Be sure to hit 16 from Marion to Tazewell then hang a right on 61 and stay on it to Narrows. That's one of the most beautiful rides in VA. From there you can take 100 south to Staffordsville then Left on 730 which will take you to 460 back to Christiansburg. There are many great loops to ride in that area. Former Roanoker here.
Here's a good loop description in the area, including most of what fullmonte suggested: Little Creek Loop. VA 16 and 61 are excellent, but don't miss Little Creek Road. Wish I could get out and ride with ya'll.
Damn Dave, don't you ever have to work? (green with envy)
I traced your route on my trusty, low-tech DeLorme atlas; looks fun.
Great ride, report, and pics! Thanks for sharing. You may not have known it, but you and your Strom were in Strom! When you rolled down 615, shortly after you passed Roaring Run, you came to a stop sign and turned right. Store at the stop sign and creek (Craig Creek) in front of you. That's downtown metropolitan Strom, Virginia. Not a sign to be seen, but if you find a local and ask, there you are. It's on the Gazzetteer too.
Rt 606 over Caldwell Mt is always fun.
I have a 100-mile quick loop based on some of those roads. It's described here: Newcastle Rich Patch Loop.
Hope you get back down this way again sometime.
Thanks for another report, glad you're riding. More roads to add to my agenda.
678 is one of my favorites.
I'd sooooo love to pick up and go a day or two with you when you take these great trips... Hopefully next year.
My buddy and I have been busy setting up the company and getting work. We now have more work than we can staff, which is great. Now we are busy finding employees, then we'll be busy growing our infrastructure to support them and the company (read: administrative help and heaven forbid, an office). Hopefully I'll have free time in 07 to ride at will, like you.
You are to be envied. Enjoy your time. Time is precious.
Know the Mill at Breckenridge well. Working in Fincastle affords me many chances to explore that area weekly.
You missed the some good roads.
Come back and we can do 606 and some others.
Sorry I missed ya, I got to work ya know.
