then backtracked on 70 to Lost Creek NFCG.
Got there pretty early and went for a hike for an hour or so after setting up camp.

Camp for the night. Lucked out with the firewood. Lotsa bugs.

Out of camp by 8am. Third romp on this section of 70 east of camp. Looks kind of smoky off to the east.
Onto the dirt and heading south. Mostly gravel. Lots of gravel. And big trucks.
I was going to try to get to Cowdry, then head south through Leadville and Buena Vista. I passed the road towards Steamboat Springs and at the next intersection the road was closed due to forest fire. Guess I'm headed through Steamboat. I know a good place to get a burrito...
Routt NF was calm and the road goes on forever.

Stopped for lunch and to gear up for camping for the night.
Hwy 131 South of Steamboat is great rural Colorado riding. Big sweepers, you can keep the speed up.
Took the Colorado River Road shortcut into Dotsero, then a short stint on I-70 into Glenwood Springs. Hot. Heat. Fries your brain.
Stopped in Carbondale for beer/gas. Then up over McClure Pass and south onto Kebler Pass, which is an easy dirt road the heads over to Crested Butte.

    View of the West Elks.

There's a nice NF campground up top, near a lake, but it was full.

Found a spot a couple miles down the road.

Longest day so far. Not necessarily the miles, but I was riding for the better part of 11 hours.

Still had time for a little hike before the sun set.

Got back to camp and went to get some snacks. Hmm. Why am I finding an empty beer can from last night and not my bag of food (beef jerky, oatmeal, COFFEE). Bugger. Looks like I threw out my food instead of the garbage at the last gas stop. Duh. No coffee is going to be rough. Luckily I have some dehydrated meals. And some beer. And the rest of the Tequila. I'm set. Liquid dinner.

    291 Miles.

Broke camp early and headed to Crested Butte for a great breakfast at McGills.

Nothing too exciting the rest of the way home. 50 West through Montrose and back south over 550. What a great road to start and end the trip.

No technical issues, except for burning some oil.

    239 Miles today

2049 Total miles for the trip.

    Out with the old.

    Last ride on the DR650.

Red Mountain Pass Highway 550 off in the distance.

    Up towards Imogene.

Made it to here and had some trouble, so I turned around...

I really liked the DR, but I have too many big bikes and it didn't really hold the appeal of the GS or the Buell.

Getting some miles before the snow.
Left Durango around 8 am and first stop, as always when heading through Delores, is at the Market for some lunch.
Then up on the north side of McPhee Reservoir.
Never get tired of this spot....

High speed dirt for the next 50 miles. Up past Miramonte Reservoir....

    and down to Basin.

Gas up in Naturita, then continuing north to Uravan, where I decided it was time to start heading south.

River Road between Uravan and Bedrock.

    Good spot for lunch.

    Cool camp spot just below....

    and out to Bedrock.

    and Paradox Valley.

Dry as a bone. Scary for this time of year. It was in the 60's yesterday.

Hit 90 west over to La Sall junction, then south through Monticello, Cortez, then home by 3:30.

    Joshua Tree

Sunday the 5th was windy. Downright brutal wind. I'm cheating, though.
An old buddy of mine lives in Chino Valley, AZ with his wife, two kids, two horses, two cats, numerous dogs and the neighbors chickens and turkeys. I trailered my GS for the first day and spent the evening with the whole crew.
Monday the 6th and the wind had died down, but it was cool. I took my time loading the bike and preparing for the ride. I haven't ridden since November and was a bit tentative to log some miles with the fully loaded bike, but I must have overcome that feeling quickly.
89 South through Prescott and up over the mountains to Kirkland Junction. I figured I would head west on 96 as I wasn't sure I would be able to squeeze it in on the return trip. Lonesome highway westward through the saguaro cactus. I came through here a few years ago on the way back from Death Valley and knew that I needed to return for the opposite direction.
Back on route and south on US93 to 71 to US60 and into Aguila for some tacos. I spoke to some dirt riders that clued me in on camping in Alamo Lake, SP but it was early. I have all I need for a night in the wild, so if I didn't make it to Joshua Tree, I could find a spot for the night and not have to worry.
Seems that the long distance bug set in pretty good over the winter months. I plugged on and made it to Joshua Tree by mid afternoon. Found a nice spot in Cottonwood CG and set up for the next two nights.
I spoke to a neighbor about his travels. In the past 3 months he had been from Wisconsin to Washington to Cabo. Fishing and camping out of his little car.
Camp meal and some beer finished the evening.

    Ride around Joshua Tree

Early start as I had too much tent time last night. Cool morning. Still in long johns, down coat and a cap.
I poked around the Cottonwood Springs Visitor's center for a half hour or so, reading up on the vegetation and wildlife.
    Then north through the park.
First stop was at the intersection of the Old Dale Road and Black Eagle Mine Road. Even without the camp gear I can tell the sand will become too much for my comfort level, so I stopped and got a few pictures before heading back the pavement.
