Quite foggy for the first hour.

Eventually the fog dissipated as we rolled down highway US 6.

We left US 6 and got onto SR 66. Quiet road with loads of corners and beautiful scenery.

We arrive at Dave and Diane's home. I knew of Dave through the International CBX Owners Association as he's
one the forum "experts." When Dave heard we were going to be in the area they invited us to stop by. Quite
fortuitous since he had tools to bend my bent up sidecase closer to correct. They then took us out to dinner at
    a fabulous pizza restaurant.
I enjoy meeting new people, and these folks are great people!

The six cylinder Honda CBX has always been a favorite bike.

Dave's gorgeous 1959 BMW R50 that he recently restored. An immaculate work.

And his 1979 Honda CBX in pristine condition despite its over 45,000 miles on the clock, he's the original owner.
I hope my '79 will look this good when its done.

Tomorrow we ride to Maryland to visit a cousin I haven't seen in many years and we hope to stop by the
Flight 93 Memorial Park on the way. (thanks Dave for the Park suggestion and road tips.)

I let the GPS take us on some "shortcuts" through some gnarly back roads in Pennsylvania. Some barely two
lanes wide. Can't get much distance made but it was fun.

We took advantage of the shade to study the map next to this abandoned mall.

Our next stop. It was very sobering to remember those events and the sacrifice many made.

We made it to Dee and Peggy's home in Frostburg MD. We had a nice visit and they took us out to a great restaurant.
We'll spend tomorrow with them too. I think we haven't seen each other since 1966. Lots to catch up on.

Dee took us for a drive in the countryside near Frostburg to see the House of Yoder near Grantsville and an old arched bridge.

We left Dee and Peggy's home at 0830 to nice weather, again, going east on US 40 and turned
south on US 219 which took all the way through Maryland, West Virginia and into Virginia.
Its a lovely road with miles and miles of tight corners. Was hard to take pictures since the
road held our constant attention. Traffic was light before noon. We were tired at the end.

    Interesting town name.

    Quiet US 460.

We stopped in Lebanon, Virginia for the evening. Tomorrow we'll ride 150 miles to Maggie Valley, NC and visit the
    Wheels Through Time Motorcycle museum.

We'd planned to make the short ride in the morning and got underway early enough to arrive
at our destination by noon. We drove by one of my favorite tracks for NASCAR:

We were on several interstates today, this one was near empty but the last one, I40 was quite busy.

Nice to know we're heading the right way.

We checked into a motel early and got ready to visit Wheels Through Time museum.

This is in Maggie Valley NC. We've attempted to go here twice before but their open schedule
didn't match our time in the area. So this time I made an effort to be there when it was open.

This side to side V twin was not used by Indian long but the engine configuration was later used by
Italian Moto Guzzi starting in 1967 and continues to today. Cee rides a 2009 Moto Guzzi Norge.

There 100's of bikes here and many if not most of them in original condition, not restored. I enjoyed seeing the
bikes in this condition perhaps more so than restored.

I liked the several examples of four cylinder machines. Beautifull
    [IMG]

This is for my buddy, Richard, an unrestored side car rig.

Fascinating story about this one of a kind Traub.

We took lots of pictures, here are but a few. Its definitely worth your time to go here.

Tomorrow and Wednesday we will explore the area, many good motorcycle roads including the
Tail of the Dragon which we rode in 2011.

Tuesday Sep 26 2017 - Ride around the Orange Loop

We checked out of the motel not knowing where we would end up. There is a map of the twisty roads in the area
and we took one called the Orange Loop. We went east on 19 then turned north on 209.

Packing up in the morning. There was a misty haze in the area, is that why they're called the Smokey Mountains?
(although my definition of a mountain has no trees on it. these are hills, Smokey Hills? nah.)

The first part of 209 north is nicknamed the Rattler. Saw this vendor selling t-shirts but not open.

Nice road, very little traffic. Had the road mostly to ourselves.

Came into a corner and went across some wet sand/mud and the bike slipped sideways, I yelled Mud in the comm
and looked in the mirror in time to see Cee's bike wash out the front tire but she caught it and on we went.
    Adrenalin mud.

we came upon a flock of turkeys
    [IMG]

    The fun resumes.

Stopped for a break and a cup of coffee.

Saw this poster in the store and it caught my eye; many years ago I did concert sound systems and mixed a
concert for Lou Rawls once. Very nice guy. A buddy and I went out to dinner with him after the concert and talked
about being in the music business. My friend went on to be a professional musician for thirty years. I still do
    sound for my church.

    back on the road
    [IMG]

Cee keeps a good distance behind me, I've been known to stop quick for a turnout causing Cee some angst.

    its a rush
    [IMG]

We went north on 209 turning west onto 25 at Hot Springs taking us to Newport TN where we had lunch.
Then south on 321 to Gatlinburg where we got onto 441 and eventually came to the southern tip of the
Blue Ridge Parkway. Nice road but lots more traffic.

    Blazing up the hills.

    break
    [IMG]

Marvelous views at the lookouts. This section climbed up to 5,000 feet.

Lots of tunnels. I rev'ed up the motor to hear the echo in the tunnels.

Then back to Maggie Valley NC, stayed at a different motel. Had dinner at Guayavitos Mexican Restaurant. Excellent.

Going to spend another day in the area. Flip the coin to see which way we go.

    Wednesday Sep 27 - Sides

Coin toss came up sides. So no ride today. Hung out and talked. I called my home dentist about the tooth thing. He saw the xrays from the Salmon ID dentist and thinks its OK, no surgery needed. that's a relief.

A group of old Brit cars from Montreal came into the motel. A '68 Sunbeam Tiger V8, a TR250 and a TR6. My brother used to have TR6, fun car to drive. More bikes came in and then a Polaris Slingshot, cool machine. So we had a parking lot party.

Tomorrow we roll to Charlotte NC to visit a cousin and do maintenance on the bikes. Both get oil change and a new rear tire for the GS. The GS's front tire and both Guzzi tires will probably go the entire distance. Supposed to be another hot weather day so we'll start and end early.

You guys are road warriors. I figured you would want to day off the bikes one of these days. How many miles have you ridden, and how many do you have left? I'm still enjoying your ride. Hang in there and travel safely.

We'll be here for a couple days visiting the area before we start the westward portion of the journey. Tomorrow

We lost a good friend. Wild Bill Buchanan passed away last night. He was known
to many in the Fairbanks bike community and a valued member of the BMW
Airheads club. An owner of several Airheads, he loved to ride and his infectious
smile always warmed my heart. I wish I had a better picture. Bill will be missed.

Saturday Sep 30 - In Charlotte

Yesterday was a maintenance day. I took the GS to Charlotte BMW-Ducati for a new rear tire and oil change. We're at the 6,500 mile mark for the tires that were fresh at the beginning in Oregon. All are Michelin Pilot Road 4s, the Guzzi has the PR4 GT and the GS has PR4 Trail. The look identical but the Trail rear was wearing faster than the GT. Fronts are near identical in wear according to my tread depth gauge. We've been through several sets of PR4 GTs and get 10,000 miles on them when touring, so Cee's will get her back to Oregon.

    Customer lounge area. wow.

Cee draining the Guzzi's oil. She does most of her bike's (and airplane) maintenance and is currently rebuilding her '95 BMW R100RT's engine.

Today, Doug, cousin Sharon's husband, took me on a jobsite. He's in the landscaping business.
They are just beginning a major overhaul of this yard.

Doug gave me a rake to clean out the flower beds, some lopers to cut brush and a pick to dig out the roots.
