A group of us will be riding down to the East Coast Timing Associations Land Speed Trials at Maxton, NC on October 24 and 25th. Want to see some of the fastest motorcycles in the East? This is the place to find them. Some push 300 mph. How many of you Eastern NC'ers have been there before?

All riders are welcome! My family has a barn converted into a party barn near there, and we are going to be camping, hanging out, and having a good time. We'll ride in Friday, catch the races Saturday, and roll out Sunday morning. Acommodations are free - maybe pitch in a few bucks to cover the propane, and help clean up Sunday. Contact me if you are interested in joining in!

That place is in nTrailboss's backyard and really not far from me either. I have done some SCCA road racing there in the past but did not know they did land speed events there.

Since you are in the area, the Eastern NC ADVrider dinner is the evening of the 25th. Check out the thread in this section.

Thanks for the heads up, Ray. That is a bit of a trek to the north from where we'll be though. We got this big hopped up old barn out abut 10 miles from Maxton, near Dundarrach. I imagine we'll be burning some bird or burgers down there...

Hey, if we can get enough folks to RSVP, may be able to conjure up a pig to burn....

Eastern NC style, of course! :clap

O.k. - scuze the cross post... on the ECTA land speed trails in Maxton, NC this weekend...

No worries about the chilly weather, the party barn is heated. There is also a bathroom (but no shower) and a few couches to crash on. Pool tables, bar, refrigerator, the works. Mind you, it ain't the Lumber Bridge Hilton, but we WILL leave the light on for ya.... ;-)

I plan to head down mid day Friday. If anyone decides to come at the last minute, give me a yell at 803-493-1398

Good news. It looks like things are clearing up for Saturday at Maxton. The weather in the area is down to 30% chance of isolated thunderstorms for Saturday, and clear Sunday.

Folks going seem to be spread all over the place in regards to time and place coming.

The ride down late Friday afternoon could be dicey, so I am planning on heading down mid day. Anyone that wants to come along, let me know. I'll be leaving the Charlotte BMW / Ducati /Triumph dealership at 1:00 and taking back roads via the GPS... [IMG]

By the way, this is Sandhills country - the farm at the party barn has some trails, and a motocross track to boot - you might want to load up a dirt bike and come over.....

Saw both your bikes - but missed your note til we got back...

LOL - I saw one time of 29 mph....

Rain and commitments held but a few of us up.

The weather was actually pretty good for riding both days. It got a little misty on the way down due to wet roads, and there was a light rain a couple of times, but the rain had mostly cleared by Saturday morning, and the roads were beautiful and mostly traffic free! Stopped by the MOC dealership at 9:00 for a couple parts and a cup of Joe. Headed down via back roads down via 218, 205, and then secondary roads which take you through the lower Uwharrie Mountains area through Mt. Gilead and down to Ellerbe. FYI - There is a cool vintage Inn and Restaurant in Ellerbe, and an AMA motocross track. It might make a good destination ride for you some time while in the area....

Past Ellerbe there I trusted the GPS a bit too much - wound up dirt tracking in sand and mud up Laurel Hill road several miles. I was covered in mud up to me knees, and the bike looked like a true dual sport - the Tiger parts on Nessie were happy. Lots of fun on a nearly slick rear tire! Arrived at the party barn by noon, had a BBQ plate at the Lumber Bridge fire station (this is BBQ season for all the local churches and charities in that area).

Hosed off the mud, put on dry pants at the barn, and rolled up to Maxton by mid afternoon. The track was dried off, and the runs started by mid afternoon, and ran until sundown. I saw a couple of runs in the 230+ mph range. Back at the farm, there was a bunch of dirt bike wrenching going on, as there was an AMA motocross race in Ellerbe Sunday. My cousins race, and repair & mod bikes for other racers. Tommygun, one of the guys that runs with the Raleigh RATs, lives a few miles form the barn, so he came down for a bit and hung out. Tom and I agreed that we need to do an event down there again in the Spring when things open back up.

Temps were in the 50's Sunday morning, perfect for some excellent time trials! I helped my cousin mount new shocks on his old Knucklehead, and we were at the track by 8:30. There was a head wind Sunday, so the times were coming in a little slower. You can run anything you want at Maxton! The fastest run I witnessed was 238 mph, and the slowest was 29 mph. There was everything from full out bullet cars to an old clapped-out Pinto. It gave me a bit of inspiration to build something. One of the officials had a Hinckley Triumph T-100 that couldn't barely break the ton on the course (though his speedo was showing 115) and he was begging me to get the T-Bird out there and do some "respectable" runs. There wasn't enough rubber on the rear to pass tech though - so maybe next time. My cousin even offered to donate an old Gixxer 1000 he had kicking around to the project - need to checked the rules on that.

Anyone up for a "rain check" in the Spring?

Yep, it pretty much surrounds it now. They rent the barn out for weddings and special functions. It is pretty well equipped on the inside!

It's up again - a group is heading down for the April 5th.

I am recovering from surgery, but they have a thread going over in group rider.com
