Testing my rotors for warpage (I'm getting a nasty brake pulse/grabbing when rolling up to a stop sign), I purchased the Clamp-On Dial Indicator from Harbor Freight Tools. I normally don't buy "precision tools" from H-F, but this particular item seems to get pretty good reviews. Anyhow, am I reading this correctly at .0055"?

The rotor service limit spec on my bike is 0.3mm, or .012". Looks like I am OK here, right?

Looks like .055 so you're out of spec.

    :huh

If anything, that reading would be .1055" because of the additional .100" showing on the smaller dial-- but it ALL depends where the OP set "0" by how much probe engagement there was initially, and where the dial bezel was rotated. In any case, a deflection of .055" or .1055" would render the brakes useless, not just create a slight vibration :lol3

OP, if you are seeing the needle swing between the 0 and the position it's at now, yes you are correct that it's .0055" or five and a half "thou."

I don't think he started with the center dial on O. If it was out .1055 he would'nt need a dial indicater to see the run out. Oh and that's 1.055 by the way.

I zeroed the dial at the lowest point, I really did not pay much attention to the smaller dial. Just finished the RH rotor, it was at .013, that would be out of spec if I'm doing this correctly, and would def explain the pulsation.

May as well do new pads too. Stay away from EBC pads. Real hard on rotors. I like Galfer.

If he zero'd it at 0 and each gap || is .001" I'd say .0055" is right. Ten revolutions for 1" of measurement.

Or one revolution is 1"? One inch of travel? Or one revolution is .1"?

    Then fuck if I know.

Well, I just put a new set of pads on about 2,000 miles ago, Galfer Kevlars. I also have a new set of SBS StreetExcell pads. Visually, I could not see any warpage, but obviously it's there. I really don't notice it except for slow-rolling up to a stop sign, then it grabs and let goes every couple of feet. Hard stopping or at speed is not affected. Guess I'll start shopping for rotors...:(:

Yes - all dial movement was between the 0 an the 6 tick mark.

I'd try removing the pads and rotors. Re scuffing them if the discs don't have warpage. Possibly contamination of one or both?

    Each 10/20/30 is .01/.02/.03
    Each | | is.001 .002 .003
Each full rotation of the dial ticks the little dial .1/.2/.3
    10 full rotations is 1"

so... dunno what the small read but the big dial is showing .0055 (roughly) or .1055 if the small was at 0

ya, the .1 is just the cushion caused during the setup. since all the movement was between the 0 and the .006 marks you have about 5 and 1/2 thou runout

Yeah, the LH side is OK - unfortunately the RH side is .013", which is .001" over spec. It grabs like crazy when rolling up to a stop sign. I've bled, and re-bled, cleaned the rotors, bobbins and pads, lol.

This is a very hard thing to do via a picture... When I indicate something I make a "map" via a sharpie on the part... Pick a datum, put the indicator in the middle of its range and take 4 opposing readings.

This would be so much better as a 45 second YouTube video.
