My experience is that rally bikes eat the first bump really well, the second ok, and after that all bets are off. Rally bikes suck in the whoops!

I believe so Ned. Tomorrow's route looks very similar although ASO said something about more km's in the grey dunes near the end of the stage.

Hmm, only 172 riders shown in the Posis, out of 174. Does this mean our last two guys were disqualified? :(: I think not. Here is why:

Firstly, ASO have not yet published any withdrawals list. No great comfort as this is normally published a day or sometimes even two days in arrears.

However they have published PDF results up in the french section, and these are the results which will go on the notice board in the bivouac.

    Here you go:

    Stage results with penalties
    http://www.dakar.com/dakar/2014/docs/classements/CEM_01.pdf

    Overall results with penalties
    http://www.dakar.com/dakar/2014/docs/classements/CGM_01.pdf

And our boys Gilbert and Frederic are marked as in albeit with late penalties

    :wings :rayof

The shocker of the results is that Michael Metge got slammed with a 41 minute penalty. This would almost certainly have been for speeding somewhere in the liaison or special in a speed-controlled zone. These are clearly marked in the road book. :(:

So he has been knocked all the way down to 114th!!! :eek1 :eek1

Horrific for him no doubt, but it shows us that the field is actually rather fast. I have not checked if he will be reseeded for "safety reasons" but he can certainly ask, and he can also pay a big cash deposit and lodge a protest with the organisation.

So... what it means is that the overall results now look like this:

Well done Grabbo in at 10th, you aussie bastard!!! :pynd :clap :clap :clap

Now I need some clever guys to answer this question: What are the classes in the columns 3-8?

Group is yellow (1 for professional) or white (2 for amateur), the classes are numbered and then split out in the subsequent columns.

Stand to correction here but I think "M" is for Malle Moto, "F" is for Female rider, and "1" is for production class? :ear

What are the other class numbers? :ear

Now what really excites me is that Brett Cummings came 64th but was SECOND in the Malle moto class!!! Absolutely fantastic!! :wings :wings :wings

Below are the results other riders I have been following :

Ned can you remember how many KM you did in these dunes? It had to be about 30km if I recall? :ear

This time it looks like they'll loop north similar to what you guys did and then back south before some dirt tracks to the east take them to the ASS.

    Cyril Despres

“When your alarm clock goes off at 02.40 in the morning you know the Dakar has really started! And in true Dakar tradition that was followed by 404 kilometres of liaison, before we got to the 180 kilometre special. Opening the piste it took me a while to find my pace and then about 50 kilometres from the end, coming out of a canyon, I saw a dust trail behind me and thought to myself, ‘ah yes, Marc is back’ and accelerated a little. In the great scheme of things the finishing position isn’t of much importance, but it is good to know that I’m up to speed and overall it was a good day for myself and my team, on our first Dakar special together.”

    Michael Metge

“To be really honest I was a little bit nervous this morning sitting on the start line waiting to be flagged away. Happily I quickly settled down and not long after that really start to enjoy myself over the fast, twisty tracks. Hats off to ‘The Boss’, he really knows how to set up a motorcycle. I think in general we tend to ride with the suspension too firm, but with Cyril’s settings the bike felt both comfortable and safe. In the end I got past three riders and am pretty happy with how the whole day turned out.”

Don't place any trust in the stage maps ASO provides. They are BS. The liaisons are pretty close, but not the SS.

Check out my Stage 1 overlay of their map with red line, and my CORRECT map with blue line. The red and blue should be the same, but they are not even close. Why? Because ASO doesn't want anyone to use their map to find where the course goes.

The course is supposed to be secret. The dark force is need to map the actual course. Or, use the roadbook and draw the course meter by meter as you match the roadbook to Google Earth imagery. And even that can be a challenge because you first have to find the actual start point (DSS).

Not too sure if Metge is that happy how things worked out now?:eek1 - does that 41 mins still stand - there is conflicting data, although todays start has him at 114 on the overall WPS at + 45.33 so it looks like it does?
