There is something about Dams that intrigues me. They may or may not be good for the environment where they are erected, but the engineering that goes into building them and the devastation that takes place when they fail is something to reckon with.

Here is an old dam site in Western Pennsylvania with an interesting history. Interesting find while riding along in the middle of nowhere:

Gotta have the gratuitous bike pic, of course:

the imfamous "fugitive" Dam on US-129 a little south of the Crossroads of Time at Deals Gap, North Carolina side.

Rumor has it that this was the dam harrison ford jumped off of in the movie The Fugitive. Perhaps one of you can finally put that rumor to rest for me?

Redridge Steel Dam; Redridge, MI (one of the last steel dams around)

The original Timber Dam at Redridge. They took the top 10 or 12 feet off it a few years ago because if it let go they were afraid the steel dam would fail, even with the big holes cut in it. If the steel dam was backed up and failed it would take out the road and people would have to take the LONG way to town.

William Jess dam in Oregon. We don't make them this big in Michgian.

I think this is the Medford dam, also in Oregon. I was on my way to a friends wedding and couldn't pass up the chance to look at another dam.

This is the “Barrière” that crosses the River Rance, from Saint Malo to Dinard, Brittany, France. We've crossed it several times on recent trips to France:

There's a bit more information on this “Barrière” at http://members.tripod.com/tai95112/rance.html

Man, I wish I could recall exactly where this was. I do remember being about half way between Coudersport and North of Pittsburgh, in terms of East West location, but damn if I can remember what route it was on! Sorry about that.

Here is another one in Northwestern PA. The whole Northwestern part of PA has some very nice roads to explore when the weather is good.

Kinzua Dam. It is beautiful here. The pics don't do it justice.
