drz400s weird starting issue

    hey folks... this just started happening the other day out of the blue.

    mods:
    raptor petcock fix... so no vacuum problems or leaky petcock
    air box mod
    rejetted
    fresh 93 octane gas
    carb rescently cleaned
    valvles checked 1k ago
    11,500 miles

    used to crank just fine


    now:
    i hit the starter and it tries to turn and just hangs...display resets
    hit it again it tries to turn and hangs
    hit it consecutively (a few times) and it finally turns over

    when its warm it starts fine


    ---good battery, tested with volt meter... hooked it up to the car just to make sure on a separate instance

    Sounds like a bad battery connection (I'm sure you have already cleaned and tightened that) or maybe your battery has a problem that cause's it to test ok but fail under load? (a shorted cell?) The fact that it works well when warm is interesting. Maybe your starter solonoid?

    i checked the connections they are fine.

    that might be it... i dunno.

    Most times when I encounter these symptoms it turns out to be a connection somewhere. Usually the ground. Maybe the ground wire end opposite the battery? Probably hooks to the frame and could be loose.

    Electrical. Try removing and cleaning up the wires from the battery to the relay, and starter. 11K miles with water, road etc leads to poor connections. It takes time and energy tracking these gremlins down. Take them apart, clean them to bare metal, dielectric grease then re assemble. Plugs too, clean them with contact cleaner, re grease.

    My first inclination was battery or short(ground) as well. What happens when you wiggle the key while trying to start it... I know that sounds funny but could test for a short in the key ignition switch.

    around 8 months for the battery

    when I get off work I'll be cleaning all contacts... Keep you guys posted

    I think you guys were right! I cleaned all contacts, starter, frame, battery, solenoid. gave it a good carb deusche. let it sit for a few hours so it was nice and cold. cranked strong and turned over almost immediately.

    I think its fixed.... not putting the cart before the horse until it works perfect for the next few days. Let you guys know if its 100% or not.

    One more little tidbit from my DRZ days.In the spring my normally reliable DRZ began ocasionally missing then would run fine. On subsequent rides, it got worse and began to run rough, cough sputter backfire etc. I cleaned the carb checked jetting and valves to no avail. Then the bike just wouldn't start.:huh

    I came across a thread over at TT that outlined the excat problem I was having and said that it was a fried stator. To diagnose was as easy as disconnecting the plug that goes to the voltage regulator on the left side of the bike. You cant miss it. Anyway, after I did that it started right up and ran and the second I plugged it back it the engine died. So I replaced the stator with a Ricky Stator unit and it ran better than ever.

    Electrical gremlins are little bastards to diagnose, which is why I'm posting this here.

    The digital speedo/odo on a DRZS can drain the battery if the bike is not run for a while. Unless it is charged or run regularly, the battery can discharge and have a shortened life.

    I charge my battery once a week if I don't ride it.

    The DRZ charging system is marginal at best. The Battery is just to small, the voltage to battery has to go thru silly connectors to get to the battery and the Clock drains the battery too.

    Do the Free power mod on TT which basically bypasses silly connectors with larger gauge wire and puts regulator voltage straight to the Battery.

    Always plug in your DRZ onto a Tender. My stock battery lasted 5 years before I replaced it with a bigger one. I gave the old one to a buddy and he used it for another 6 months, but he didn't plug it in.
