Wrapping this up before getting WARPED :beer

DAY 4: Goler, Mengel, and Butte Valley (saturday 4/3)

Woke up early sunday morning and set about breaking camp and loading up. Plan for today was to stage at Ballarat, ride to Striped Butte and back, then head for home afterwards. Skipped breakfast, said some goodbyes, and was soon on my way.

Yep, looking like another beautiful day :nod
    [IMG]

One quick stop for a last DVNP photo op :norton
    [IMG]

Arrived Ballarat with a little time to spare (...which was good because Mike had scored a front pinch flat on Colby's DR while riding down from PSR.) Today's group would include Pvt Joker (Mike), VillageIdiot (Colby), TDsurf (Tom), and DVJim (Jim). Also joining us would be my dad and his neighbor Bret (non-inmates), driving up just for the day ride.

Lined up and ready to rock :super
    [IMG]

Off we go, heading south down Panamint Valley.

Pulled over at this spot to record another milestone ...

    :clap
    [IMG]

Rode sweep with dad for several miles :ricky :ricky
    [IMG]

Mike making the turn towards Goler.

Tom was unnecessarily nervous about the infamous 'steps' :eekers
    [IMG]

'Unnecessary' because the steps basically aren't there anymore. Totally filled in and easy. Everyone rode right up and over them without even knowing it.

There was, however, a good amount of water running down the canyon, which was really nice to see :thumb

I had stopped to take some pics when an unfamiliar 640A roosted thru the group :ricky
    [IMG]

Turned out to be PNWcrazymike (Mike) out for a solo ride. He ended up joining us for awhile and was a pleasure to have along.

Dad and Bret add more colors to the already colorful canyon.

    Left turn at Neuman Cabin.

Mike following Jim around a new obstacle just before the park boundary.

Colby suffered a gravity attack on the slippery slope.

Turned off to go visit Barker Ranch, but there really isn't much to see here anymore.

    :wave :clap

DAY 4: Goler, Mengel, and Butte Valley (Continued...)

Just around the bend we found an adventure van stuck in the rock garden.

Looked like a stout rig, but the rear pumpkin was high-centered and he didn't have lockers. We spent a good hour wrestling with the hi-lift jack and stacking rocks to no avail. He ended up backing down and clearing the road so we could be on our way.

    Crazymike went first.

Tom's long legs are almost like cheating.

I tried to take some vids, but they all came out crappy. Stupid camera :baldy

Ths side of Mengel pretty much always looks like this.

Colby and Jim between the boulders.

    Mike and Tom comparing notes.

First time to Butte Valley for several in our group.

    Bret soaking it in.

We skipped Russell and Stella's camps, went straight to Geologists Cabin.

Was very clean and tidy inside :thumb
    [IMG]

A local kept an eye on us to make sure we left it that way :mulie

After the break was time for CrazyMike to head back to camp. Nice to meet you Mike :wave
    [IMG]

... but the rest of us had mor to see before heading back :deal
    [IMG]

Methinks I am being followed :evil
    [IMG]

How do I keep ending up in front? :dunno
    [IMG]

A few key turns and we end up at Emmett's Camp.

The old tree has seen better days. Used to provide plenty of shade :(
    [IMG]

    Nope, not 'that' bus :nah
    [IMG]

After enjoying the quiet solitude for a bit, it was time to start heading back. Since this would be the last real break of the day and we were just backtracking the same route, I told the guys to pick their own pace and I would take the sweep position.

    Got yer back Tom :thumb

Cheater legs aren't foolproof. Tom had one tipover in the rocks, but I was slow with the cam and didn't catch it.

    Bret on the lone red.

Got yer back too Dad :thumb
    [IMG]

    Tom railing the turns :ricky
    [IMG]

OK, maybe this is the last DVNP photo op :deal
    [IMG]

Stopping to take pics let me ride down the canyon relatively dust free.

Everyone was keeping a really good pace and when I reached the valley floor there was no one around.

Eventually caught up with dad and Bret near Briggs Mine.

We all made it back to Ballarat safe and sound :clap
    [IMG]

Spent a few minutes kickin' back on the porch with Rocky before going our seperate ways. Jim set off back to PSR, while the rest of us loaded up and hit the road.

