Our roads today were US93 to Montana then SR43 to I15 to Helena MT

We stopped to talk to this couple who were touring two-up on a new Kawasaki ZX10R carrying everything in a
backpack and a tank bag. They started in Portland (?) and were going to Houston. We were impressed. And they
were long time riders. Travel light.

Northern parts of SR43 were a bit rough, but ok for us, and little to no other vehicles.

We stopped in Boulder MT for lunch at this nice place.

Arriving at Kevin and Annie's place in mid-afternoon.

Nice day, temps were moderate and we enjoyed the ride.

Wednesday Aug 30 - Helena to West Yellowstone

Morning sunrise in smoke. Kevin took us to breakfast on our way out of town.

Rolling the bikes out of the garage.

Left Helena on I15 but turned off onto SR69 at Boulder to meet up with SR359 to US287 to West Yellowstone.[IMG]

We stopped at a visitor center to read about this nasty landslide that killed several people in 1959 as a result
of an earthquake. This whole hillside fell and dammed a creek creating Quake Lake.

    Done for the day.

Tomorrow we ride around in Yellowstone.

And she's carrying the backpack? She needs to talk to her man about some luggage.

Thursday Aug 31 - Yellowstone to Dubois
We spent most of the day riding around Yellowstone National Park and walking to see interesting
geotechnic stuff. We left the motel around 0800 to 48F temperature. Never got hot all day.

We were surprised at their comfort with being so light, however she talked to Cee quite a while about her ride gear...

Saw buffalo near road but not on road this time, not like in 2000 when they were all around you and I. That was tense.

Friday Sep 1 - Dubois Wy to Granby CO

    US26 to US 287 to I80 to WY130 to CO125 to US40

    another beautiful morning
    [IMG]

We stopped in Lander WY for a coffee refill and a short break. Then to Rawlins for lunch and refuel. Cee's
Moto Guzzi Norge is averaging 50MPG with a high of 55mpg. My BMW R1200GSA is averaging 45mpg with
a high of 54mpg. Both pretty good for running 60 to 70 mph on the highways.

As we got near Colorado the scenery changed and temps dropped a little. Very pleasant.

Made it to Granby Colorado after 360 miles in the saddle. Sort of a long day. Had dinner at a Mexican restaurant
that was really hopping. Evidently a popular place.

Tomorrow to visit friends and our son and his family in Arvada.

Saturday Sep 2 - Granby to Denver

It was 36F as we started loading the bikes, frost on the seats. No surprise given the altitude.

After breakfast in Granby we suited up for what we thought was going to be a cold ride over the pass.

    Wonderful road up Berthoud Pass
    [IMG]

Met several groups of riders. Lots of waving.

Surprise, it was in the 50's here and we were way overdressed. (time for parking lot striptease)

We got off US 40 and onto I70E but didn't stay on it long and started back up into the mountains.

To visit friends Vic and Hannah, they stayed with us in Fairbanks this summer on their epic trip. Nice home in the country.

Hannah showing me their cool collection of bikes.

Then Vic and Hannah took us to great BBQ place in Boulder on a wonderful twisty road. No pics of that, too busy
riding to shoot. Vic and Cee up front. Vic on his brand new R1200GSA, I take some responsibility for this purchase
after Vic rode my '16GSA in Fairbanks in May. I did warn him.

Hannah bringing up the rear on the Duc Monster.

After lunch we rode to our son Marc and his wife Leah's home. Was great to see the grand daughters.
Great day for a ride to see places I've seen before and the changes, places I haven't seen before, good friends and family.

We'll be in Denver for the next three days to spend time with the kids, we'll continue our trek eastward next Tuesday.

    Tuesday Sep 5

We had nice weekend with the kids and grandkids who pitched in to help give the bikes a wash.

We left Denver this morning about 0830 after long good-byes.

Cloudy skies. The first we've had since leaving Fairbanks in August. Thankfully no smoke today. We're headed
north east to Iowa and it doesn't take long for the terrain to change dramatically leaving Denver.

By the time we entered Nebraska the skies had cleared and it was nice ride on US30.

We stopped for the night in Kearney Nebraska.

We'll stay on US30 well into Iowa before turning north on 59. We prefer the quieter roads over the interstates.

Wednesday Sep 6 Nebraska to Paulina, Iowa.

Left Kearney NE to clear skies and temps in the 50's.

    Lots of wind turbines.

Not all flat. Shortly after this, I blow past a road change while enjoying the sights until Cee yells in the comm
that I missed a turn. She led the rest of the way.

Arrived at cousin Bruce and Carol Rohwer's century farm near Paulina. My dad and his dad were born on this farm.
    Yep, Carol drives the bus.

    Unpacking.

We'll be here for a few days visiting family.

This afternoon in Paulina while waiting to refill a prescription for an infection in a right side tooth (started
in Oregon and getting better), a left side crown came out. Good grief. After years of no problems and now two
separate issues. Got an appointment for tomorrow to fix it. Carol knows the dentist and called him at home.

From here we will head to New Hampshire and then south as far as Alabama with lots of stops in between
before starting the westward portion of the journey back to Bend where our truck (and CBX parts) await.

Sep 9 - On Iowa Time

Its been nice weather and a nice time here in Iowa. The dentist made quick work of the loose crown and all is well.
There were a few tasks to complete with my late father's estate and that got done faster than we anticipated.

We went to the Clay County Fair, aka the Spencer Fair, on opening day. It was fun to look at the new
agriculture equipment; tractors, combines, tillers, sprayers, spreaders and more, that I have no idea what they do.
Fortunately, Bruce knows what all this is and explains what I'm looking at and their function.

Bruce has one of these and let me operate it two years ago. That was a blast!

There is sadness here, a fire destroyed an elevator building in Primghar last Friday night, fortunately some of the
    structures are still functional.

Happy Anniversary, the 10th is my wife's birthday... Loving the pics of the trip! I am so jealous, just picked up my '17 1200 Rallye... would love to be traveling the world right now instead of sitting here at work daydreaming!!! I see you only could stand one night of Kevin... LOL Annie is a doll, but next to Griz, Kevin is a character! Getting ready to meet Fighter for lunch, he and Max leave this weekend for their trip to meet up with you all, wish I was attending, it will be a hoot for sure. Stay safe and follow Cee so you don't get lost...

    Great trip kids.
    Thanks for the link.
Keep us posted and we'll see you in BHam.
I trust you received the address for the hotel.

Quick question ..... was the motor you hauled to Bend from one of the Healy bikes?
If you get a chance while in Iowa, check out Baxter Cycle in Marne, Iowa.
    Ride safely!

Have address, rez's made. arriving 1500 10/4/17 from Athens and inspecting Blue Moon (may cause delay in arrival) on the way.

No, motor came from a bike in Eagle River. Healy bike needs are still being inventoried but generally good. We brought two
motors south, the other is a parts motor from a parts bike that had had water in it. Poor storage by PO.

Baxter is now on ride plan for today, thanks for reminder.
