I've had a lot of bikes over the last 40 years, big Brit twins, a triple, several Guzzis, a 1260 nitrous kitted GSXR, even a Gpz1100 hartailed chop, countless other big Jap fours and a BMW GS.

I bought a Suzuki 1500 the other day, on a bit of a whim, never had a big cruiser. Interesting handling! But then there's a lot of fun to be had hustling unsuitable bikes. I put it on the ferry to Spain and rode it straight to the south of Portugal, steady 80-90mph, dead comfortable, decked the boards a lot, wished it had real brakes (it's the single disc version) but it did 1000k between breakfast and early dinner.

The point of all this? Oh the curled lip of the guy in the queue at the ferry with the GS, the even more curled lip of the guy at the petrol station (GS again), the general contempt of the biking world in fact, contempt from the kind of young guys I've blow into the weeds on other machinery.

What's it all about? Sure the Tinsel Banana (it's yellow....) is a touch garish, but not even a wave when I'm coming the other way at 80+ with the boards folding up?

Like as not, you're now associated with owners of MCs rather than riders of MCs.

You can never totally be at peace with yourself until you develope the opinion that you truly do not give a finger fuck what other people think, say, or do. Fukkem.

Most GS's are around 25k out the door.

They're sneering as much at your lack of stupid spending as at anything else - I get the same thing all the time on my 'strom. That's okay: I'm smarter and prettier than them anyway, so they need the luxury bike to feel good.

I find it funny that I judge others, yet do not care one bit for what others think.

I do not know if others do it, but I tend to size up other riders I come across.

New rider with way too much money?
    Just into 'the look' guy?
Guy out to impress others with the amount of money spent on a bike?
The rolling custom work of art guy?
    The go fast squid?
The guy who rides cross country for weekend fun?
The guy who is using his brother in laws old bike to save gas money?

I do not fit any of those, and do not even look like I belong on a bike.
And my bike is often odd.

Funny, but the only riders I've ever gotten even a whiff of attitude from are the guys on big cruisers like what you just bought. Maybe you're on the receiving end because of the attitude many cruiser riders give off.

I just think you're being too sensitive. How do you know they were disrespecting you because of your bike? Were they really turing up their lips and if so, are you sure they didn't just eat a sour candy? Is it possible you are just being paranoid because you're riding a bike you didn't really respect before buying it?

Relax man. Ride your ride and enjoy it.

You'll find lip curlers on just about every type of bike. Some people just gotta hate. I find it a useful filter for who is or isn't worth striking up a conversation with. Saves me from wasting air and energy on folks that generally aren't worth getting to know in the first place.

I wave at everyone. Guys on bikes, kids on bicycles, people walking, the random mail carrier, cops, and people at intersections that were kind enough to stop before they nearly pulled out in front of me. I give a little wave, while saying to myself, "hello, thank you for not killing me".

I think of it as I am raising awareness at my own puny level.

The only attitude you're going to receive is from insecure cycle posers who use their brand of bike as a means of defining themselves or sending "the right signal". It's a bunch of postuing bullshit. Usually they're the kind of people whose idea of a tool kit is a credit card and a phone number for a towing company. But seriously, it's like the "adult" version of who has the coolest rock band t-shirt. Totally :ymca

I have been riding for 25 years this year, have years off road and a coupled hundred thousand km on road. Europe and America. I have had Hondas, Yamahas, Hodakas, an Aprilia, and once upon a time a wholly unreliable (but metallic gold!) 1972 Bridgestone 125. I currently have an HD in the US and a BMW in Finland. There are some bikes I just don't like too much, either from experience or just because the style doesn't suit me, but basically the only attitude folks are insecure douchebags who typically don't know the first damn thing about motorcycles.

If you run into someone who's going to be a snob because he's riding a fully equipped R1200GS that looked like it was dragged through a Touratech catalog, or a dick who will snub you because you're on a dirty dirt bike and he's a chromosexual, just do your best to piss them off even more.
