How funny, seen this photo lot's before, but just picked up the extra hand on the tank marking the score card, with the rear tire starting to roost.

This was the first post in this thread and I spent a lot of time studying it, have to admit I didn't notice the extra hand either until you pointed it out.
Not just the bike, but the clothing, stances, and facial hair all take me back to a time. Great photo.

With the numbers and speedos, it has to be guys riding the Greenhorn Enduro. Great shot!

Another Steve McQueen pic. Probably in the southwest somewhere looking at the terrain?

Would have been the San Gabriel Mtns. The Greenhorn started in Pasadena (it was a Pasadena MC event) and crossed over the San Gabriels to the high desert and often up over to the Greenhorn Mtns. in Kern County where the event got it's name.

Nice write up from the Ekins site: http://www.budanddaveekins.com/greenhorn-enduro/

    How about a Greenhorn vid??!!:

Geez- I think they were an 'X-treme' brand T. I can picture it in my mind's eye. Ye know- there's some on this site that are kinda handy with digital editing... :-) If ye found the image ye wanted to use, a design might show up. There are a few places on the internet that offer inexpensive custom one-offs, I believe.

That shot is in the last part of Kern Canyon in Kern County/ I would say 1963 or so. I have drove that part of the Canyon 1,000 times and know that exact spot about 10 miles south of Lake Isabella. Just a side note to that spot there is a .You tube of The Doors with Jim Morrison swiming in the river not more than 1/4 mile from that spot as organist in the group Ray Manzarek family moved to Woolford Hights in the early 60's and they were always going there.

Correct on both counts. However, 'Desert Sled' was a general (slang) term for any big bike, usually of the British ilk, even if it might be a Matchless G.
But the iconic sled was indeed a British twin.
There where other Japanese pigs out there like Honda 305 Scramblers that might be described as 'sleds' to some.

Husqvarnas, Bultacos, Greeves, and generally any 2 stroke desert bike was generally called just that, a 2-stroke, and other nicknames like Ring Ding (common to Jap bikes), or just Husky, 'Taco, etc..

Ducati revived the Desert Sled term recently as a marketing campaign to draw in the new bearded set. The BS continues...

Beautiful example, this might be described back in the day as a 'Street Scrambler' which has now become a twisted aassholian term for any chopped up piece of crap found on Craigslist...
    Sorry, I 'vented'...
