dr 650 battery issue

    Sir,

    Please help me with following issue;

    I started my DR for the first time in 3 month. It started, but soon as I push back the quick throttle knob, it coughs and dies.

    Went through this couple of times, and the battery finally quits.

    I got a brand new battery but due to lack of time, I had to pick up the battery when it was only 85% charged. Dude at the counter said go ahead and ride it for couple of miles and it should be ok.

    I replaced the battery and it starts right away, but does the same thing. So kept the quick throttle knob out and rode it around 2k RPM for few miles.

    I thought maybe I should do the valve check, so I begin to do the valve check.

    After the adjustment, I put it all together and starts, and it does the same thing. Quick throttle knob out, it runs around 2k rpm, but soon as I push the knob back, it drops to under 1k and coughs a bit and dies.

    At this moment I check the plugs, and see one of the plug hole is very messy. It's oily around the plug. It seems there were some leaks around spark plug holes.

    So I changed the plug and go through it one more time. I ran it with quick throttle knob out and check the plug. It look like it was never fired. Mind you this was the brand new plug, but it seems it never fired.

    At this time, the brand new battery quits too.

    I jumped bike with the car and it starts right away. I check the plug again, and this time, it seemed it fired. So I thought, O.k.

    But the throttle knob issue is still there. The Knob out, runs. But the knob back in, it drops under 1k and dies.

    Is it the battery? or the rectifier? or something else?

    Anyone with any idea, please help this poor soul.

    nice warm bike riding COTTONWOOD ARIZONA...
    carb clean time.. need to clean the PILOT JET .. its plugged thats why you have to have choke on for it to run.
    put battery on a charger at 2amp for 8hrs (put it on while you sleep) and it should be ok

    Agreed! If you can't maintain idle it is likely a clogged jet. You can try pouring half a can of seafoam into a relatively full gas tank, running it for a quick ride and then letting it sit for 24hrs. But, manually cleaning the carb will be the ultimate fix.

    Dirty carb
    try draining the fuel tank and carb bowl
    put 4 oz seafoam mixed with quart of fuel in tank
    let sit over night
    try to run
    if that dont work take carb apart and clean

    I have had good luck with sea foam in small engines that have sat for a long time....my bikes get ridden :D

    bad gas in the carb. i would start here before delving into electrics.
    maybe a heavy dose a sea foam will work, but you might pull the carb and do a pine sol soak.

    in addition to seafoam on the tank, top off with gas plus do this:

    drain the float bowl (bottom screw).
    pull the fuel hose of the inlet to the carb.
    take out the small filter in the inlet pipe (it's plastic and fits inside the metal pipe)
    put a piece of extra hose on the inlet leading to a small funnel.
    pour seafoam into there until it's full.
    put the filter back in
    put the regular fuel line back on
    let the bike sit over night. this will soak the jets hard w/ seafoam.
    then connect bike via jumper cables to a car battery for extra starting and get the bike running.

    this may work w/o pulling the carb and cleaning it.

    Thank you for all your help.
    I'd like to report back what I did, and what happened thereafter.

    I took out the TM40 and cleaned it.
    I took out the needle and cleaned it.
    I took out a small screw under the needle and cleaned it.
    I bought a bottle of seaform and used the entire bottle.

    In the morning, bike started right away with the chock on, and it stayed on idle chock off. But it wasn't smooth.

    So I decided to take a spin, and after about 4 miles, it died on me.
    The battery was totally gone. Mind you this was a brand new battery.
    A good Samarian helped me and I was able to start the bike right away with his jump.
    After the start, I ran about 100 miles. I turned the bike off, and crossed my finger, and it started right away.
    I haven't had any issue since.

    So, conclusion.
    I think I had low battery and also the carb issue.

    Again, thank you for all you help. I could not have done it without your wonderful help.