Thanks for the great ride guys :thumb

That's all folks. Time to head home :pynd

airborndad would lead and Thrashed did the sweeping and assisted with the cat herding for this ride
A small problem was discovered close to the top of Towne Pass when one of the riders realized they forgot to refill their gas tank even though their dad handed them the gas can and told him to fill the gas tank and the MSR bottles, well he filled the MSR bottles but got sidetracked and forgot to fill the big gas holder with the shiney chrome cap that sits right between him and the handle bars
Not a bad place to learn a lesson though, some of the best lessons to learn are the ones you will never forget
I came up with a quick plan to keep the ride on track
I told him to ride ahead towards Stovepipe and fill up and I would get the group to the roadside bathrooms just past the Emigrant pass turnoff and have them stop and wait there then I would be behind him incase he had any issues
I made sure he had money and he took off
I then let the rest of the group know what was going on
When we all got to the waiting place
I had another plan I told Thrashed to lead the group to Augueberry since he had been there before and that we would catch up to the group at Augueberry
I caught up to the unnamed rider just as he was leaving the gas station, I had an extra gallon and a half so after some quick mathamacations I figured I was good to make the whole trip and decided not to top off
I also figured he had probably beat himself up for the last ?15? miles thinking the whole group was twiddling their thumbs waiting for us so I told my favorite riding partner that Scott took over and it's no big deal we will catch up to them somewhere on the way to the point
I think he will always remember to fill his tank from now on
I think a lot of us have forgotten something or another important at least once maybe twice thankfully this only resulted in a ?30? mile side trip and no hiking
So while we were trying to catch back up to the group we MAY have been twisting the right hand grippy thingy further than normal so just as we got to the Skidoo turnoff we caught up to a motorcycle - great, cool, slow down, relax - hmm wait a minute this one is not with our group - damn , oh well, hey here's Augueberry Point turn off and a group of motorcycles with a couple just coming to a stop right at the beginning of the dirt
We did it pulled up and shut off the bikes and the lone biker we passed pulls up too and GotMojo joins our group on a really nice looking Honda CB500X

OK enough details here's the evidence
PhillyBurns, nicomama, Pukawai and GotMojo were able to sneak by me before I was able to get my phone out, unlock it by typing in the password, then turn the camera on and aim

So Sopascat was the first picture I was able to get

Hope someone else got pictures cause I didn't lol

Oh wait I got 1 of this drum
My youngest son is named Mason but I don't think he had anything to do with the contents of this drum.
    image.jpeg
Back on the pavement and as always a quick head count
    image.jpeg
And WTF I'm 1 short hmm it's only a 1/2 mile away how do you lose someone in a half mile Thrashed goes back to retrieve him turns out another group stole him they were waving him back up the canyon with their group not realizing he wasn't with their group
    :patch
While we were waiting ? I think it was Phillip ? Hands nicomama her license plate and half of the mounting bracket it was mounted on
Must have been close to breaking off and the vibrations from the washboarded road did it in OR she went just a little bit too far and dragged it on the ground doing wheelies
    image.jpeg
Missing rider wrangled up and back with the group after roughly 10 minutes not a big deal in actuality cause he got back around the same time we sorted out the license plate issue

Never been to Skidoo so I had no idea what I would be dragging the noobs through or to
Got to what looked like the end of the road and my heart sank there was nothing but a sign and a picture of what the town used to look like
    And not much else ugh
We spotted a mine on the hillside and went to scout it out damn Bars across the entrance
I told the group to hang out there and I would scout out the area real quick and see what was there
Quickest way was to get to a high point and look around
I took Thrashed and PhillyBurns with me and we got to do some badass high speed rough mountain climbing

Here's the view we got after taking turns roosting each other up the hill
    image.jpeg
That's our group waiting patiently in the middle image.jpeg
Bingo we have spotted a LARGE wooden structure image.jpeg
Time to get back to the other riders and let them know what we spotted just a little bit further down the road they were waiting on
Didn't see the gate from the top of the hill but a short hike of 600' past it gave us this view

Factoid: historian at a working stamp mill (like Skidoo) in the Western Sierra Nevada foothills, run by a historical society, said the stamp mills in that region ran 24/7 364 days a year, stopping only on Christmas Day. The silence was deafening... local residents who lived with the constant noise throughout the year, day & night, said they didn't like it when the mills stopped. Maybe your neighborhood ain't so bad.

From what we saw from the top of the hill you could spend most of the day in that area exploring multiple sites although the tunnels we saw had steel bars at the entrances
