I got a call one day from scruffy to see if I wanted to join him on a ride. He had this ride on his list and the only question was which direction to ride it. After looking around on line it was clear, we were riding south to north since this direction is more difficult....er...I mean more fun. The riders were berolina, 666, scruffy and myself.

We hit the trail around 8am and saw lots of this:

Nice! :thumb Thanks for posting all the photos!
I think that trail is one of the most scenic you'll find in California.

How long did it take you from end to end? And do you want to do it the other direction now?

10 hours total. 4 hours of actual riding.
We run out of water about half way. Jeepers gave us some.
    No other bikers.
    Bunch of broken down jeeps.
I had to rejet my bike after 10 miles , I set it too lean following JD instructions. Bike was dying midrange. I moved needle one richer and it solved the problem.

I would ride it other way, should be much easier.

I think this is one of the first D.E. reports I've seen doing it on bikes. Thompson hill is a dusy in a well equiped jeep. I think I would be looking to the outside of the jeep trail to try and ride wth a bike. I've done it many times in a jeep.
Good job. Put that right up there with Rubicon Trail.
Have you done the Swamp Lake loop yet? That should be fun on bikes.
I'm in AZ now and rocks is the norm for this area. Great riding.

I took a small Katadyne filter with me and filled up with water at one of the lakes. It was sweeter than the water I'd started with:lol3

Did you guys ride any of the other trails in the area beforehand? Did the altitude bother anyone?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm just excited to share the experience with you :thumb

No riding the area beforehand. I didn't get much sleep the night before, probably too excited, or maybe concerned is a better word. I just paced myself and the altitude was no problem. No complaints other than a few mosquito bites.

We got some water at one of the lakes and used some of the iodine tablets I had, but we should have filled up while we were there.
We got to Shaver Lake on friday afternoon and evening. We took my truck up to near Kaiser Pass and came back and loaded up Berolinas truck with the bikes for the 1 hour drive to courtright res . There was alot of groaning and moaning about our 6:00 am departure on sat morning.
By the time we got to the top of thompson hill I was cooked. Being 60 years old, out of shape, 7 months out of back surgery and the altitude put the hurt on me. I was fighting leg cramps for the rest of the way and was riding in survivor mode. I was slowing everyone down, but I had the truck keys so they took pity on me . I just never seemed to recover, and I'm sure the altitude had alot to do with it.

Yeah, it probably was the altitude. I ride down at Kennedy Meadows a few times a year and I gotta be cool when I get there, not go riding the minute I unload, no alcohol (I know...why do I even go there??) lots of water, try to get as much sleep as possible. Then, and only then, can I ride without my head exploding and getting all nauseous. It's only about 7300' there, so when I did the Dusy the first time I got down there 2 days early an camped at about 8200'. Rode Bald Mt both ways, did Brewer Lake, went out to Mono Hot Springs and hiked around looking for the remote baths and got my jetting sorted. I was ready to rock by the time Dusy Day came :nod I had no issues whatsoever, other than everything taking more effort than it usually does. Key time for our first ride was 7am, as we had no idea how long it would take us. We were fully prepared to spend the night out there if need be, but as it turned out we made it back with plenty of daylight...no small feat considering I took about 350 photos :lol3

Good on ya for still riding the good stuff at 60 :thumb That's my goal, but I don't have that many years to go :rofl

Smart guy, too, for carrying the keys to the truck

Spartan and I used Mojavi bags, 1st time for me. Worked great for getting weight off our backs and I couldn't even tell they were there. Both Berolina and 666 are ordering some for themselves.

Great RR Spartan. You, berolina, 666, scruffy = :bow :thumb :eek1

See now, you say that, and now I have to add it to my list. Even though it's almost certainly beyond my ability level.

:lol3 I don't blame them. The first time I saw the MoJavi my first throught was "That's gotta make the Dusy easier..." GiantLoop makes good stuff. I've got a first generation GiantLoop bag on my KTM 450 and I'm thinking about a Coyote, too.

Great job guys thats pretty impressive running that trail. I've done it a couple times (Bronco/Range Rover) and remember thinking some of the trail would be just excellent on a bike... and some would be hellish. My guess is that when you fell on the rocks they didn't move :smile6

If I remember correctly you were doing some high altitude training at the White Mountain Research Station :loaded ... cause ya talked me into buying an IRC tire for my GF's TE310 :ken

Hope to see ya on the trails.

Thank you for this report! Hope to be running this next weekend if all goes well. The pictures are great - hopefully will have some of my own to put up by the end of the month.

Got a few things to pickup including a couple of fender bags, my last one died out in the desert somewhere. I wish I could afford one of them Mojavi Loops - they look sweet!
