I've been asked to kick this into play now, rather than later, so here we go... :clap

If you are looking for an(other) excuse for a tough adventure ride in WA why not be part of the 3rd Desert Raid. The destination is Desert Queen Baths situated in the Rudall River NP, east Pilbara WA. Coords 22°27'48.89"S 122°15'40.27"E.

Get this in your ride calendar now! We'll gather there on Wednesday 21 August 2013.

    Why this day/date?
    1. It's a long way from anywhere so picking a weekend day is probably unnecessary.
    2. 21 Aug is a full moon. The moonlight will help those of us who seem to end up riding at night :D. And will suit those who love to howl occasionally
    3. Typically, its the driest month of the year in that area.

Permits? I'm quite sure none are needed but please check for yourself.

Don't miss out on the fun. 16 gnarly adventure riders managed to make it to Desert Raid 2011 (Neale Junction) and another 30 or so gave it a good crack but didn't get there.

Just like Neale Jcn there's no 'soft' way to get to Desert Queen Baths (DQB). Will there be sand? ...yep! :deal

    About Desert Queen Baths (DQB)
    Part of a gorge system
    Permanent water holes there
Gorge climbing for those so inclined
    Very remote
Few travellers venture to this area
Exploroz has a good summary & pics - here

    Pic courtesy Exploroz
    DQB.jpg

Fuel - do your own logistics :deal and be self sufficient because I'm sure no-one will be doing any fuel drops. Here is my early plan (distances are approx):
    Refuel at Newman
Refuel at Cotton Creek 370km (aka Parnngurr - ph 08-9176 9009... aboriginal community... reported to have Opal fuel avail from mid-2011)
then DQB, Carawine Gorge*, Skull Springs Rd**
    Refuel at Nullagine 615km

*Carawine Gorge - another permanent water hole in scenic gorge country. Deep water and approx 1km long & 300m across. This 'could' be a meeting point for those not wishing to tackle the Rudall River NP. I recommend the DQB riders lob here on their way home.

**Skull Springs Rd is one of the best bike rides in the Pilbara (and there are a few). Ruggedly scenic. 140kms of good continually undulating and winding stony track. Expect to encounter a couple of moderate water crossings - should be no trouble on a bike, wet boots maybe.

This ride could be an excuse (partic for you eastern staters) to take some time to explore the many scenic parts of the often by-passed Pilbara.

For the legal hawks out there, NOBODY is 'organising' this ride :deal. Four of us are definitely going and I'm just telling you guys about our plans in case others would like to meet us there.

This will be a gem of a ride to a remote location.
The princess is planning her ball gown already.
Given her performance on the Neale Junction trip she will be in fine form.
    See you there!

A few thought the name of the place was gunna invoke some sort of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert scenario. I said, so long as no-one pulls on budgie smugglers for a swim, it doesn't matter who shows up.

So Neil... leave the budgies home. I got a hunch you got a top drawer full of them. :lol3:lol3

Oh... you should ride into DQB, up on the pegs, with your silver silk cape flowing... a pic of that would make front page of advrider for sure. :rofl I bet you've got it in your calendar now. :D

    Gday fellas

The plan sounds like a good one.

I'm heading through desert queens next week on the 990. Bit of a stretch on fuel for sure so got my fingers crossed :-)

Had a great ride up to Telfer last month through the Pilbara and went through Carawine Gorge, it's a great spot (see pics) I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Take a chainsaw as the only fire wood is huge buried logs and I scrounged THE last burnable stuff :)

Does anyone know if you can ride along the rabbit proof fence?

    Cheers

    Matt

Good choice, as you know Shane, myself, Dren and Oly did Rudall River last year?(or the year before),Shane pulled out in Newman after hitting a tree:huhnot many trees up there but Shane found one, Rudall river is remote, poorly sign posted, a long way from anywhere but thats why we go,Jigalong Mission - you need permits to fuel up.
    Can't wait.....

    Subscribed as ordered.

This is up my way too, and everytime I see adventure riders in TP I suggest they go along the skull springs road. top notch little area. I was in the very early stages of planning a CSR ride next winter, now I think I might go across to The Finke again in 2012, Rudall River in 2013.

I actually went riding with Pilbara (first time I've met him) on the weekend - a bit of exploring around Witennoom - fantastic fun. He had a nasty fall down a rocky ledge. Probably fell about 4 feet and his 450 landed on top of him. It was too serious for me to take a photo, but luckily the blokes behind me had a more practical view of the incident and apparently did get some photos of the recovery. He was unhurt (so he said).

I didn't pay enough attention to the exact route, but there is a nasty patch of real bulldust along the roy hill road, first I'd ever seen. About 100metres long and a foot deep - nasty for 1200's, funny to watch for me!
