Thats it for pics from the museum. If you like bikes you have to go here someday.

Tonight. We're hanging out at the hotel, had planned to leave tomorrow, Sunday, but hurricane Nate is headed this way and supposed to hit Birmingham tonight and tomorrow. Wind and 6 to 8 inches of rain. Barber cancelled all races and outdoor events for Sunday. Everyone was packing up and leaving the park when we left this afternoon. Hope to leave Monday morning and head northwest to Denver. Bikes are gassed and ready to go. I think we're gonna get wet...

    Sunday Oct 8 2017 - A little weather

Hurricane Nate is blowing through Birmingham today. Rain and wind but not too bad. Weather should allow us to move west in the morning.

Cee's Guzzi was hard to shift past first gear yesterday but she figured out we put the shift lever back on one spline too high and it was hitting the lower fairing. Will be an easy fix; after the rain stops.

If you are interested in more pics of Barber, look at our 2011 Ride report "The Banks Tour Fair to Outer" page 5 post #92.

Hanging with friends, Arley ( who left early this morning), Fight, Max, Roger, Griz and Sherry, watching football and NASCAR.

    cheers

Monday Oct 9 2017 - Birmingham AL to Little Rock AR

A picture of yesterday's rain and wind from the storm. Even though it passed right over Birmingham, it wasn't really all that bad.

We left Birmingham at 0800 this morning to 90+% humidity, 77F temps and low clouds on I20.

Eventually we got onto US82 which was relatively quiet in the morning.

At 10am the clouds parted, temps jumped into the 80's and we put the mirror shields back on. They do help keep
    temps down inside the helmet.

Crossing the Mississippi River near Greenville Mississippi
    [IMG]

    and into Arkansas
    [IMG]

We took a break at the Arkansas Welcome center beside Lake Chikot. Temps were into the low 90's. Too hot, again.
I tried to enjoy the hot knowing this might be the last day of hot weather.

    Was a pretty day.

Not far from Little Rock we ran into rain but it wasn't hard and was short lived.

Stopping for the night in Little Rock.

Cee's Guzzi is not shifting quite right but she has developed a method to get it to shift ok, could be something
inside the transmission that needs attention.

We stopped at a toll booth somewhere and when I tried to restart the BMW the start button refused to come out of the "kill" position. I had to push the bike off to the side and fiddle with it for several minutes to get it to work. I will not put it back into the "kill" position again. Then later in the day the cruise toggle would not resume. Again, I fiddled with it and got it to work but it won't increment speed up or down anymore. Going to call Foothills BMW in Denver tomorrow and get an appointment for Friday and encourage them to order parts now. The bike is only a year and a half old.

On the humorous side, I noticed lots of real small ants crawling on the BMW gas tank in Birmingham. I brushed them off each day. Tonight after stopping in Little Rock I noticed more still hanging around. They've gone for quite a ride. Its supposed to be cold in Denver so I'll leave the bike outside. Maybe that will end the hitchhikers...

Tuesday Oct 10 2017 - Little Rock AR to Blackwell OK

The day started out nice, clear skies and 77F but as we moved north the temperatures steadily dropped into the
60's, then 50's and then with light mist and 51F. We were dressed for warm so eventually stopped to put on
warmer gear. A lot different from the mid 90's of yesterday. I discovered my Gerbing electric jacket liner is not
working, that's a disappointment. Need it now. Was working when I left home.

It was nice to get into a warm restaurant for lunch, usually we appreciate a cool place to stop for lunch. After lunch
we went to the lee side of the restaurant to get out of the cold wind to get geared up. Usually looking for shade.

The view most of the day. We were on turnpikes (toll roads) several times and traffic was lighter.

We did eventually get out from under the clouds and it warmed up to 58F.

