I came out on the northwest side of the park and headed east on 62 to 29 Palms for tacos and fuel before heading back into the park.
Back to camp early and time for a hike.

Back at the camp and I met up with Bob (nomorebills) and Mat from Phoenix. Camp fire and good conversation to finish the evening. Sounds like we have the same thing in mind for tomorrow morning, too.

    146 miles and a 4 mile hike.

I was running a bit behind Matt and Bob, but they were headed to breakfast and the timing would have us meet again at Salvation Mountain.
I crossed under the freeway and took Box Canyon Road down to Mecca. Then onto 111 (or am I supposed to say 'the' 111 now that I am in California?).
Quick stop at one of the State Park stops
    upload_2017-3-12_10-44-41.png

I took a wrong turn and while getting back on track I found Matt and Bob again.
Salvation Mountain was on my bucket list.

Slab City and East Jesus were a sight to behold.
Apparently you can just set up and live out here. There were camps ranging in size from a tent to a small village.
East Jesus was the most impressive and best kept area.

Quite the work of art right there. Yes, that's Barbie dolls glued to the car.
Some other sights included a row of 20 washing machines, an entire yard area devoted to rusting engine parts and numerous artistic junk.

Not much along the south of the Salton Sea. Ocotillo Wells OHV looks like fun. Not with the GS, though.
I got into Borrego Springs early afternoon and stopped for lunch at a taco stand near the main intersection.
I got directions to the dragon sculpture that's also on my bucket list for today. And a recommendation to check out the visitor's center at the state park.
A crusty, old GS rider (81 R80GS) joined me (he was too busy talking for me to get his name) and showed me pictures of the vintage meet that occurred last week. Some friend of his joined us and I got to listen to some good world travel stories.
    The dragon.

I figured I was good for a night in a hotel, so I checked into the Hacienda del Sol before any more exploring.
I went to the Anza Borrego Desert State Park visitor's center and took a stroll through the center, reading about the history of the area and the natural beauty. Well, beauty to me consists of squiggly red lines on my map. I knew I was heading south to Julian tomorrow, so I figured I would take S22 up towards Ranchita and back this afternoon.

I had dinner with Roscoe, an HD rider that was staying in the room next to me.
If there is any town I want to stop back at, this is it.

    206 miles.

I guess I got all the pictures in my head, cause I forgot to take them with my camera. Lots of squiggly red lines today.
South on S3 to 78 west through Julian, Santa Ysabel and down to the outskirts of Ramona. I wasn't sure what to expect with Black Canyon Road up to Mesa Grande. Unfortunately it wasn't the pavement I was seeking. Looked like a great road as I ascended a couple miles into the dirt. I did cross two running arroyos down close to 78 and wasn't up to finding more along the way, so after a short stop I returned to Santa Ysabel.
View from Black Canyon Road towards Ramona.
    upload_2017-3-12_11-30-19.png

Geez, that's the last picture, so I'll try to be brief. Just want to recap the route so I don't forget it!
North on 79 to 76. West side of Lake Henshaw onto S7 and into Palomar Mountain and a lunch break by the side of the road at the NF info station. S6 back to 76. That S6 was about as squiggly as it gets. What a hoot. No time for anything but the road. Easy enough to stay in your own lane, but I can see how if the road were to be congested it would be hard to find the sweet line. Thursday afternoon was clear. I saw some small cat like creature cross in front of me. Short tail, greyish. Maybe a young bobcat.
Back to 79 North through Warner Springs, Aguanga and Anza. I had been on this stretch on the return from a Baja trip a few years ago, but that was a Saturday afternoon. Got the place to myself today.
I decided to go west on 74 up to Idyllwild as it was still pretty early. Not sure if I am camping or hoteling at this point.
Idyllwild is a cool little mountain town. Snow on the peaks. Camping is closed up here. I check out a cost of a room, and in hindsight, probably should have stayed.
But I'm a mileage slave, so onward. 74 to metropolis and heat. Expensive in the city, but I find a cheap room along Indo Blvd and stop for the night.
    283 miles.

    March 10, 2017

Nothing but miles. I10 in the early morning was cooling and it was a pleasant ride ending with the ascent on 89 to Prescott and back to the rig in Chino.

Author's note: Californians and others, feel free to add 'the' before any of the road names.

294 miles on the bike and then I loaded it and drove back to Durango.

    Trip total 1253 miles.

Splurging tonight. The kiddos are busy and so the missus and I took off to Gateway for the night.
Typical first stop - Dolores Market for some lunch to pack with us.
Out through Dove Creek and onto 141.
I wanted to show MOMODIRT the Hanging Flume, so we motored down the dirt along River Road to the camp spot and view of the remains.
There were some kids camping, so we didn't get to go down to the camp site.

    About 230 miles today.

Gateway Canyons is a bit extravagant for this old dirt bag, but I wanted to impress MOMODIRT and I have kind of been wanting to check it out.
Hung out in the spa for a while. Had it to ourselves. Nice massage and a good dinner at the Paradox Grill.

