    A novel advertising sign....

Soon we arrive at the top of a small mountain rise and from here it'll be the gateway to the M'hamid region. This makes a great viewpoint when one looks North across the spectacular dry plains. You'll see white stones on the mountain side just before you ride the short climb to said viewpoint.

    [IMG][/IMG]

Here's the 'gateway' before descending a short distance in the direction of M'hamid.

    Oh the memories...

I´m curious to see where you guys head after Mhamid... Foum Zguid? Merzouga?

You seem like a guy who's ridden a few bike WIBO, and I'm curious to hear your honest appraisal of the XTZ. I almost bought one when they first came out here in Spain a few years back.

    Hi Dom'

I remember reading your threads from your Maroc visit....

I've ridden a few motos for sure!!!....I've a Gas Gas 300EC at present for the more extreme enduro stuff in the forests/mountains here.

We didn't want to try the Foum route as there were a few riders with us and with which it was their first time off roading...so we went the Merzouga route...

I will certainly give an honest appraisal of the moto for sure at the end of the RReport.....(I'm just back from a ride out today as it was sunny here lol)...have to wash and change the oil on the moto after my Maroc jaunt....

Since we rode south over the viewpoint we see that the landscape starts to change from rock and silt to blown sand in amogst palms and shrubs/grass ....and clouds apparent.

    [IMG][/IMG]

We arrive into M'hamid to find the wind was kicking up sand which left visibility not so good.....I stop at the entrance to the town and wait for the rest to regroup. of course the usual hotel scouts arrive touting for business. We decide to follow a Nissan Patrol to see where he'll take us to stay. We ride through the town and onto gravel trails much like one finds in Merzouga.....I think that there may be potential here to find a place well away from the town centre.

As it happens it's too difficult and far for the novice riders to ride to and that, coupled with poor visibility, means we ride on back into the town and find a place just on the outskirts there.

The others can ride it no problem.....

    [IMG][/IMG]

..even 25yr old odd technology can do it...ie the good old faithful Africa Twin......

    [IMG][/IMG]

I of course get a Presidents award for starting my moto, putting it into gear, miss my footing and promptly gently put it into the sand...of course those in the LR are ready with a camera....so it's picked and then very soon after that Craig goes for a ride into the dunes, whereupon I can hand over the title as he boings over the bars...There might be a pattern developing in that when I get the award within 5 mins someone takes it from me.....I'm happy enough about that....

Phil rides along minding his own business when he just falls over.....

    [IMG][/IMG]

Noah kicks the Tiger to see if it's still alive......

Yip...and as usula in the middle of nowhere people arrive...the kids have sen us ride through the village and no doubt know,as word travels fast, that the EDC have arrived and there'll be free entertainment....

    [IMG][/IMG]

Ken,feeling better by this stage, dismounts and walks off to help the others in between bouts of laughter....he parks his moto like so with no side stand required....

So...we find an auberge(hotel) a long a row of other auberges, ride in and park up...150Dhm with 2 meals included. You can see that there are no clear skies and visibilty is not great when looking out through the entrance gates. We're only about 1km from the town centre if that...

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

We find these in the camping area.....

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

...and some Moroccan motos making a trip also....check the novel way of carrying tyre levers..

    [IMG][/IMG]

....and Phil shows off what he deems is his immense strength, stating that he can hold the door frame and stop it caving in...not only with one hand in his pocket but standing on one leg......

.......I told him he just looked like a hooker.....

    [IMG][/IMG]

Due to the amount of sand and grit whizzing about we find ourselves at a loose end...not possible to do much exploring,so off we go into town for a drink and to decide what's what for the next day if the weather stays the way it is....

So...Necessity being the Mother of Invention and all that....when you're in the middle of nowhere....here's how this auberge joins up the dots to make things work.....

    1. Find a water well.....shove a pipe down it....

    [IMG][/IMG]

    2. Then the water is pumped up by this.....

    [IMG][/IMG]

3.To be stored up here to give some pressure.....

    [IMG][/IMG]

    4.Before it arrives here.....

    [IMG][/IMG]

    5. BUT...the whole thing only works if this is working.....:D

Next day after breakfast we bail out of M'hamid due to sandstorm stuff still happening and head for fuel about 30kms north of M'hamid in Tagounite. Then we head off to Merzouga. You can see in the back ground that there's a heaviness in the sky as it were...this is sand whirling about in the air so no distant scenery pictures until we ride out of it fully.

    I put in 6.72litres after 139kms at 84.00Dhms (12.50Dhms/litre)

Here we can see Noah proposing to Ken and offering him a bottle of water as a dowry.....

    [IMG][/IMG]

We skirt around the town and pick up stone trails running through the palms. These soon open out onto the normal stone, shale and silt mix and speed can pick up. Again not much to see in the background due to the sand/wind.

