I still need some final pictures (and preferably from installation) in order to fully understand how to apply this to my own silencer... :cry

    Any help?

I can't understand how are you fixing this coiled steel into the silencer?

It's just slid into the Powercore. The spark arrestor keeps it in place, and it uncoils, so it doesn't rattle.

I hope i will be able to insert it the same way to a Q4, i can't say a thing since i don't have the exhaust yet.. Does anyone know how the Q4 is delivered? With which silent inserts, or with a spark arrestor? Or should I buycit separetly?

    Regards

Well, guys, I've chopped the insert down to 12" x 12".

It's a bit louder now, but is still taking all of the sharp snap off the exhaust pulses. Loud enough that I won't be going WOT in the hood... :)

Too cold to ride, maybe in 2-3 weeks!

Went for a short freezing ride today, with the 12" x 12" section in.

If I get decent power out of this, I've succeeded. As others have noted with the PC4, idle is louder than higher revs. Once the bike is under way, noise is down enough that 1/2 throttle can be used in a quiet neighborhood. Even running next to a convertible.

The sound is low-pitched and smooth. I tried to get a video as I drove away, but seem to have a bad SD card... I'll post something to utube ASAP.

The only other consideration is durability. I suspect I may need to find something that uses thicker wire for long-term life. That would also reduce noise more than this tiny wire mesh I'm testing with.

I tried this fix on a KTM 250 SX-F with a Rocket slip-on. I used the metal mesh core from a donalson-style air filter element. Very simple to make, results are spectacular. Takes some high RPM Power away, but added some low-mid torque. This is a good thing on a 250. No jetting changes required.

    Very impressed, thanks.

Did this today on my DG muffler KLR250. I used a section 48 inch long coil of the 1/4 inch cloth from Lowes (15 dolla for the roll, about half of it remaining). The DG can only fit about 16 inches in, unlike my wife who tops out at 6:D, so I did a 16 inch tapering to 3 over 48 inches. Id say its close to stock now noise wise and a bit slower than just the DG muffler. My spark arrestor cone wouldnt fit back in either. Much less annoying than before and lets face it, if we wanted high performance and light we'd be riding KTM690s:D

Got some video of my bike, today. It's a bit windy, sorry about that. I have the recording volume set as it was for the DB meter. Some of you might have trouble cranking your playback volume high enough to hear clearly...

Here's me taling into the camera from 2 feet away: http://youtu.be/il7l4cKMoo8

    Starting the bike: http://youtu.be/_6GXoq0tBhc

At 9 seconds, I blip the throttle hard, with the muffler pointed at the camera, 50 feet away. I take off gently, as I normally would if people were outside. Kickstand up gives some noise perspective. You can hear a jet in a landing flyby at the end: http://youtu.be/Ix7k8natlF8

I ride by at 35 mph, accelerate fairly hard (for city), ride by again (you can hear the mechanical noise as loud as the exhaust pulses), then get on it fairly hard riding away from the camera, and accel about 3/4 throttle toward the camera. I'm going almost 40 just before I hit the driveway: http://youtu.be/pAnBfaeP6AY

I'm very pleased with how the bike sounds when riding it. Growly enough for enjoyment, quiet enough for riding when people are outside.

Back in ´87 I installed a straight-through-muffler meant for a XT 500 (silver tank) to my ´83 KTM 500 GS Rotax. It was loud as hell, not even bearable back then. I solved the issue with a cone made from steel mesh and filled it with porous materia (pieces of bricks and similar), then closed the cone. I installed a piece of round aluminum to four cross-wires drilled through the endcap, on which the pin of the cone rested. Result: Sporty, but not too loud and it only backfired when I had to switch to reserve. Your approach with mesh is very similar in it´s effect.
