I think motorcycle drag racing is lost on the ADVrider crowd (low thread activity). For those that are interested, Joe Smith is very active over here as are a growing number of the racers and builders from back in the day.....a mere 340 pages of fun and nostalgia :clap : http://forums.dragbike.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=1096

Not too many BMWs used for drag racing. Thanks for the link.

Jokermachine.com Jawa Speedway Bike set up for land speed record.
Rider is former world champ Billy Hamill. it did 144mph 1mph short of the record for there class. pretty amazing for a 500cc single cylinder bike

(the frame i believe is actually a grass track bike frame)

I was at Bowling Green,Ky. in '77 or '78 when I first saw this triple Norton. Late in the evening when the track and air had cooled down he was trying to qualify. It was a two bike run and the triple got out of the hole pretty good. Then the front end started lifting and the guy just stayed in it!
He went by the 1/8 where I was and the front tire was a good three feet high.
I saw him again in 1985 at Bristol.Tn. and got to talk to him. I told him I'd been there at B.G. when he'd done the big wheelie. He got pretty excited and asked if I'd gotten a picture. I said I had'nt ,but the picture was burned into my brain.
He said that was the best the bike had ever run and his best story too.

I remember getting my first bike an RD200 and going back a month later for my RD350. In the showroom of the dealership was a TZ700 that they had converted to 750 but it still was the twin shock. Made me a believer in Yamaha 2 stroke technology. I wish I had a photo of the TZ but never made one.

Cool. If you have more pics I suggest you post them up. I'd like to see them, and hear more.
Unfortunately you're kinda from the pre-photo era. Cheap personal cameras were just beginning to sell towards the end of your era so there isn't a whole lot of saved media from your time.

Race a bit here in West Oz.
Fast Kwaka's are thick on the ground, think our track record for normally aspirated motors in our bracket field (Modified Bike) is still current, 7.9 @ 165.
Built in a bloke's shed, no fairings, Z9-style.
