Dirtskins or other fork cover?
What do you think?
I always wonder what happens if some gritty dirt somehow gets under a forkskin, seems like it would rub up and down on the chrome leg as the fork goes up and down.
I use MSR Fork Skins on the CRF's and my XRL with CRF forks. Keeps dirt from the seals. About $20.00.
I used a set on my old F650GS Dakar. Had them custom made to cover the full length of the slider. No dirt got in and I never blew a fork seal for the 3 years I had them on. Attached with velcro and zip ties. Never came off, never had a problem. Worked great.
I like the type that velcro on so they are easy to clean. Here's an example, but there are others that work just as well:
I use zip ties to help secure them to the outer fork tube. Its importatnt to remove them and clean them after every muddy ride. Our mud is so gritty that almost every mud ride would ruin a set of fork seals. After starting to use the seal savers, I haven't had to replace fork seals in several years. Since I clean them after every mud ride, they haven't scratched the fork tubes. I've heard of others that have experienced scratched fork tubes from not ever cleaning them.
Cool on the fork covers.
