Jack and I didn't ride to the Center for Birds of Prey yesterday, but I ride out there all the time to snap pics of Raptors. By far, these are the animals that fascinate me the most. I can't believe I've only posted one pic in this thread so far, so I'm gonna rectify that right now.

BIG, majestic fellow. Has to be hand fed because he has some sort of spinal injury. He can't bend down to pick up food. Oddly enough, he flies unhindered by the injury.

And to give you an idea of just how big this fellow is, and how big the accompanying talons are as well....

A young redtail here at work:

A Harris' Hawk closing in for the 'kill'

Lanner Falcon...(as seen in an earlier post, minus the really cute handler)

A Saker Falcon making quick work of a day old chick...

Eurasian Eagle Owl...HUGE...and absolutely silent in flight, as are all owls. Frikkin' eerie.

Great Horned Owl...a young one, but his talons were no less impressive.

:eek2They can exert as much force with their talons as an adult Rottweiler can with its jaws :eek2

Very cool thread. Nice pictures of the area. I love the pictures of the birds of prey.

Epic adventures are great but day trips keep us sane until we get to a point in life where we can do long trips.

I got to spend a couple of days in that area years ago. Not nearly enough time.

Love the pix Mike :thumb As usual!

I'll tell you what sucks about the Lowcountry....
I live in Baltimore. That's what sucks. :lol3

I took over 300 images last week, including a really great day with EastCoastRider.... so it's gonna take me a few days to weed out some of the best. Stay tuned right here:deal
    Enjoy
    :D

If you get the impression that I love taking pictures of my bike.... er... you are not mistaken.:lol3

I also like taking pictures of my friends taking pictures. :rofl

EXTRA points if you can identify this snake. It is not injured, it's playing hurt. I have a pretty good idea what it is. :evil
    [IMG]

I also like taking pictures (while riding) of my friends riding.:deal

I'll put up some more water pix next time just for you ECR. I know how you like those.

Found one of those at the plant last fall. We figured it was an eastern water snake but we have a policy of telling everyone except senior management all snakes found at the plant are eastern water snakes. Even the ones that rattle.

donnelly wildlife management area was privately owned until just a few yeas ago...i had the priveledge of hunting there and enjoyed the photos... beautiful, i can almost hear the wind...i believe the snake is indeed a water snake, perhaps a "banded ws"

Mike, I just zoomed in on Francis Marion and DUDE... you gotta get up there. Looks like mile after mile of sand forest service roads with various ponds and tasty looking areas for wildlife.:deal

Yeah, that woods looks enticing. I want to buy a small place in the area, I'm set to look at a spot near that mongo lake just NW of the Francis Marion SF. Moutrie, I think.
If I can find a cool property and manage to pull off buying it, I will be so casper around here, come winter!:clap

Francis Marion National Forest has MILES of well-graded, usually gravel Forest Service Roads. You can ride 20 or 30 miles on some sections without crossing pavement. It's a great place to spend a day exploring. Even the paved roads in the area are decent- nice scenery and some curvy sections, although nothing like real twisties.

The Wambaugh off-road trail is supposedly very gnarly and suitable for serious off-road bikes only.