Stopped in Blackwell Oklahoma for the evening. We're on the "plains" now. Not much green or trees. Tomorrow into Kansas on our way to Denver, which just had snow...Coincidentally, the first snow to stick on the ground at home in Fairbanks Alaska fell today though I doubt it'll stay long there either.
Got an appointment with Foothills BMW in Denver to replace the Stop/start switch cluster. Cruise control switch was working fine today. No ants to be found. They jumped ship.

The snow is pretty well gone down on the flats and rapidly disappearing up in the hills...It'll all be gone by the end of the week is my bet. You guys should have nice weather here in CO.

Wednesday Oct 11 2017 - Oklahoma to Kansas

I went outside to check the temperature at 8am and it was 41F. We slowed up getting ready and left at 9:30
to 51F. Better. A sunny day makes cool temps easier. Got back on I35 north and rolled into Kansas.

We turned left at Salina onto I70. We had a crosswind running north on I35 and still had a crosswind on I70
going west. How does that work? It got stronger, gusting to 30, making the latter part of the day harder.

Boring view. I was enjoying it despite the arrow straight road.

Passed by a large wind turbine farm
    [IMG]

Stopped in Colby Kansas for the night. Temperature was up to 70F. Hoping the wind is lighter in the morning. Usually is.

Overall nice day despite being on the super-slab all day.

Thursday Oct 12 2017 - Colby KS to Denver Co

Another brisk morning temperature-wise at 45F or so. Clear skies are nice.

We hadn't gone very far when temps jumped into the mid sixties requiring a stop to drop a couple layers. Nice.
The sky was a deep blue.

Trucks, our constant companion on the interstates but not a lot like some super-slabs we've been on.

Long somewhat boring ride across Kansas east to west followed by terror negotiating big town traffic.
We've discovered the best way for dealing with it; get in the left lane and go fast until whatever exit I'm looking for gets near.

Arrival at our son's home. Roll into the garage and relax.

We'll be here for a couple days visiting, get the GS's start/stop switch replaced and I've started the insurance
process for the Guzzi. Hope that isn't a headache.

Rode the GS To Foothills BMW to replace the right side switch cluster. In and out in under an hour. I've been
here before with my K1200GT for a minor fix in 2011. Good dealer and they try hard to help travelers.

Contacted the Guzzi's insurance company. We'll take it to Moto I in Seattle for the repair estimate and meet the insurance adjuster.
Sometimes it doesn't want to shift but Cee is talking to it and getting it to cooperate. Woman and machine.

Helping my son wire up a new shed with outlets and lights this weekend and watching the NASCAR Talledega race today (Sunday.)

Tomorrow we get back on the road for a three day ride to Bend OR.

Day one of the final three day ride to Bend Oregon where the truck has waited since we left it on the 27th of August.

Inexpensive but a little run down. Evidently there is train track very near as we just heard it rumble by and blow the horn.
Hope there aren't too many trains going by tonight.

Worst motel to date. We discovered the heat didn't work and the room was cool during the night. The bed's cover
was thin so it was a cold night sleeping and cold getting up this morning. The door wouldn't latch, one push and
it was open. The lock didn't function. Only a little better than a tent.

This morning it was 34F when we rolled out and temps were in the twenty's on US6 going over Soldier Summit.
Lowest temp was 20F. It was a struggle to stay warm for me. Cee's Gerbing heated jacket was working.

    Going up to Soldier Summit
    [IMG]

We rolled into Spanish Fork (near Provo UT), got gas and found this Starbucks for coffee, a donut and to warm up.
Temps had warmed up to 50.

We (the GPS) found a nice way to miss Salt Lake City as we went north on I15 taking us west and eventually
connecting with I80. We saw this mound of salt at the Morton Salt works.

    The salt flats are huge.

We saw this weird looking "art?"

It appeared part of it had fallen.

    The salt was wet.

    Cool looking crystals

Stopped in Winnemucca NV for the evening. Temps had risen to low 70's. Nice.

Tomorrow we go north into Oregon on US95 and to Bend. Its the last day of our ride.
