Dont Use ...

    Gunk Engine Degreaser anywhere around your brakes.

    Yes, I screwed up and decided to wash the bike yesterday. Before beginning I notice large amounts of chain lube that had been collecting on the rim, spokes, swingarm, etc. Hmmm, I have a can of Gunk so I apply liberally to these areas. I know the rear brake is getting some on it too but hey, this is degreaser and should be OK. Wrong. After rinsing and washing I go for a short ride to dry things off and notice it's not stopping as normal. Speed up, try the fronts by themselves, OK. Repeat using only the rear and hardly nothing, try harder and cant even get the rear to lock and you know how easy that should be to do.

    Remove the pads, soak in brake cleaner, deglaze with 60 grit, touch up the rotor with 180, wipe down with brake cleaner and re-assemble. No better, the Gunk must have saturated the pads.

    I have some Galfer 1054 blacks on the way. I noticed on the KTM fiche the OEM's were twice the price. Are they that much better?

    Well, that was a bomb. Without all the extraneous details, what is the collectives opinion of the choice of brake pads?

    EBC HH sintered, these are as good as the oem but cheaper.
    Or some Galfers black (I've used the green ones as well, good but don't last very long). Haven't tried the Gold on the 990.

    The OEMs seem to last the longest and are excellent.

    Hey ya'll, I'm a noob to this so please forgive me if I've screwed up trying to reply, but I've lurked long enough and feel like sharing some of my limited knowledge.
    A trick to salvaging oil/chemical soaked brake pads: pliers to hang on to them, good ol' propane torch, heat 'em until all "unwanted juices" quits bubbling out, let cool, and brake clean rotors and you're done.

    Thanks, I'll try that since KTM Twins is being a bit slow with my order.

    Any chance that would harden the pads damaging the rotor?

    You might have send grease remover into your rear bearings and the swing arm bearings. Keep an eye on them.

    You may be able to save them by repacking them. Rear besrings are easy to get to.

    If you think about how hot they get under heavy use, I don't think a propane torch will get that hot. I've seen pics of red hot pads on cars, plus I've done this many times with no ill effects.

    Thanks WillyD. It's a cinch getting the pads out (push the caliper back a little, remove two clips, pull the pin, take the pads out) I wish all maintenance were that easy on the beast !!! So, I torched 'em before going to work this morning, one actually caught on fire for a few seconds. I kept the flame on them till they quit smoking. Had a cup of coffee while they cooled, put them back in, rode to work, and voila brakes again. Figured there was nothing to lose and there are new pads on the way. Thanks again.

    Good call Keener, I will check the bearings and re-pack while they are out. I would have thought these were sealed bearings?

    Similar to spray carb cleaner, but brakes down oil and other oily chemicals and leaves no residue(if you use enough). Most auto parts stores sell it.