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

We travel,to where we are stopped by the army(i.e. one man)on a remote outpost not too far I suppose from the Algerian border. We queue and he notes some details and lets us on through....

    [IMG][/IMG]

We ride on gaining altitude over slab rock, crumbling stones and hard pack.

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG

You can see that the going is great...it's now normal stone lane type stuff so higher pressures are required to negate the chance of punctures......the XTZ takes it in it's stride and can pull along from low down all day....

    [IMG][/IMG]

.Christophe tilts his head and looks menacingly at the camera...some of the group witnessed this, started to cry and ran off to hide behind the nearest tree....we were only able to coax them out after 15mins with the promise of drinking chocolate before they went to bed that night......one of them said that Christophe's helmet reminded him of a big blue bottle fly that once landed on the back of his hand in 1973...

We stop for a break and a convoy of 4x4's passes by also. There's a Mitsibushi Pajero in their group running in 2 wheel drive only.... 'cuz they broke it.

The going is still nice hard pack.

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

    The LR arrives

    [IMG][/IMG]

Then we all head off heading for an auberge I know called Marabout.......which will be
    about half way to Merzouga.

    Thanks for the kind words....

We ride on.....and on...and on...the going reduces from rock going to more desert type going,i.e. finer dust/silt/sand and it's getting brighter the further we get from M'hamid and it's blowing sand....

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

One of the group bent a finger nail back so they had to stop, call an emergency meeting and get a file from Caro in the LR......

We come across the same group of 4x4's who'd stopped for a coffee break.....we helped push the Pajero out of the soft sand. If you look at the skyline you'll see a water tower...this is where there'll be another passport control at a military outpost.

You pass through some fine silty sand, climb a small rise to your RHS and get your details noted. After this we head on,again in the direction of Marabout.

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

    The going opens out...

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

We stop to take some pics and a couple of kids appear out of nowhere..slap bang in the middle of the desert.....

So..we ride on on smooth going speckled with the odd small rocks and stone and the trail eventually joins the trail that you can take from Zagora to Merzouga. The trail joins where a long sand dune on your RHS,much like a wall,is, with a water tower that feeds an auberge. You can't see the auberge until you ride to the end of the 'wall'. Just close to where the trail joins Ken promptly bounces off his moto and twists his ankle. It's not possible for him to ride his moto any further. His ankle is strapped up and he's helped into the Land Rover.

I state I'll ride on to see if the second auberge has places for us. I recommend that we don't stay in the first as it's half finished and not really that good compared to the Marabout...and that it should only be an option if the Marabout is full up....It's here...

    [IMG][/IMG]

I ride off with the ATwin and check if the Marabout has places available...in the meantime I ask all of the the others to bring the 990i to the stone drive entrance to the first auberge and to wait there....they can check to see if it's just as nice as I remember if they wish!!!

I arrive back with news that the Marabout is still there as is the town a couple of kms from it....complete with the same street lights and palm trees that were always there(I was informed earlier that neither existed as they weren't noted on any GPS...ho hum :D) At this a couple of 4x4's and a CRF stop to see if all is OK.

I state that if you head to the first auberge on the stone drive and hang left, follow the sand dune line towards a triangular shaped mountain you'll see the Marabout....I say this because if you take the most direct route you'll have a long length of very deep soft sand to navigate which can catch you out..again the GPS says to go the sand route...anyone that wants to go that way then is most welcome, coming up to darkness...ho hum...After the sand you hang left and pick up the hard pack gravel.

Just at that the CRF whizzes by,I suspect, because he has an audience...I look over at Ricky, smile and stand and watch...he hits the deep fine sand and fish tails violently and backs right off without actually falling off.....he was probably following his GPS...:D

Ken is shoved into the LR.

    [IMG][/IMG]

...Noah rides the 990i and we all arrive at the Marabout...and Noah gets a lift back to get his moto.

    [IMG][/IMG]

Ken limps into his room to recuperate with a very sore ankle...so we take his picture and laugh some more at him.......after all he is now the reigning President of the EDC...d'oh!

    [IMG][/IMG]

He even gets the trophy string and washer necklace....

    [IMG][/IMG]

He takes a picture of a bat which is hanging from the ceiling and demands to change rooms as he's afraid of it drinking his blood during the night and he'll melt in the morning when sun beams touch his face.....or some one will come and kill him with a silver bullet.....or maybe that's werewolves or garlic bullets made from wood.......fired through a mirror....

    [IMG][/IMG]

They crank up the heating to heat water for shower....

    [IMG][/IMG]

We have a meal, which is always very good here...and then bed down in readiness to horse the 990 into the Land Rover in the morning.

The auberge closes up for the night..security is tight after all, there's one whole wooden post across the entrance....

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

The generator gets cranked up and basic lighting is provided....
