"Don't take your family to Mexico!" they said.
"It's really dangerous right now!" they said.
"They are beheading people!" they said.
"The border towns aren't safe!" they said.
"You can't take our daughter!" my ex-wife said.
" I have never ridden on the freeway!" my girlfriend mentioned.

So I packed up the 990, gassed up the 350 and set off with my daughter and girlfriend for a short trip to Baja.

The roads were terrible. Cars and trucks were driven by angry, armed, drivers who had little regard for the rules of the road. The cops were all corrupt. But then we got out of Los Angeles and things slowed down and got a lot more enjoyable.

We stopped on the USA side of Tecate, changed some money, and then rode into Mexico past the smiling Mexican border officials.

Our plan was to ride from Tecate to Ojos Negros to Mike's Sky Ranch to San Felipe and back in a safe and enjoyable manner. Little did I know, but we would have problems with both bikes, I would suffer an injury, and we would get to witness the once-in-a-lifetime flowering of the very rare Yucca inebriatus.

Look forward to reading the road report -- I'm planning the same trip so this is perfect timing. Nice intro and pictures so far.

So, where was I? (had a little beer break)

Ok, so we camped at a little place called Santa Veronica. We were the only people there. Lovely evening!

The next morning we got going at a leisurely pace and found that Baja was well sign posted.

"See Honey, we didn't need one of those GPS thingies."
Now, soon after this thought, we had our first bike problem. We crossed this nice looking stream and decided to stop for a quick cool-down.

We left the bikes under a large oak tree, walked back to the stream and had a nice swim - boots and all. It had been quite hot!
After the swim, we walked back to the bikes and found to our horror.........

the 990 had fallen over in the thick sand.
So we stood it back up and congratulated ourselves on overcoming the first bike problem.

Then we rode lots of roads that looked like this:

    and

We were well on our way to Mike's Sky Ranch, when we were lucky to see not just one, but a row of the thought-to-be-extinct Yucca inebriatus, also known by it's common name Beer Yucca.

The road to Mike's was fun 2-up and 1-up!
"hey Sweety, when Daddy stands up, you have to stand up too, and don't fidget as we go through the thick sand please."
Luckily I had called ahead and reserved the entire ranch, so we had the place to ourselves.

My daughter said that she would like to swim in every pool in Baja.

My girl is also 10, I told my wife I would like to take her on a overnight ride/camp this summer.... because I'm not sure when female children turn on thier parents. Right about now my 14.5 year old son has turned, he wants to run with his pals/pal-ettes all day and never see me and mom. It makes me sad, he really was my best friend. Dude, enjoy these moments, nothing breaks a fathers heart like his kids deciding that daddy is a big dick.

    Welcome to México.
México is very nice. is truth that the people don´t respect the rules on the road but sometimes is exciting.
    Anyway México is fun.