Early rise and on the road as we needed to cover the 180 miles home before noon.

    upload_2017-4-19_18-31-33.png

    Yours truly.
    upload_2017-4-19_18-32-1.png

    Stopped in Naturita for breakfast.
Had a bit of an adventure out near Egnar. Climbing Slickrock hill was a blast. 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 3rd. Got up to the top and went to shift up to 4th and nothing. I glance down and the shift lever is dangling there. Need to remember to use threadlock on this beast. I sent MOMODIRT off to look for hardware while I started cutting a piece of fence wire to try to use to get us home. She found some garbage and an old TV and started removing screws. All too small. I ended up taking a screw off the windshield and stripped the threads, but got it in there well enough to get home.
Back up to speed. And then some.
As we were at a stop at the intersection of 141 and 491 a state trooper turned onto 141. I love it when that happens. Feet down and stopped at zero mph instead of the 1.5 times the speed limit I have been travelling.
    Back home by noon.
    180 miles.

I hauled the 250 down to Utah for an overnight camp trip and ride. I just got the bike back after having Motocafe add a 3.1 gallon tank, higher handlebars, and Ryan replaced the shock spring and added a spring on the fork.
I made it to the camp spot by about 4 and geared up for a ride.

I'm kind of glad I didn't know how rough the descent was. Lots of steps. Steep cliff on either side. Narrow. Steep.

The little 250 did well. So did I.

I followed the ridge south to Snow Flats Road and went up a few miles to the west.

Left home around 7;30 for a ride north over the paved passes.
I haven't been on the GS in a few weeks - commuting on the Buell and a couple rides on the CRF250.
Beautiful morning and a stop for coffee in Silverton. Had a little chat with a local about the ATV's. He's all for it, as a business owner, but as you know, small town politics can be shitty. Hope they are able to find a good solution. Now it sounds like the business owners are for it, but some of them aren't full time residences and loose the ability to vote. Oh well. Nice day for a ride. And the rolling road block is currently parked and having breakfast, so I'm gonna keep riding.

Finally decided to stop at one of my favorite spots on the north side of Red Mountain pass. I can't believe the amount of effort that went into building this stretch of road over 100 years ago. This spot is the most surreal. Just rock.
    upload_2017-6-8_15-48-37.png

And I might not have even bothered with adding to the thread for today's ride if it wasn't for this:
    upload_2017-6-8_15-50-5.png

This is in the valley between Ouray and Ridgway. Near the cemetery. Ten years in Ridgway and I never saw sheep down here. A few times up above Ouray, but not down in the valley like this. Enjoying the sun.

    June 23, 24 2017 San Juan TT

Thanks again to Bill and Angel for hosting the annual San Juan TT. Fun group of riders from all over. Seems like a bunch from Albuquerque.

Bill did a great job on his winter airhead project. What a clean machine.

Dinner and whiskey, not tequila. No one likes tequila.

Rolling roadblock Saturday. I don't ride with a group much, so 23 bikes is quite a lot.

    Invading the Enterprise. Rico.
    upload_2017-8-12_9-9-35.png

After lunch we split into two groups with me leading a small group over Bolam Pass. Adam and Sala(?) were two up on a KTM SE, William on his beautiful GS and rasta dude on the old dirt bike. Hit some snow up top on the Rico side of the pass. Big river crossing. Back to Richard's for wings and beer.

Heading to the BMW MOA Rally in Salt Lake City. No pics on day one. Just miles. 491 North from Monticello there was some heavy rain. I knew it wouldn't last and plugged through anticipating the heat of Moab. Right around 100d F. Keep rolling. I stopped in Wellington to ask about 9 mile canyon, which I noticed as a possible alternate route. It's about 70 miles with a few miles of dirt to US 40. Nice to get out of the traffic. I think I saw about 3 cars in the first 50 miles. There's some wall paintings and archeological sites, but as I'm not sure where I am staying tonight, I decide to keep going with only one stop at a picnic rest area. The last 20 miles or so is through the oil fields. I got to the stop sign at I 40 and it was me and 5 big, white pickups.
The motel in Duchesne is closed. I stopped at the state park, but it was too early to set up camp and it looked like rain was coming.
I turn off 40 and onto a forest service road at Daniel's Summit. Good camp spots here, but I am thinking a bed would be nice tonight knowing that the next three nights are camping.
Made it to Heber City. Oh boy.

Out of the hotel early and south on 189 past Deer Creek Reservoir and onto 92 up through Sundance. This Alpine Loop is a hoot. Second gear for the better part of 30 miles twisting up through the mountains before dropping into the valley.
I stopped up near the top for some snacks and pictures.

    At the rally.
I attended two of the seminars yesterday. One on Portugal and another on Baja. Both were BMW sponsored events and costly. Maybe some year, but for now I have two boys to get through college.
I found Milan who is the Edelweiss rep at the rally and JGrays, a local of SLC and fellow adv'er.
Friday morning ride with JGrays and a group of about 10 other riders. I80 west to the marina of the Great Salt Lake.

36 Through Tooele (too el ee) and breakfast a few miles south of Stockton (what's the name of that lone diner?). After the late breakfast it was a high paced run up 199 over Johnson Pass and back to too el ee.
Middle Canyon above too el ee is a rough dirt road for a few miles ending with a view of the Kennecot Copper Mine.
