DirtyADV going fuel injected??? - 990R

    Have enjoyed the 950 a whole lot.

    But there have been some engine issues, worn engine cases by the cylinder base "Pyndon Syndrome" and shifting is acting up every now and then finding false neutral between gears.

    There are now some -11 990 for sale at a decent price so thinking about upgrading.

    Most of the upgrades should transfer to a new bike without issues.

    Sadly the -11 R only comes with a 245 suspension travel (have a Pyndon monster 320 so would transfer that) but wanted to sell and think a 245 will have a lot less interest then a 265 (have a used 245 for sale already and no interest what so ever)


    Will have to haggle the price some more but is there any point going for an R? They have stock 990 -11 also.

    ABS? Easy to remove? ...or keep and se if it goes crazy from a 320 suspension?

    Any other difference, know it was discussed a while back if there was different engine parts in the normal vs the R but did not pay much attention since I was happy back then with a carbed 950.

    Please help out what do I do?

    A replacement engine might be the way to go but dont want to ruin a season when mine breaks down searching an engine and wrenching.

    Just don't wait for a breakdown. Find a good 990 engine now, swap it out when you have a free weekend. Keep your carbs, take the timing wheel from your 950, and sell the rest for parts.



    Edit: OK, I spent a lot more than a weekend changing mine, but only because I got the bike back from the shop in a basket, and had to figure out where everything went. :D

    Find a good 09-up 990 Adv R or Dakar. Put on a single exhaust, TuneECU map it with PowerTripp's map for single exhaust, G2 slow turn throttle and you won't be missing carbs.

    I've had the tall suspension on an 05-950, now have standard suspension on 990 Adv with ABS. I don't miss the tall suspension at all. The ABS adds weight, but is non-intrusive for most riding and can be easily turned off.

    I, too, have the bug for the fuel injection now. I had a 2006 950 Adventure S Not long ago. I went for that over a 990 because of price, and I wanted a carbureted bike. Fuel injection on a dirt bike? No way, I said.
    But that 950 had it's issues, and nowadays the 990s have fixed a lot of those problems, and the fuel injection system is established enough that I would feel comfortable with a 990 over a 950 now. I'm happy to say my next bike (well, the wife might get a bike first...:lol3) will be a 990 Adventure, probably 2010 or newer. :deal It will have a place right next to my 03 640 Adventure and my Chevy S10 pickup. Well... the pickup might have to go. :evil

    Was tempted to do a fly and ride but have decided to not put it in traffic this season and save on insurance and bring it home all shiny and replace all plastic and some other parts with scuffed up parts.

    Also want to transfer the goodies from the 950 this winter.

    Thinking about resale value, but guess this will be as hard as my 950 to sell once Im done with it.

    Would not give much for the old bike and have a hard time selling stuff with issues and not inform the buyer so guess the old bike will stay with me, my dad might buy into it as part owner but will see how it goes.

    Will probably part out some of the bike, parts that I will replace, suspension, wheels ...plastic etc if anyone is interested, ads will follow later.

    Well bedtime now, early start tomorrow!

    Was a part of the purchase but dealer could not get them in time to install them before I picked up the bike so they were sent to me later.

    Nice that they sent along a T-shirt =)

    Baffles quickly removed, question is if to add the rubber plug? Or could it be that the carbon tips will hold water? And dirt can accumulate? Leave them out so things can fall out?

    the hole is made so that you can tighten the bolt on the insert. So you could put the plastic thingie in :clap

    Tighten? Loosen you mean to get rid of the thing =)

    But that leaves a small hole was just worried things might get into the carbon fiber cone, but will put the rubber back in place and try to remember to remove it in a while when servicing to see if anything has found its way in there.

    Started looking into the new bike last night, new and old before starting:

    Found one aluminum spacer was missing when removing the tanks:

    But was a loose one complete with spacer and rubber loose when picking up the bike:

    The second hand swing arm I plan to fit is missing some plugs, found one rattling around inside it but cant hear the other one but might find another way to plug it back up and will also drill drain holes.

    There are some things, aesthetic things, that I don´t like in 2011 ADV. I prefer the orange and the old display, But I do like the new fuse box, It seems safer than the previous.

    I hope you end your mods quickly and start riding that beautiful beast.

    There is no hurry fixing the bike, winter is around the corner and wont start using it until next spring.

    Also trying to fix the engine failure on the XR400 (mainly my dad that has been using it).

    Some silicone to plug the holes in the swing arm:

    One was missing a gasket could not find it so wonder if it was missing from factory or if I lost it at some point, took one from the stock sinker:

    Only two cables going to the fuel pump?

    But on pump side there are three?

    Tempted to change to some other type of connector that is easier to remove then the OEM style that is kind of hard to get apart? Anyone changed to a different style?

    Have some of these Deutch connectors that are a lot easier to get apart.
