MeRide gets into it a bit here:

My bad for bringing the bike up...somehow I got confused:confused and thought Mark was done with this bike. Not quite the case yet. Guess this bike got him a little distracted. I can see why. If the images aren't there I'd be happy to host some for you Mark just to give a visual.

He does, however have some very interesting info related to the drag bike in trying to keep it 'period'.

    Keep the drag bikes coming!

I think BW's basic question is what's the object on the right hand side of the pic...

The lathe chuck on the left is easily recognizable. On the right side is a high speed grinder attached to the cross slide (or compound, maybe). Lathes are also used to do precision grinding as well as cutting with bits. Useful for many cases where a more precise tolerance or finish is needed and the work piece doesn't lend itself to simple turning/cutting.

I've looked through these posts and haven't found anything on the man that I associate with Bonneville, Don Vesco. Haven't been able to find a good picture of the Silver Bird but Don broke the 300 mph barrier in 1975 with a twin engin TZ750 Yamaha.

I bought my first streetbike, RD350, from Don Vesco Yamaha in 1972 and used to hang around just to see the racers that would show up.

Not a speed record holder, but I read a story once of a guy that rode a stock version Kreidler Florett from one end of A1A to the other. It took a while.

    Don Vesco :bow

He was evidently still at it in the late 1990's:

Yup. The Turbinator was actually a wheel-driven car. He set his last motorcycle record with twin Kawasaki turbo bike. When I bought my bike, there was a twin Yamaha 350 (TR's ?) streamliner on the showroom floor. At that time Vesco's mechanics were wrenching some of the fastest Yamahas anywhere. I remember the mechanics rolling out TZ350 powered flat trackers and testing them in the parking lot. I would see these that weekend down in South Bay at the races.
