dirt friendly tire selection

    I'm used to pure offroad, and run desert non DOT knobbies. I can destroy a rear tire in 2 decent multi-day trips. I'm doing more adv style rides and want to consider a more DS type tire, with adequate dirt manners. (KTM rfs)

    Orange Crush is mostly LC8 guys.

    RFS are in the Thumpers section.

    On the 950/990, ADV tires of choice are most likely Heidenau K60, Mefo Explorer or D908RR

    Pirelli MT43 Trials tire. DOT approved and very durable. Very little compermise over a knobbie. Only rear tire I ever run on my 450EXC. I have a second set of wheels with knobbies that NEVER get used.

    On my DR350 the MT21's were Magic. (Pacific NW terrain)

    But the DR did not ever see the freeway...

    Tire is for a Thumper: Moved to Thumpers

    I personally have had the best luck with Dunlop D606's.

    Good grip on street and dirt, able to take long stretches of high speed asphalt, load rating is more than enough for a thumper loaded with camping gear, last longer than most dual sport oriented tires.

    Perelli MT43 w/ tubliss. Run it as low as 10psi, superb traction, very little deflection from rocks. Last years so I'm told.

    Love them. Currently on my 08 KLR. scrape the pegs on the asphalt on the way to go rooster some mud & gravel.

    If you're just doing weekend rides then lots of choices could work. I love my Trials rear tire on my WR250F, but I fear high speed pavement sections would toast it with the HP of your RFS KTM. In slow, Steep, rocky, technical riding, Trials tires rock ... and wear incredibly well too! (TWO SEASONS!)

    If you were doing truly long rides, packed up with gear and including lots of high speed pavement in the run, I'd go with Crashmaster's "Mullet" combo idea: Knobby of choice up front with a hard wearing 50/50 on the rear. (Mefo, Heidenau).

    Really depends of terrain, load, pace and length of your ride.

    I had Shinko SR241 trials tires front and rear on my last bike and loved them. The grip on the street is super bike impressive and they do great off road too.

    For a rear tire, I like the Mefo super explorer (way better than the regular explorer IMHO). They are very similar to the Hiedenau K60's which are also a good choice. The super explorers seem to wear longer for me than the K60's. Word on the street is some sizes of K60's wear longer than others. Also the K60 tread pattern varies according to the tire size. For the front, I like TKC 80 or D606: TKC lasts longer, but not as aggressive. Good luck with your search.

    Maxxis IT desert tires last longer and get better traction everywhere.

    I have never done more than 20 miles at a time on pavement with a maxxis tire. I have been told that the 606 will last longer on pavement.

    +1 on the Mefo

    Had them on my KLR and put over 14,000 km (9000 miles?) on my rear including lots of gravel a 7000k (4500 miles?) slab trip to Yellowstone.

    The front has 20,000k (12000 miles) on it. Just going to replace it this year. Went over to the Heidenau but thinking that may have been a mistake. The Mefo was a few bucks more but it was a great tire.

    PS for those in the snow belt the Mefo is also a pretty good snow tire. Drove through snow up to the foot pegs (with an ice base ) with no problem

    i gotta set of Desert IT's on mine, the first tires i bought for my dirtified SMR... wearing pretty good for dual sport, though i'm gonna change out the front for the EN, cause' the front sux in fla. sand....

    i like the knob style on the rear maxxis IT's, works pretty good in fla. sand.... you ever try the SI tire for dual sport?... supposed to be harder compound, wonder if they work/last better on asphalt?.... though my Desert IT is lasting pretty good....
