As a matter of reference, we're heading in a sorta Northwesterly direction, and that large mountain in the background that you just saw was Volcano Cotacachi at 4939 mtrs. We continued northwesterly towards the little towns called Apuela and then Penaherrara, for no particular reason. We subscribe to the loose concept of dead reckoning navigation and planning. We look at the map...pick a area that looks good to ride in for one reason or the other, then try to get there. We quickly are finding out that map accuracy is horrible and the gps is of very little use the farther out we get from the main roads.

We're riding in and out of clouds...

I thought there were no rules in Ecuador...

We're riding along minding our own business when Mike makes this awesome discovery.....

We're actually in Jurassic Park......the worm that eats the bird. We could actually see it's mouth it was so big...

There was quite a bit of construction going on in certain areas....damn engineers taking the twists and turns out of the road, preparing for touristas

That was a big honkin' earthworm!

Pretty much the same take on it. Only thing I might add is it appears to me in my limited exposure that they are currently gearing up for an increase in tourism with all of the infrastructure work including the new airport.

and we're tooling along these great mountain roads for several hours when we come upon this little town.

Comida tipica is just what the doctor ordered.

Empanada's con queso sprinkled with powdered sugar works just fine...twice.

Included in this stop are several interactions with some of the local personalities including this little girl that took a shining to EvilClown and his bag of tricks....

gives us a level of comfort when we're deep in the country. You never know where you're gonna get the next one. We usually have to depend on being able to find the local guy that sells gallons of gas out of his home. But it's always in the back of your mind and we seldom pass up the chance to top off when we can.
It's starting to get later in the afternoon...and that's another thing...finding a place to stay when out in the country. Little towns just don't have tourist facilities and we usually stay in places that traveling workmen use. So far that's been a room with a shared bath...but finding those can pose a challenge as well. So we start thinking about this about 4 in the afternoon, just so we don't have to do any night riding, which could be very, very bad.

We enter this very deep valley with steep walls on either side.

And hope we can find a place for the night...

Afternoon snack and fuel stop out of the way we're cruising along...

...checking out the countryside. With all of the 'rustic' surroundings along the way this police station sticks out like a sore thumb...

As seen above, we come across what appears to be a hotel/restaurant...

    ...and apparently a gas station.

We decide it may not be a bad idea to call it a day as yesterday things got pretty sparse in terms of choices late in the afternoon.

As Dave mentioned earlier and my notes reflect - it was pretty early in the day. ~3:45 local time. This means we have some time to kill.

We decide to try our hand at decorating...

Being taller, Dave chooses the bunk bed so he has something to bitch about in the morning after kicking the footboard all night.:lol3 There is the added option of a gear shelf, though.

Once the bikes are unloaded we stroll next door and grab a coupla ice cold warm beers and alternate between them and huffing our riding boots...

...before Dave starts whistling the theme song to this...

Mom was right. They did spoil our appetites...

...we're not going to be hungry for dinner for sometime. Might as well sit just back and reflect on the day. Update the map highlighting...

Maybe even break out the video camera.

Let's get started with our Honda/Suzuki/Freedom Cycles review...

This was early in the trip and I know a few things changed with the tank bag at least...maybe EC would want to elaborate...maybe not.

A few miles back, we came across this road heading up out of the valley....we discussed backtracking a little bit tomorrow and seeing where this goes....

in the meantime we decided to go for a little walk and explore the area. We had each been secretely hoping for a evening stopping place where we could soak in the Termales. According to the map, there was a little icon that indicated there were termales in the area... but we also were a little gun shy about finding a place to stay. There are no towns nearby, down the road, on the mapa.
