Not sure if it will help, but I tweeted a message to Carlton Kirby who responded back that he'll try to work in a mention of their plight on the first days coverage. Top notch guy and hopefully a raised profile may lead to some help or recovery.
So where's the best vid coverage if a guy wanted to get his dirtbike homeys together sometime? Versus? Fuel? Speed? Fox?
Carlton is the man, I don't know him personally but he sounds like a good bloke who thinks like us. He gets the story right and he likes to follow the privateers as much as the big boys.
Do you know if he follows this thread?
That's how I remember it. And, it seemed that it was (initially) reported that way (And, I seem to remember that Robby was pissed.)
However, that context seemed to (almost mysteriously) disappear, and the story became about the wheel bearing...
Speaking of commentators,
As BlueBull said in the "Tales" thread, "PINGING Packmule".
Paging Nate in N.E. (AKA PackMule - http://www.rallyraidio.net/) for the "2012 Dakar Coverage -- Cliff Notes version" thread
Who hasn't posted since the 8th of December. Anyone?
Last years Cliff Notes thread:
Iain Stevenson reports From FB:
Dakar press conference .... Chris in the big league ... Had a little chuckle when the French interviewer introduced Chris in his best English as Chris Bitch — with Chris Birch.
Here is everyone
So, If I'm reading this right, the first competitor goes over the podium at 3:20 in the afternoon in Mar del Plata on the first. There's a 57 km special, and 763 km liason to the first bivouac. Realistically, riders further back, like Neduro, won't even start until 4:30 or so, and have to ride 820km, much of it in the dark. Going to be a long first day.
I thought it was ceremonial start on the 31st (over the start ramp etc) and then first stage on the 1st?
Dakar.com site says
Activities start at 1:30 PM
1st competitor on the podium at 3.20 PM
"The competitors will be getting to the heart of the sporting matter on 1st January, after the starting ceremony at Mar del Plata. Used to journeying through Argentina, the riders, drivers and crews will this time be making a bee-line for the Andes Mountains. Only a few familiar landscapes as well as some first-rate sections, including dunes and canyons, have been selected for the Argentine part of the programme in 2012."
Perhaps you're right; another spot on the Dakar site says podium start on the 31st.
I sure hope the GB guys are able to recover. I know what it takes to get stuff back (I just helped a friend do this last summer). In a well stocked community, it just takes time. I don' t know what it will take in a place like MdP--all the best to them.
after he said it, mighty nice of you Duke, I even ordered one

Hi Geode, I'm 2/3 the way through your book
Remember the mention of Flood and ADVrider.com in last year's commentary ?
Is the start time of 3.20 pm correct? 850 km liaison in the night then start at 5am next morning?
