So you're against private property rights and capitalism? Or is it just because you don't agree with the leanings of this particular property owner? :pot

(Apologies to the OP for also crapping in this thread. I like Maui. :deal)

NO, it's the Government that takes our land away. Private owners can post it no problemo. Except for the pinko commie nature nutz!

Not so much against property rights, just that they seem to buy up land, say they will allow access, and then don't. Their stated policy on hunting non-native species doesn't match with their actual practice. As I said above, there are many signs here in Washington on NC properties saying "Hunting by Written Permission Only" which is a joint venture with WDFW, access for increased enforcement. They get the increased patrols, but don't allow access. So what's pissing me off is the variance between their alleged access programs and their denial of access- after they have purchased the property.
I've heard they are also dicks about trespassers, but haven't experienced it. Hard to disagree with that, though.

Also, as I said above, "seems to me they bought the ranch to make money, not their stated mission of habitat protection." I'm not against capitalism, either.

    Not that simple.

Unlike most other private businesses TNC operates as a tax exempt entity,
while at the same time they are one of the world's biggest real estate business.

One of their preferred modus operandi is to use tax exempt revenue to buy huge chunks of land at fire sale prices that their lobbying for land use restrictions facilitates. Sell part of the land to the government for as much as they paid for the whole thing. Pocketing the rest of the land for almost no cost to them thanks to our tax dollars.

TNC is also into logging and mining business while at the same time scamming up tax deductible donations from fools that believe that they are all about saving the last great places on the planet.

If my money was not involved with their efforts to lock me out of as much land as possible I might hate them less.

I rented a Honda CRF250L from Mauimoto in January of 2015. Rode around the Hana Road. Was great. I paid for the guide, but you don't really need one other than to find a few places locals only know about. A little research could fix that. Mauimoto also has a flock of KLRs, nice but not essential for most of Maui. They also offer a Haleakala trip which I wanted to do, but an ice storm closed the park. Seriously. Also the north highway was closed for road work. Going back in December, will definitely rent from Mauimoto.

. . . . . . . And you might as well get used to it - EVERYTHING in HI is going to be more expensive as they're waiting for the tourists and expecting you and your $$$. . . . . .

    . . . . . . That is unless you backpack, sleep in a tent and hitchhike like I did . . . . . . & forego the touristy sheeeeyat . . . . . .

    GOOD LUCK ! ! ! ! !

We wanna do backpacking, walking, and tenting,we have family to use as a base over there and we plan on doing what you did,any details and recommendations? We looked at bicycles but you can almost rent a car for the same price,We'd rather spend my money on something other than wheels so public Transportation and our feet will be the trick, the 2 wheeled version isn't worth the cost, and we are changing our way of traveling to involve walking and less traditional ways to see a place.

I was doing the backpacking, hitchhiking, tenting thing way back in 1988 by myself, and on Kuwaii so no recent beta: Went out to the Napali Coast, gorgeous ! . . . . . . . I'd love to return and do the same, and more. Most of the folks who picked me up for rides were super friendly transplanted "locals" originally from the mainland; Had no trouble getting rides on Kuwaii; only stayed for a week, doing it again would stay at least two weeks.

Riding in HI is for the beginners------

Ride the Northwet and you will understand !-----:lol3

If you want a good D/S ride off the Mainland do Costa Rica--Australia would be even better.

    At any rate-------GOOD LUCK !
