If my simple-minded calculations are correct, depending on the ave speed of the stage, Despres would have to increase his ave speed ove Pain a relatively small amount to claim third.

    In other words:
If Pain has an ave stage speed of 60km/hr then it will take 153 minutes to complete the stage
If Despres has an ave stage speed of 61.6km/hr then it will take 149 minutes to complete the stage.

Then again, I could be completely wrong?

And if the pace is faster, for example if Pain averages 120km/hr, then Despres needs to average 126.6km/hr.

Does that seem doable? Seems like it from my couch...

Picking up 14 minutes is more problematic: Depres needs anywhere from 6km/hr to 27km/hr depending on average stage speed.

Then again, I could be completely wrong?

    Go Mike!!

BTW, Mike is an inmate here and in addition to a pile of CRF's he also owns a 640Adv AND a KLR! The KLR (and his insistence that it's a quality bike) always cracks me up, especially when coming from a guy that has such an impressive race resume.

I've seen on some of the old vids there were talking 200 to 210kph on those big twins. Gaston said 200kph a time or two.

Side note: My Aprilia RXV550 when I put a smaller rear sprocket on it did 125mph/210kph indicated on the GPS, but that was geared too high, just an experiment. Back to lower "trail" OEM gearing the 550 would easily do 110mph/177mph and that was mostly stock with a hot map on it.

Coma's pipe looked like that also a time or two..... I seen vid of him unloading on a two track. Coma and his bike looked like a pin wheel you throw darts at.

Ya know looking at just how pinched that is it could be possible that he burnt a valve or something too in addition to his electrical problems.

    David Casteu via Email

    Friday, January 17, 2014 - Step 12

It is a feat that David succeeded Thursday in the 12th stage El Salvador - La Serena, comprising 349 km Liaison 350 km special . Despite a broken collarbone , the Frenchman was ranked 8th in effect at 11'03 '' winner , Cyril Despres . The rider from Nice retains 10th place overall , 4 h 01'42 '' leader , Marc Coma ( KTM). Stopped for a bite to eat and refuel at a gas station on the route to La Serena, David says :

"This morning I was 20 minutes early on the 11th , the Slovak Jakes (KTM) and I said:" . . I must keep my 10th " I started with the knife between the teeth It there was plenty of navigation , I pushed to make a difference , I had a good pace for the distance and I won my bet , I stuck him 1 minute. Yet I can not move the arm I can not do a very small movement , I try to pay attention but when I exceed this angle , I suffer greatly. I left exhausted because of the special concentration . "

With now 21 minutes ahead of the 11th , David should reach the finish Saturday in the top 10, even if nothing is played: "This is the top and front (another Slovak Svitko ) is ! 9 minutes ... " think he is dreaming before continuing: " But now, back in ten with this injury , it's crazy ! "

This Saturday is the day of great happiness for David who will forget his pain to take full advantage of the last kilometers of the final stage La Serena - Valparaiso ( 378 km link and 157 km of special ) .

It really is crazy what David has done given his injury. I'm so chuffed for him as well because he was unable to finish as well as this since 2009 if im not mistaken. :bow

Phew - the longest catch up of the 2 weeks - thanks Bam Bam and thanks for the ride, it was a hell of a one while it lasted :clap:clap

Even in the HRC camp? - I'm still catching up, but haven't see the usually Spanish biased (their pr guy is Spanish) but the HRC press wagon seems to be driven by BB also - it's gone very silent - probably still struggling to see how they are to spin this :eek1:eek1

Roma v perfect Peter - leaving or not, team order or not, I would have thought the publicity having a 12 times Dakar winner would be greater?

What if peter perfect has a contract that offers him x for winning a y for coming second. Team orders say come second and not first - :deal - mr pp could be looking for x - y non? :rofl:rofl

So, "Mechanical causes crash" possibly a real case of crying wolf then - certainly caught a lot of people out for a lot of time, would be interesting to hear the mechanics (or engineers for HRC) version of that one :lol3:lol3

Your a hero beechum - 1 thread and a few lurks on the other sticky's is more than enough for me :freaky

Easy - Pizzolito was Helders wc, JBB's went up in smoke last week :eek1 Now Javier was probably covering both of them and made a judgement call on the option to take - nothing wrong in that? :1drink:ear

Now, that's only a result of riding flat out for 2 weeks - it just melts :lol3:lol3
