Drive chain tensioning

    Hey guys, so I've had my f8 for a little over a year now, and lurking has provided me with damn near all the info I need to wrench on her. Thanks for that by the way!

    Anyway, the past two long rides I've noticed towards the end, when I'm taking off in 1st gear my drive chain is rattling. It'll only do it for a second then quiets down. I keep the chain within the 35/45mm adjustment range.
    I've checked the adjustment after each ride this has happened on, only to find it within spec.

    Is this typical for this long ass chain? Should I be worried?

    If your front sprocket is hooked, and your chain is loose, it'll slap itself silly at low speed under power in first. Mine did that badly when on tour, I tightened it up and was fine for a full day's ride but then needed adjusting again. Changed all parts when I got home and it stopped.

    Sounds like you're ready for new parts.

    It's got 9,800 on it, I'll pull the front sprocket cover and inspect tomorrow. The rear sprocket has very little wear though. May have to bite the bullet and finally get a breaker!

    Don't know if you're serious but don't use a breaker on a 525 chain. Much easier to grind off 2 heads and pry apart with screwdrivers. My Motion pro breaker/riveter says the same.

    Well I went ahead and wandered out to the shop, front sprocket is toast. Guess I'm getting a sprocket and chain. Should I replace the back sprocket too? It's not really worn, but I know the general rule of thumb is new chain new sprockets.

    9800 miles.... tbat is pretty short life for sprocket.

    You can usually get two rear sprockets to one front. Whatever you''re doing, don't do it. :D

    Supposed to change both sprockets and the chain but I do the chain and rear sprocket if the front looks good. Can't reverse the front like on some bikes.

    Did you get the bike previously abused?

    Well the chain was over tensioned when I picked the bike up at 4k. I just did an adjustment and put it out of mind. After most rides I wipe the crap off the chain with an old rag then give it a light coating of 90w gear oil via toothbrush. I've done this on o-ring chains in the past and gotten 20k easy, but this was on street only bikes too.

    My gut feeling is that over-tensioning kills more chains and sprockets than running them too loose. Also, for O-ring chain, so-called chainlubes attract more chain-and-sprocket-destroying grit than does just keeping the chain clean and corrosion-free with products such as WD-40.

    When I walked toward my 2010 F800GS to pick it up after 600 mile service, noticed the chain resembled a violin string rather than the pleasing gentle catenary curve I expected. IT WAS GROSSLY OVERTIGHT. I was very upset with the technician and service manager. Visions of destroyed wheel bearings, damaged countershaft bearing, chain damage were dancing through my head. Fortunately, looks like there was no road test following the mis-adjustment, and therefore no damage.

    However, this incident did reinforce my commitment to never take my bikes to a dealer for routine maintenance, ever. I made an exception for this 600 mile service, and got burned.

    Might want to check your oil drain plug, too.
    I had no option, to keep my warranty valid (unlike in the USA) but to take my bike to the local a-hole aka Motorrad dealer and every single time they over tensioned the chain.
    And the drain plug.

    Really? Front is 1/3 the size of rear and has 3 times the load. In my 50 years of riding the front has always worn much faster than the rear on all bikes I have owned. I usually find a rear will last for two chains and front sprockets.

    I found a cool (free) chain wear measuring gauge at show I was at a few weeks back: It measure the distance between a number of links and shows how much elongation is present:

    Sprockets look alarmingly clean. LOL!

    I'd keep running those for a good while yet. The rear looks reversed, could be just my eyes on how I am seeing the photo.

    It's a clever simple gauge ... I like it ...

    Those sprockets are the originals as is chain with ~37K miles.
    I'm REALLY surprised that they are not far more worn out .........

    maybe the image of the rear got flipped somehow ... but it's bolted on like it came - never been off...

    The chain has had a really easy life ... :lol3 ... about 80/20 on/off road.
    and almost none of it in wet/mud. I lube it with 90 wt gear oil about once a week around town and every day on road trips...

    ....and you clean it with an F'n toothbrush all the time.

    The sprocket wears like that because the rollers wear away the back of the tooth rather than hook them forward.
