    can't use my garmin 550

    1. i can't scroll or zoom on the screen with an accuracy or reliability. is this normal? is there a way to clean it? is the screen trashed and needs to go in for refurb?

    2. after charging at AC outlet the splash screen showing rj garmin plugged into a computer stays on for a very long time. it is hard to know if this is draining battery and i have tried to power it down either the power button but this does not work.

    3. anyone got a tutorial for getting gpx to the unit? i am now putting them on an 4 gb SD card with an SD reader in my mac laptop and using "Garmin" and "GPX" for file structure to put the files in. the card is not mounted i the desktop when it is in the garmin. then i put the SD in the unit.

should this work?! i can't find them on the unit and had been using a 8gb card.

    1) I have the same issue some times, you can try a screen calibration (press the power button and power on the gps and don't let the button until the calibration screen appears (about 20 seconds or so)
    2) I don't use the ac charger so sorry but no idea.
    3) I think in the past I could also add gpx file in the garmin folder of the SD card and then the zumo could recognise them as routes but nowadays I just open the gpx with mapsource, connect the zumo and use the upload feature of mapsource. Works great everytime.

    thanks a lot.

i will check out mapsource. i'm on a mac but hopefully i can get it to work.

so, you charge the zumo on the bike with a charging cord of some kind? the only one i found had a "naked" end which i guess you hooked up a cigarette male or SAE or even USB to i guess.

also, thanks for the tip on calibration. any thoughts on my needing to press about 25 - 30 times for each dot? i keep thinking i need to press harder and then i start to wonder if the screen is busted somehow. super aggravating.

    THANK YOU

As I recall (it's been a while) there is no Mac version of MapSource.

Mapsource is not availabe on Mac but there is Basecamp that's the new software from Garmin. Works fine too..

If you need to press 25-30 times each dot seems that something's not right with your digitizer. If you are familiar with repairs you could open the gps and check the connections or you could also replace the digitizer, you can get one from ebay for about $10-20.

As for charging I'm using the following cable that is connected to the motorcycles electrical system and gives power to the the motorcycle cradle that comes with the bike

ok. thanks for all the good advice.

i think the digitizer must be messed up. i tried the recalibration and it is different but still bad.

also thanks for the image. i see nwo that it connects to the battery. for some dumb reason i though i was swing bare wires and thought i had to fabricate my own connection.

looks like i for another project when i get home and the garmin won't be coming with me on my trip...
