NIIIICE! This makes my heart go boom-diddi-boom!!
Inmate Pyndon's KTM 450 Rally (complete with ADV sticker on the sumpguard ) at the finish of Dakar 2013
Yes, bike looks great Gian.
I too love the older, heavier Dakar bikes.
It's strange that now, although there are lots of different manufacturers in the Dakar, you can't buy a look-alike bike like you could in the '80s. I know that the Super Teneres, Africa Twins, Elefants etc etc were far removed from the actual race bikes but all of the manufacturers at that time were cashing in on the attraction of the Dakar bikes. Now things have gone full circle and no one has a showroom look-alike of a Dakar bike.
990 Adventure surely still qualifies as a Dakar 'lookalike' ?
Looking at Meoni's and other bikes torn down, there is very little difference between the 950/990 and the bikes they rode. You can also buy a KTM450 Rally so I'd have to say KTM pretty much is the only company making the actual bikes available to the public (in the USA). I know a few people raced the 640Adv but I think KTM had an actual Rally Bike that was different or at least based on the 640.
If it weren't so expensive, half the fun would be building our own replicas like some of the guys are doing with the Transalp/African Twin hybrids and KTM Twins Rally kits. African Queens (http://www.africanqueens.de/) makes kits.
Have you seen Pete640's rally tank setup for the 950/990 KTM ?
Yes I did. For me, I ended up getting a really good deal on the Safari 12 gallon tanks and didn't have to mess with the pipes. The upside, less weight on the sub frame, downside, She's a bit chubbier and I had to go way up on the front springs!
oh god, these old Africa Twin's were really something else...!!!
/\ And I am spent.
Hello Twinie, thanks for the "passion" but when you get photos from a website, even
if they are "public", it would be polite to link to them directly and cite the source
(in this case my website http://www.nightwings.org/Marathon/Marathon-home.html )
and not use these photos as if you collected them.
Most of these were donated by the riders themselves or other websites
Great pics Twinie, thanks for posting.
Nice website, Gian. Do you happen to have a larger version of this pic?
Just bumping the coolest thread back up to the top, it's taken me quite a few evenings to get through to the end, drooling over all of these cool pics.
How a Paris-Beijing winning SuperTenere sounds in 2013.
The OWD8 also won the 1992 Paris-Cape Town Rally ('92 Dakar).

The Andrea Balestrieri Yamaha Ténéré 1984
... and the JCO XT 500 Yamaha shown at Padova / Italy this year.
This one is actually a very accurate replica ;-)
Definitely one of my favorites..ever
Did you see HRC's bike for next year! This is from Superbikeplanet.com
This thread is absolutely awesome.
Take this pic from Russia.
Creator of this piece of art wanted to race with his machine on the Dakar rally in the early 90`s, but was stopped by lack of finance (and chaos in the country). Full custom 800cc boxer twin, homemade chassis and fairings. Today this bike is just too old, underpowered and heavy for Paris-Dakar. Rally remained a distant dream for the man.
