The Russian driver Ayrat Mardeev and his crew are ok, but have indeed suffered a crash. They are unlikely to be able to resume the special.

The scenario was spotted by satellite between the two rival trucks. Gerard De Rooy was pursuing Ayrat Mardeev, only to discover the Russian's Kamaz in trouble after 313 km, possible on its side? He stopped to help set his rival back upright, before resuming the special a short while ago. Of course, these are only

Gotta love the South Americans. Its a collective solution that is not really a solution you want, but their over eagerness to get involved makes you loathe to interrupt them even though more than likely they will screw it up. :thumb

The Dutchman's Man truck was the first to cross the finishing line of the 400-km long special, with a total time of 4:13'26". He started third this morning, but as previously announced, Mardeev has had an accident and De Rooy stopped to help the Russian.

Speed, fuel, caps, struggles and Brett Cummings

The first part of the day yesterday offered a session of speed that Brett Cummings especially appreciated, riding his KTM at around 155 kmph along the tracks around San Luis. However, his fuel cap was much more ill at ease: “I think among all the thrills and spills it must have been blown off,” explains the South African rider. By finishing 43rd on his first Dakar last year, Brett Cummings was aiming for the Top 20 this year. However, withdrawals of sponsors opened another horizon to him, that of the rider without assistance. “It's due to economic constraints but it's also a choice that is in keeping with the origins of the Dakar”. As for the trials and tribulations that make the lesser and greater legends of the Dakar, between San Luis and San Raphael, Cummings had more than his fair share. He had to ride with just one fuel tank due to the sand that was getting into the other and then use the spectators as an improvised assistance team to obtain the petrol required to finish the last 25 kilometres of the stage. “It was tough, because I can only speak English,” he explains, alone, under the scorching sun,as is often the fate of the lone biking ranger. “I must have lost 30 minutes and I was overtaken by the quads that I had passed. Now I'm trying to find a fuel cap. That's the Dakar: it's an endless struggle”.

What's the Indian range rover in the background doing with a water bed on its roof?

Those range rovers are a blight on 4wd, such pathetic unreliable crap. Great marketing though.

Wow, I really hope Pal gets his bike back, and promptly by the ASO, the cost of doing so outside the resource grid of the organizers will probably cost a lot as well...

What a bummer, as if quitting the race wasn't bad enough...:cry

The F5irehose never sleeps... nor does it give a wakeup call, but it can keep you up all night....

First the Bivouac, then the the pre event, finally firehose -we might as well be competitors. Then I was caught up all weekend, and was behind on the pre dakar thread, then forgot to subscribe here... missed the official start.

I got lucky in that the US midwest has been pounded with cold temperatures and so my work (and much of the great lakes areas far as I can tell) has shut down. Not that I couldn't go in to work, but I have to catch up... :D

And this is just the first two days?!?!?!? :huh
My speed reading lessons paid off.

Due to work (and my usual silent lurking self) I'll probably only be able to catch up in the evening from now on, so I'll depend on the hearty steadfast members of the F5irehose :clap

I don't think I could show myself if I tried to take shortcuts. So I feel like a lurker, and the hump on my back on liason is usually water. Give me time penalties, missed waypoints, and I might be late to the Bivouac every night but don't count me out! :lol3

Hogwild, if I ever get a team set up, I will definitely call on you for logistics.

Now I need to pay my entry fees to Mischa and all the mods via T-shirt to keep the hose at full pressure.

I won't swear to this, but I think somewhere I read that CDP and Metge are 'official' team yamaha france, while Pain and Verhoeven are 'supported riders from a second truck. Don't know if it's a real distinction, but it makes it easy to tell them apart... :hmmmmm

The distances for tomorrow, if they keep the stage as is and don't shorten it.
Previous years, WP tracking only started working on stage 3 or 4 and breaks again on the last stage so nothing to worry about.

It sure went from "all the flock is accounted for and in the pen" (stage 1)

to :deal "the vultures are in a holding pattern" (stage 2)

I'm not too surprised at Reeves and Grabbhams' performance. I would think that the curent terrain would be more suited to what they have done in Africa and Australia. It's been said before - the higher up rankings are always helped out by having good support in place.

Oh, and While it's on my mind Grabbo? How about Grabb'em? He's about caught up to them by now hasn't he..? :freaky
