Move along to post 18
Well crap. I'm a day late and a dollar short again.
If you didn't make it out and plan on trying it this weekend shoot me a PM.
That is if you see this.
Hmm, those "if's" just seem to be stacking up!
Did you make the scouting ride? How'd it go?
Sent you a PM.
It went pretty good. I followed up on a lead from "Knybanjo's" scout ride in an area that I had scouted year. Last year I turned back too soon and missed the very-unimproved road that I was looking for.(banjo found it) This opened the door to another unimproved road and ATV/motorcycle trail.
The trail got pretty rough and I was solo with no phone reception. It was really hard not to keep on going, but I'll have to save that adventure for another day.
I still need to go back and check it out when i'm not solo.
Here are a few pics from the last scout ride. DRZTennessee skipped work to help with the scouting a couple of weeks ago. He will be helping out with the "no guardrails ride" this year. We plan to scout again tomorrow.
Nice, looks like a beauty of road. How far from camp is that? we got a crew that is looking for forest service with the option of some trails. how about I buy you a beer at the RDV in exchange for information?
Is that an abandoned cabin?
That's Chestnut Mountain Rd near Damascus Va. It's about 50 miles away from rally central. There's tons of roads just like it between Damascus and Laurel Springs. Will gladly spill my guts on some of the most beautiful and adventurous riding around.
I'll bring my Gazetteers.
Hey Todd, Bone stock DR 650 w/D606s... Am I good to go on that,
or should I bring the XL500?
Drztennessee and I planned a another ride to check some new trails and survey the storm damage to the known trails. Three other riders joined us for about 8 hrs of some really good trail riding. Too bad we have to narrow that down to just a few good trails. Most of the ride RDV ride will be gravel, going to and from the trails. Eric, Dane and Lanny met us this morning for the scouting. Dane and Lanny had helped with last years ride.
We did have to do a little trail clearing.
Some of the trails were in really rough shape and were washed out pretty bad.
Drztennessee dropping it gracefully. The new bash plate came in handy today.
Here is one of the many creek crossings for the day. We even navigated one creek for about 100yds
Highlight of the day was when we found a new trail that was an old railroad bed. It wasn't all that long of a trail but the scenery was great.
Eric on the Husky 250
Hi Kirk, I think the DR should be fine. I had the biggest bike in the group today, 06' KLR with w/D606s. I'm trying to keep the ride 650 friendly. Especially since we are covering alot of miles. Some of the trails are poor shape this year due to the recent storms.
Yeah, it looks good. I posted before you finished the report, I think the 650 will do fine.
new helmets an improvement[/QUOTE]
Hi RB, I don't think its possible for me to wear too much gear..
Well, this is my last scout report before the RDV... I think.
This time I found a new observation point/dual sport trail on my last scout ride on 5/11/11.
I almost always find something new every time I ride the area NW of Laurel Springs. I hope everyone attending the rally, has a chance to get out and do some exploring.
On the way over to Laurel springs I stopped off in the mountains and got some snake venom.... I know what you were thinking.:eek1
Nope, not that kind. Although it probably not that hard to get.
Here is the new senic overlook.
Road improvements currently under way is the area. :eek1.
I had ridden by this place many, many times. I had no idea what they had to offer. So today I had a little extra time and decided to check it out.
It has a beautiful campground with a lake and beach area.
Bear Tree campground, off RT. 58 just outside of Damascus Va.
Oh yea! I forgot to mention, keep an eye out for a local nortorious sherrif from western North Carolina. He is bad news.
His side kick on the other hand is from Minnesota, she's a hoot.
Time to start scouting again.
I am planning a scout ride on Wed. the 25th (Jan.)
If anyone wants to meet and ride, we can meet in Shady Valley TN, Damascus Va, Mountain City Tn or White Top Va. area. I will be scouting the area NW of Laurel Springs. This is really just an excuse to go ride.
I will be passing through Shady Valley TN. around 11:00-11:30.if anyone wants to join at that point.
Well, looks like I had a taker for yesterdays the scout ride.....Cuttle met me in Shady valley and we set out for Damascus via a couple of nice dual sport roads. (this would be a nice way to go from Damascus to Shady valley with minimal tarmac.) From Damascus, take "Government Road", at the end take a left, then turn Left on McQueen Gap road/Harr rd. Then right on HWY 133 to Shady valley.(this route does not show up on Google maps)
My camera died today so Cuttle loaned me some pics for today's ride.
From there we checked on a couple trail heads, Iron MT road. Too rough for the tiger, not today.
Good spot for lunch. (also a good spot to check out the new character marks that I put on the crash bars) note to self, at least air down when running these tires on wet leaves
Then it was off in search of new abandoned railroad.
Shortly beyond this point there is a locked gate
Found some new gravel in the area...Its was freshly groomed and still very fast
