We are like-minded on this topic. Great post.

If all the great challenges of life are padded to soften the blow, what real lessons would we learn when we fall?

The sadness of the loss is always tough, the feelings of regret and sorrow overcome rational thought and reasoning. In the end, however, to die doing something you enjoy is a great service to yourself. While your family will see it differently perhaps, there are many less desirable ways to perish. Unsafe employment, drug addiction, random assault...

Each January, I'm reminded of the fact that every competitor in this foolish endeavor has lived more in just a few days than I have in a few decades. It's humbling and exciting and scary all at the same time.

While it has changed, perhaps softened a bit, it is still one of the last of the greatest tests of both mental and physical strength that exists on this ever-shrinking globe of which we inhabit.

    Long live the Dakar.

Doubt that a privateer "helping" out KTM's top rider is remebered/benefitted for a lifetime by the corporate.

why am i reminded of a certain Luca Manca from last year ?? :cry

Thats the goal of people who wants to control "others".....laws and regulations dont happened by accident (of any kinde sports or political)....they are put to "use" with some objective(or should i say target because they will do any thing achive that goal/law/regulation),which in the end benefits some "small" group.....

regarding a "danger in life" heres a littel quote
Osho : DANGEROUSLY? To live dangerously means to live. If you don’t live dangerously, you don’t live. Living flowers only in danger. Living never flowers in security; it flowers only in insecurity. If you start getting secure, you become a stagnant pool. Then your energy is no more moving. Then you are afraid, because one never knows how to go into the unknown.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are only two types of people in the world. People who want to live comfortably — they are seeking death. They want a comfortable grave. And people who want to live — they choose to live dangerously, because life thrives only when there is risk. Have you ever gone climbing the mountains? The higher the climb, the fresher you feel, the younger you feel.

All i wish for the dakar is to have a moment of silence at the start where the people who lost their life riding the dakar be remembered.

    cracking 92 outright.
with the almost 2 liters of oil those things hold and a shortened day tomorrow
he could very well slack off and just do the air filter and rest up while the others work around him.
    good one nicolas.:clap

That's one of the things I loved about my old 2001 KTM 520. Remove two (dry, no lubricant) bolts and the rear shock is in your hands!

Just caught up again....you guys are ferocious.

I have to say, weather or not, I would like to see the competition proceed as planned While not at the same level, I have ridden in pouring rain, freezing temps, snow.

To me, Dakar is not just a race. It's an experience, a trial, a series of moments that many of us will never experience first-hand, but will always be close to.

Last night the Mrs said I was talking about sprocket changes in my sleep. Here's to more of that tonight, and a great start for everyone tomorrow.

From some reports it sounds like he's not happy with how this Dakar has been going for him. Perhaps it's the shoulder injury or whatever, but it's possible he feels that even if the damaged engine was to fail him it wouldn't be THAT great a loss.

According to Orlen Team website (orlenteam.pl) Marek offered the engine to Cyril.

You have to realize that Orlen has been pumping millions of euros into motorsports to promote their brand.
Last year PKN Orlen Net Profit was 0.75 billion euro (26 billion euro revenue). Total assets of KTM are valued at 0,5 billion EURO and the company barely made a profit last year http://company.ktm.com/fileadmin/corporate/pdf/investor_relations/reports/en/Bericht_Q1_2012_EN.pdf

I don't think KTM had to promise them anything. Marek did what he thought was the right thing to do, to help a fellow KTM rider (I'm sure he got a blessing from Orlen Team manager :D).

Ned the more you can tell us about the yzf would be awesome.

For example - do they have a custom gearbox ?

It's fascinating to think its equivalent of a crf450r leading the Dakar.

Why didn't they wait for the efi wrf to come along?

And wasn't that a very short "unimportant" stage very early in the rally?

Yes, the second one is excellent! Having fun, down-to-earth, right out of the garage! That's one of the benefits of living in the high desert of Southern California. I used to do the same thing when I lived up in the nearby mountains of Big Bear.
