Dream Project.

    I got this bike a little while back, but just really started working on it. I heard the bike run before I bought it, but I knew that the clutch wasn't disengaging and the transmission might be hurt. After playing with it for a little while I decided that the tranny was indeed completely knackered.

    Just a couple hours of work after deciding to pull everything apart.

    There are already some unpleasant surprises, and I have yet to split the case.
    In addition to the visible rusty spots, 4 links of the centrifuge chain are completely rusted together. Guess it's time to start the parts list...

    It also came with some interesting sludge in the bottom of the side cover.

    Next step is carrying it down to the basement and pulling the bottom off.
    Though I may to find a manual before I do that..

    I once built one of these; there was a very helpful book by a guy named Bill Silver. I let mine go with the bike, but it's worth trying to find one if you can find a used cc. At the time there was a club called the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club which was helpful for parts sourcing. Good luck, you'll get lots of attention from old guys like me.

    Looks like you have a challenge there. Too bad those main bearings are rusted. But from the looks of all the goop on the base gasket, it probably wouldn't hurt to tear it down and get a good look at things.

    Good thing tha front fender is in nice shape. that was usually one of the first things to get buggered.

    They are a nice bike but geared way to low and with that single puny little carb the leave a little to be desired for acceleration. Regardless, I love mine and have had it since 1980.

    I got the rest disassembled, results below.

    The head and cylinders were solidly stuck together, so they stayed together.

    You can't get a crank with that kind of corrosion just anywhere.

    5 gear teeth and a piece of rubber. I don't think all the metal is accounted for yet.

    What year is it? I have 2 Dreams waiting to be turned into 1 so there should be a spare motor or lots of spare internals. Alternatively if you give up on the project I see a few parts I'd like to purchase from yours.

    Unfortunately I wont be getting to mine until late winter/ early spring because my CL needs to be finished off first.

    Very little of the rust was in a place that was crucial to engine operation. even the rusty main bearing is still tight, it just won't last too long like that. The pistons are just damaged on the skirt. The sharp edge is the only real danger, one could probably file the edges a little and run them for thousands more miles. Most newer motors have much shorter skirts anyhow. Otherwise the pistons look to be in great shape, not really any signs of blow-by. However the transmission was not at all functional, which is why I disassembled it in the first place.

    It's a 1964. My preferred option would be a spare motor as well, but I definitely need a main shaft and a first gear.

    Subscribed, hell of a cool project you've got there. I eye Dreams longingly on Craigslist from time to time, really need to get one in the stable.

    BTW the bars look just like what I'm after for my Dream build... are they the ones with the wire slots in them? How bad are they?

    Hmmm... if nobody wants that front drum....

    Anonny, I have the original Dream bars and I believe they are okay shape-wise, but terrible condition surface wise. Rechroming in California expensive! If you are interested in rechroming them, I can dig them out.

    Also, that's a really sweet Superhawk!

    I keep hearing folks say things like this, most everyone seems to have fond memories of them.

    A couple years ago I met a fellow who was riding an old red Dream that he had bought new. The incredible part was that he had put 180,000 miles on it!
