i recently did a 900+ mile 87 vs 93 octane MPG compar-o. i averaged 2.9 more mpg with 93 octane.
It probably had less ethonal or something like that. The DL doesn't have a knock sensor and can't advance timing to take advantage of higher grades so the difference wasn't likely due to octane, but some other aspect of the fuel.
i'm running stock 4* advanced timing.
Yes but you are running that with both fuels right? Also, your timing will vary depending on throttle, rpm, temp and a bunch of other stuff as it is controlled by the ECU. A mechanical timing advancer or an offset via a powercomander will shift the whole map (and you can shift different chunks of the map independently with a PC).
Also, this may not be applicable, but some engine builders have experimented extensively with timing adjustments on a TL1000 motor and found that there was no gain to be had with advancing the timing. In fact, they found no power loss even after retarding the timing quite a bit. The TL at least runs a pretty aggressive timing map from the factory (and still runs on 87 just fine).
my bike runs ok on reg. too. just doesnt get as good of mpg. you can find out for yourself by doing your own compar-o. that what i did. your results may surprise you.
Since you don't give your base fuel mileage and price per gallon you can't tell if there is any cost savings - but you could be easily paying 10% per gallon more for 6% mileage gain
youre talking about GPH gals. per hour) that how ya figure cost per mile. that to hard to figure on the road. i just do mpg. can do EZ in my head. but i think i'm breaking even on cost fuel. so, ends up i'm only saving fuel. and possible prolong engine life. nothing wrong with that. try doing your own compar-o. that what i did. you might be surprised at your results.
Did the same with my DL 650 a few years ago and that's exactly how it came out, net gain in km/l and a net loss in $/km.
It's possibly worth using if you are say doing a long run in the middle of the night, just to get the extra range between stops - otherwise no.
Also, switching to Iridium plugs cut the difference in mpg.
In other words your just another dope who's bought into the marketing BS that gas with a higher anti-knock index is better because it has the word "premium" in it
you found no net gain overall mileage to cost
Short answer is - use the fuel recommended for your vehicle
I have quite extensively on the TL, monster and XB. Zero difference in mpg. Have also dyno tested the TL and found no difference there either. Your mileage difference isn't due to an octane difference. If your results are accurate, they are down to some other aspect of the fuel, likely ethanol content as I mentioned earlier.
I've also tested irridum and brisk plugs in the TL, no diff there in mpg or power either. They do last longer though.
Careful fuel mapping can make a big difference, that's where gains are to be had. A quality low-resistance x-ring chain gave a slight, but consistent improvement as well.
I don't care abut the fuel cost, its just not a big enough difference to matter to me. I'd run premium if it got me even half a mpg extra just for the added range. i still typically run it in the air cooled motors just for a bit of extra measure of knock protection in case I get the motor really hot in traffic or something.
Don't forget the placebo effect. According to Tom and Ray on Car Talk, many of those snake oil fuel mileage devices with magnets and tornadoes in them *do* actually work, but not because the device does anything. It's because the driver, wanting to closely monitor his fuel mileage, drives more carefully.
I'm not discounting the OP's findings, but It's quite possible you used just 2.9% less throttle.
Being new to the DL1000 I was wondering the same thing about fuel, running more premium fuel in other bikes never made enough difference to cover the added cost of the fuel. I will look at it when I start doing some long distance riding on this machine, otherwise it's not possible to tell as driving conditions make such a huge difference in fuel consumption.
Looks like I'll be doing an Atlanta to Chicago ride next week. I have an aux fuel tank that gives me a total of 11 gallons per fill-up and this will be a good chance for me to see the difference if any with fuel grade... This will be my first 900 mile day on this bike, looking forward to it!
I've tried this on my SV1000S and I've found absolutely no difference at all in the MPG with 87 or 92 octane fuel. As it was already said, these bikes do not have a knock sensor, the ECU is tuned to run with 87 octane, and won't change the timing even if you're running race fuel as it has no means to determine it can do it. Engines with knock sensors can change their timing maps amd go more aggressive with better fuel, although, it's usually tuned mostly to keep the engine from blowing up if the user puts in cheap fuel.
if you are considering doing a fuel mileage comparison, check out Fuelly, it's a website that will let you track mileage and cost per gallon for any vehicle that you own. You can send your data via text message, so you can do it right after you fill up. You can also add any notes that you want as well, such as octane, ethanol content or brand.
The Fuelly site looks interesting, but I'll probably just keep a log on one leg of the trip or the other and see where I'm at. In the near future I'll be checking / adjusting the FI mapping and probably removing the secondary throttle plates and will check for mileage again on a similar ride after that.
you can do that too. you can write your stuff down in a log book during the trip, and then come back later and upload the data in a .CSV file (that you can make with excel or notepad).
Oh well, did over 2000 miles this week and didn't record the first damn thing! Rain and cold on the first leg, didn't feel like dealing with it and then trying to get home today... started with a full tank this morning (just under 11 gal) and only stopped twice for just a tad over 900 miles and had a 1/2 tank left! Good enough fuel mileage for me... I will seriously check it - next time, yeah right!

Ditto on the placebo effect. Being in medical sales I work with studies all of the time. To be fair you would want to make it more double blind and randomized. (Several tanks and you would not know when it was regular and when it was premium.) Only after the results were tabulated would that be revealed.What you have now is too anecdotal.
