Differences Between the GTS 250ie and the GTS 300 Super

    I know the 300 has a bit more torque but what else?

    I have been looking at a Vespa 300 Super but Vespa doesn't have a yellow one. Boo. Vespa made a yellow 250ie a few years back and there's a used one for sale in my area. Yellow looks pretty awesome and I wish Vespa would bring it back for the 300 Super. 2014?...

    So... Anyways, 250ie or 300 Super?

    They both max out at approximately the same top speed, the 300 just pulls a better hole-shot....more torque (We're talking 244 cc vs.278 cc) That torque comes at the price of lower fuel economy, based on what Ive heard.

    My GTS 250 has hauled my lardass on some long trips, up and over 8000 ft, and some long days on the slab (Kingman AZ to Temecula Ca in one shot save for fuel/pee stops) i've ridden it to and through Death Valley in 120+ degrees, as well as winter temps in the So-Cal mountains.

    There have been some legendary trips taken on GTS250ie, and its a very durable powerplant....for that reason I wouldnt consider it a "lesser" scooter or engine than the GTS300ie. My friend had 61k on his when he met a deer near his home and totaled it. He replaced it with another...not a 300, not even a BV350. He rides two-up routinely, and rode 33 days cross-country and back on it (Wa to Fl and back)
    He's loading up in June (2-up) and heading out for 22 days on the road on it.

    In my estimation and from what I've gleaned from my many hours on MV the differences in performance is quite negligible. If you've found a GTS250 you like, I wouldnt pass on it in lieu of a 300. You should be delighted with either of them.

    same frame, same engine (tho bored out 35cc). Some of the styling bits are different (digital vs analog gauges etc) but more similar than different for the most part. The GT was a Leader engine vs the current Quasar which was a bigger difference but even with that, I've not felt the need to upgrade. Go by condition, not model as that's apt to be a much bigger factor for you.

    I actually heard it was stroked, not bored to achieve the add'l (minimal) displacement and the torque output seems to have grown as well.

    From owners that I know and have spoken with, the 300 has better MPG
    figures then the 250, and it actually makes sense when you think about
    it - it's basically the same engine which revs about 1k less for the same
    power output and has more torque everywhere.

    At WOT - yeah, it might consume more, but at anything BUT WOT, it
    should consume less fuel then the 250.

    Many GTS300 owners on Modern Vespa report city mileage as low as 51 mpg, and high 50's to very low 60's in highway use on their 300's. Siginifcantly lower than the GTS250 delivers both city and highway.

    They also find the bulk of increased of power (torque) in the low-end...Torque takes power, power takes fuel. The GTS 300 makes more torque....using more fuel.

    Also, I cant find info confirming the 300 revs at 1000 rpm fewer than the 250....that would be nearly a 20% reduction in RPM for just 34cc of additional displacement...or quite an engineering feat from essentially the same powerplant.

    More torque from fewer RPM, AND better mileage all from the same engine design?

    To the OP...my suggestion is to visit or join Modern Vespa.com and see what people who really own both the 300 and 250 models have to say if you are really that interested.

    BTW- I have a GTS-250ie, and a BV-350 with it's new, efficient and powerful engine (clean-sheet design) and the BV-350 gets low to mid 60mpg while my GTS250 yields high 60 to low 70's mpg both in mixed riding.

    The 1k rev difference was from the top of my head from the day the
    quasar 278cc was introduced and that was a long time ago so I could
    be wrong, there was a PDF at the WW piaggio site.

    A lot of Vespa owners saying opposite to what I said - I'd go with the Vespa
    guys, they own the contraptions, they know better, I've had a few tanks in
    different 250 and 300 piaggio powered scoots (there's like 20 of them) and
    usually the same MPG figures.

    The 250 feels sportier/rev happy, the 300 less so.
    Just a subjective thing.

    I would NOT pass up on a good opportunity just because one bike was a
    250 and the other the 300, those two engines can NOT be more close in
    feel & power, but I'd pick the 300 every time.

    p.s. Maybe the peak torque was at 1k revs less?

    Thanks for starting this thread. I've been looking for a GTS 250 and now im leaning toward the 300. I also like the analog gauges on the 300 and the black wheels. Anyone know the differenced between these two regarding maintenance service? Are they single or dual plugs and the same on both. Are the valve assemblies and adjustments the same?

    I too am looking closely at the 300. If it came in yellow, I am pretty sure that would be a done deal for me.

    As far as maintenance for the 300, it's not too bad: 600 mile service: oil, filter and some other things checked, check the oil level at 3,000 miles (add oil if necessary) then replace oil and filter at 6,000 miles. Belt should last close to 10,000 miles but a lot of people seem to replace it early - there's got to be a reason for that. My guess would be that the maintenance on the 250 is similar.

    Maintenance is the same on the GTS whether it is the 250 or 300. Personally, I'm more than happy with my 250 GTS. I get 62-70 mpg with it. The only non-stock change I've made it to put Dr. Pulley sliders instead of rollers in at the last belt and roller change. I top out at 84-85mph (gps, 92 indicated) and acceleration is smooth as butter. That was the biggist difference with the Dr. Pulleys over stock rollers, acceleration improved and smoothed out the slight stutter at low speed fast acceleration.

    To me the differences are more between the various GTS version gauges than performance. I don't mind the digital gauge on my GTS but wish it were green or orange instead of red which would be easier for me to read at night. Seems to me your real choice is whether the gauges and rims on the 300 are worth repainting a new 300 vs getting the 250 in the color you want or living with what is available. Only you can decide where your priorities lie. When I bought my GTS it wasn't my preferred color but it had been used at a show where it picked up a few scratches. Those scratches saved me $2,000 out the door including upgraded front shock and windshield. I've had the scoot for 5 years and its at the shop getting custom painted now along with a couple of dents from a recent accident removed. So now I'll the perfect (custom) color.

    As you talk speeds above I'll ask this tire question:

    I just put a pair of new tires on a vintage MC project, a 1971 Honda CL 100 , tires are Michelin Gazzelle's and they were the choice I liked best in proper sizes-the speed rating is 93 mph. That's a low rating for a MC tire but also not reachable by that machine.It'll probably do 55mph . Whats the speed rating on the tires in 12/13" for a Vespa-a much faster machine than my little Honda?

    Scooter West sells Piaggio Yourban 13" wheels. I had started a thread about swapping the 12" for 13". That would be a cool mod to do. I think the GTS would be an even better scooter with 13" wheels.
    I know it's only the start of the riding season so we're gonna have the 2013 for a while but anyone knows what colors might be available for 2014? I so want a yellow one...

    If you are particular about tires, or enjoy trying different kinds of tires, the universe of 13" tires from which to choose from is much smaller than that of 12" tires.

    That, and at those smallish scooter sizes, tires are a relatively frequent fact of life.

    A quick survey says that many are H,P,S rated, so fast enough for the machines.
