dunno about the loud pipes saving lives.
I always thought it was Common sense saves lives!!
Common sense is, unfortunately, NOT COMMON.
As a professional you should know better, advocating LPSL for safety is like a doctor recommending treating cancer yourself with herbs.
Not quite the same. Better analogy would be a doctor recommending herbs for the potential, but, unscientific, chance of reducing the development of cancer.
As a professional I know what has worked for me, but may not work for you which has been shown that we agree to disagree in reference to loud pipes vs skill and fate.
My opinion is that anything and everything helps. I am not a advocate for straight pipes or noise pollution that gets everyone's attention as they/it passes bye.
The two Brothers M5 exhaust on my DL1000 is the middle of the road. Not stock, not straight but gives just the right amount of sound in my opinion to add to what you have mentioned " A false sense of Security " but it works for me.
And the Two Bros on the DL1000 sounds GREAT!!!
I don't think anybody is arguing that they have no effect at all, but that it is so limited that pipes loud enough to have real world effect will do more harm than good for everybody. The fact that the vast majority of riders do fine without them should be proof enough.
It would be better if folks with obnoxiously loud pipes would just admit that they don't care about others. Making lame excuses is pathetic.

While placebos may have some effect in unusual circumstances for the person taking them, LPSL is forcing everybody around you to take your pill for you. If you have an illness, take your own medicine.

Very civil discussion going on there, actually. Would have expected more posters defending their straight through pipes, truth be told.
Tbh, i thought stock harleys are loud enough.
Considering that most on those forums have louder than stock pipes, would have expected otherwise?
Could it be that they each have anecdotal evidence where they felt the "noise" their bikes made helped (at least once because that is all it takes) to avoid a mishap?
If so, they have a right to their belief and I would put more emphasis on their opinion as oppposed to someone who claims loud pipes provide no safety benefit and yet haven't ever run loud pipes themselves.
How could someone that never used loud pipes provide an opinion with any validity if they never personally tested the hypothesis?

You quoted me... So I will say that I have many thousands of miles on feet forward bikes with loud pipes. In my experience it has extremely little effect on safety while having a HUGE effect on the public in a very negative way.
Personally I like the sound. I know the general public does not and it gives ALL riders a bad rap.
I do NOT run Loud Pipes on my bikes now and have not for many years.
Could it also be that they've been sold on the advertising that noise is good?
Certain mfgs tirelessly promote the unique 'sound' of their products. Also the myth persists that the product is somehow limited in performance when running stock, EPA legal, exhausts. I know for certain that the bike I currently ride has no performance limitations with the stock exhaust fitted. It seems to me that the LPSL arguement is just one more excuse that riders use to justify to themselves that the offensive noise that they are making is for a reason other than pure vanity.
Not speaking to you in particular, just quoting your comment about what the polls show on the cruiser forums and to point out, right or wrong, those that run loud pipes think they add some level of safely and those that don't think they do nothing but piss people off.

If you think that you would not get a significant performance increase by opening up the engine on your bike (air intake/pipes & exhaust) and adjusting the fuel input you are ignorant of what your bike is capable of.
I was tempted to reply, but was thinking why bother.
Engine is a big air pump. More in and more out, makes more power.
