I was hoping to use a new hub for this, I might need to send the one off my 2013 DR. Still no word on the new hub.
I'm working on a conversion for Thump!. This brought up another thing to look out for as the first hub he sent me had a worn out bearing bore where the bearing had a zero to .0001" interference fit, whereas it originally comes with between .0006" and .0010" of interference.
The second one he sent still had the stock bearing in it, so I had a chance to measure the play via shake test I used on Phreakingeek's two hubs. Thump! says that the hub has somewhere between 100 and 1000 miles on it and the result is .021".
Whatever you think is best will be fine with me.
The worn hub was from one of my 350s. It was "painted" with red clay and had a visible line in the area where the stock bearing fits. I had nine 350s and countless tubs of parts so who knows the history on that???
The second hub is the the one that came on my new bike about a year ago. Shortly after breakin I swapped on another hub with a 45T sprocket so that one has less than 1000 easy miles on it.
I went ahead and measured the play via the shake test on Thump!'s newer hub with a new bearing installed and the result was .015". To recap, that's:
Standard single bearing, new, .015" (.38 mm)
Standard single bearing, 100-1000 miles (161-1609 km), .021" (.53 mm)
With added inner bearing conversion, new, .0035" (.09 mm)
With added inner bearing conversion, 6500 miles (10461 km), .005" (.13 mm)
I think this gives a pretty good idea, but it would still be interesting to measure a stock hub with ~6500 miles on it.

i got 29000 miles out
of oem bearings.then 17000 miles out of a china set. just installed a set of sks bearings. original rubbers.year is 2009..i do grease them about every 8000 miles.
Hi there:- I recently posted the information below over on the main DR650 forum. It may help folks to visualize the added bearing modification, which of course may be carried out in a couple of ways.
I trust that I may also add it here in this section particularly dedicated to the cush-drive?
Concerning the DR 650 cush-drive as discussed in several recent posts, last year when I was pondering how to carry out the modification in line with BergDonk's & others' ideas, I made a cross-sectional 'to scale' sketch of the standard layout as shown below.
Perhaps you can see that there is room for the cush hub (left hand side in yellow) to possibly twist around the 6205 bearing due to the sprocket offset & lack of support on the inner side, IF the cush rubbers are worn, allowing extra movement. Those rubbers sit 'outside' the hub part as shown.
Below is a sketch 'post mod' that shows the new inner 4904 needle roller bearing that I chose to fit directly supporting the hub (in yellow) against the rear axle. Perhaps I should have coloured the roller bearing for clarity. I did put a wider 4205 double-row ball bearing in that hub to replace the standard 6205. I also made & fitted an external retainer for the outer seal. This was in a new hub that I purchased to practice on, in case I buggared-up the original. I did post a few photos at the time on the OZ/Kiwi section:-

Subsequently, I have since modified the original hub generally as above, except that I left the standard 6205 bearing in place:- much simpler to do. So now I have a spare.
I have since done a couple of thousand Klms. on the first iteration with no issues evident.
What brought this on in the first place was a very evident increased roughness in the drive train due to the apparently normal wear/compression of the rubbers after about 13,000 relatively easy Klms. Again, I did post some old/new comparison photos of these last year; see above.
Frankly, I don't know how one could miss the changed 'feel' of the bike due to the worn rubbers; it was awful.

I received my modified hub from @motolab a week or so ago. It's a beautiful piece of work. Installation was non-eventful and now I have about 200 miles on the new hub. This bike was purchased new in Dec, 2016 and now has ~7.5K miles on it. I reinstalled the oem cush rubbers which still fit snuggly.
I have no quantitative data of course but the bike feels smoother to me now. I suppose that is due to less driveline vibration. AAR I like it!
If all goes well I'll roll up another 7-10K this year and somewhere along the way will likely need a new chain and sprockets. At that point I fully expect to continue using the original cush rubbers since the modded hub doesn't depend on them to protect the bearing.
So we have another long term evaluation in play. I'll report back later as I gain more experience.
Final piece came in today, sending it off to Derek Thursday, should be there on Saturday. Looking forward to the finished product. Might have to wait for a ride.
