Looking to do a long weekend trip from Petaluma, CA to someplace in NV. I was thinking Walker Lake area. Anyone have any ideas for camp sites in this area? Its about a 7hr drive for me and that is day 1. I am aiming for a 3 day trip.

    Any suggestions?

Camping along the lake is dry, need to bring your own water. Would do better to get a campsite at one of the RV Parks.

Thanks for the heads up. Are there any other sites east of there? I was thinking of heading over to Belmont, but that is like a 13 hr ride. I have a callused ass, but that is pretty epic (the ride not the ass).

What are the laws about camping along the road (or out of site of the road)?

much of Nevada is BLM land. camping is OK nearly everywhere. I'd try to be as invisible as possible from pavement just because. JB

West of Manhattan there is a nice place, Peavine Campground. Puts you on a nice creek. Nice spot, place is not heavily used. While they say no water, you are next to a creek that does support fish worse case you would just need to boil it to have potable water..

Belmont is almost across the street. Little store and a couple little campsites in town too.

It seems like a small town. All but a speck on google maps.

It is. Has maybe a dozen year round residents. Numerous lots folks park their travel trailers on their vacant lots. This is a sometime Bed & Breakfast -

Seems like a pretty cool place. I am definitely bringing the camera this trip.

Thanks for all the replies. It has helped out a lot. So far the plan is to leave from Petaluma, head out to Belmont via twisty roads. From Belmont to Death Valley, then through Yosemite, then back home.

What about Manhatten? I know one of those places has commerce. My job takes me all over Nevada, so sometimes it becomes a blur. Round Mountain has stuff there as does the liitle burgs up the road in Smokey valley.

Belmont Inn in Belmont is only service. No gas.

Manhatten had 6-8 room motel, bar, don't remember abouit food. No gas.

Carvers/Round Mountain has couple of gas, food, bars, and at least one small motel.

I have way points with some phone numbers on my Nevada Statewide Motorized Trail System on

Unless it closed down in the last year, you can get gas in Manhattan and the Bar does serve a limited menu.

Austin is good to go. I have always wanted to run along the Pony Express trail, Start in Shelbourne, out side of Ely, and just see how far I can go. Keep promising my girl to take her up thatway and see the Mustangs. Whenever I go up the 95,especially south of Tonopah, I always see them. Whenever I take her, she never gets to see. I think she is sure I lie about them.

Here is the link to the Manhanttan Bar & Motel. There isn't a lot to Manhattan, or the other surrounding communities of Hadley and Round Mountain. About the only other place I can located is the Miner's Saloon. Nearby are the communities of Hadley and Round Mountain. I think I spotted a grocery store in Hadley, but never got close enough to confirm. Folks from the area do their big shopping in Tonapah and their real big shopping in Bishop. Not what you would call a going concern.

That part of nevada has a lot of stuff but it is very spread out. Hadley/Carvers have several businesses. Couple of gas station/mini marts, several cafe/bars, a golf course (right out of "Tin Cup") and at least one motel but may be full on monthlys.

Manhatten and Belmont are old mining towns with lots to see. I was in Manhatten last Oct. and don't remember any gas and Belmont Inn (Very fun B&B with good bar) said Carvers was closest.

I am doing 6-days of Nevads in Oct. Middlegate to Austin to Eureka to Ely to Eureka to Belmont to Middlegate.

You might want to take Sonora pass(Yosemite without the crowds) to 395 (or Carson or Ebbets passes), then though Bridgeport, jog north to Sweetwater and over Lucky Boy Pass to Hawthorne (graded dirt) instead of I 80.....
