Well the country it,s self is packed with things to do and places to visit
Quito, the historic center and the Mitad del Mundo,a park on the Equator, the Teleferico a cablecar that,ll take you up the muontain overlooking the city for some spectacular views.
    Near Quito
Mindo,a village about 2 hours from Quito in the Cloud forrest, one of the best bird watching sites in the world with tons of hotels and hostals
on the road to Esmereldas heading north
Papallacta, fantastic hot springs once again hotels and hostals to fit most pockets, this is my personal favorite.
On the road to Baeza heading out to the jungle about 2 hours out of Quito

    Cotopaxi park
Drive your bike on the dirt up to the snow line of this live volcano about 45 mins out of Quito I think it costs about $10 to get in.A great day trip
you,ll pass by this park on the way to

    Banos
Another great little tourist town with loads of walks and trails and waterfalls in a climate 3 or 4 degrees warmer than Quito and once again at the foot of a real life volcano that at times will give you a pyrotechnic nighttime display for free.Tons of hostals and hotels for all pockets again.

I,ll keep on posting stuff as my duff old brain remembers it!!!

What do you think if we make this thread where all of South America goes?

Well the idea was that this and I guess the Panama thread would help people to plan there trips down here and that other people can add their info as well and these threads might get a bit lost in outerdarkness as there it,ll get mixed up with a whole load of other issues, what do you think John

Well, if you are willing to keep up the secretarial work like Glenn is doing in his threads and Nata Harley is doing in his, we could sticky this one as a "Places to stay" in South merica. Just Ecuador is a bit limited to keep it stuck, but the whole enchilada would be most welcome!

Maybe it might be a plan to have some other kind of section that would contain specific information about specific countries allowing guys doing international trips to get relevant information on repairs accomodation etc without having to search through reams of information on other threads.
    Just a thought.

That's on the to-do list for when it becomes necessary. No hurry - we've got plenty of room here for now.

My opinion is that a thread per country would be easier to navigate.

On the subject of Ecuador, a highlight for me was Lake Quilotoa (sp?) to the west of the main highway between Quito and Ambato. Way up in elevation, it is a volcanic caldera with some great hiking around the rim. A couple of rustic hostels right on the rim. Oh yeah, I'll recommend Alberts pub as well. Just don't try to keep up with him on his supermoto in Quito traffic.:D

Well what can I tell you all about Ecuador today.Let,s start with the 3 main regions those being Sierra/mountains La Costa/the coast and El Oriente/the east or in this case the jungle,Amazon jungle that is!!!
The Sierra has the Andes mountains running down the middle of the country from Colombia to Peru and features some great volcanos including Cayambe to the north of Quito,Cotopaxi to the south and Chimborazo on the outskirts of Riobamba once again to the south of Quito.
To the far south of the country you,ll find Cuenca one of the better maintained colonial centers in south america and past that Loja and Vilcabamba a very nice area where you can also cross the frontier and head down to Cajamarca,Peru.
The Coast has a ton of beaches all with warm water all year round.Starting in the north with San Lorenzo this whole area is a bit sketchy to say the least due to it,s proximity to some equally dodgy areas in Colombia a lot of cross border smuggling goes on and your spying gringo eyes will not be appreciated
Moving further down to the Esmereldas area there are a ton of ok beach resorts for all pockets including Atacames,Same Sua etc
Then further down again Canoa whitch is a small relaxing resort with a couple of good cheap Dutch owned places, then down to Bahia de Caraquez and on to Manta a rough old port, but I quite like it!!!
About 2 hours south of Manta you,ll get to Puerto Lopez famous for boat trips taking you out to see the Whales,I fancy a bit of that whenever I get the chance and from there on to Montanita the famous hippy hang out if you,re into that kind of thing.
Then 2 more hours gets you to Salinas a rich locals hangout where you can do some cheap Sport fishing and catch some real monsters, then to Guayaquil this is the second city and main port,it,s really cleaned up it,s act in the last couple of years and is now quite a nice place to visit if you like steamy climates. On to Machala another of hours down on the way to Huaquillas, not a great place but you might want to rest here before crossing the border at Huaquillas
I,ll get back to you all soon with the jungle section
    Cheers

How 'bout stickying a South American Travel thread with individual country threads alphabetized below it?

+1 One main link on main page that takes you to a page with countries or continents then countries. For the US might include states
All the info would be buried if all of S. America was combined.
For Ecuador you could have three to six areas. Amazon, Andes & Coast. They are all distinct in thier climates, cultures and things to do. I break these into north and south except the Amazon which I treat as one.

    Bump.

Anymore info out there? I'm sure others have been there since 2007 and have something to add/update.

Flying down and renting bikes for a 2 week self-guided tour. Anymore 'must do's'?

    Places to go/see?

    Places to avoid?

Is the Turtle's Head still open?:D Sounds like the OP may be in Columbia now...

No, Albert's in Colombia with a new bar and his minerals exploration business.

In Ecuador I would make a trip out to Mindo on my way to the coast and then I would head North to Colombia:wink:

Thanks. I'll add Mindo to the list of places to check out.

As for Colombia, not sure how that'll work out on a rental bike. May have to save it for another trip and concentrate on Ecuador this time around.
