The 4 hours was spent up at Walker Valley ORV Park in the mountains here in NW Washington State. Several long time local riders were testing the bike. I was not present, but bumped into the group when they returned to the dealership. One of the owners was kind enough to offer the test ride. The terrain at Walker varies, all conditions including steep and stupid is available. I presume the testers didn't go too far from the trailhead, as several riders tested the bike. They came back all smiles. There was plenty of battery left for me. The power to weight ratio was similar to my 501. I don't know about top speed, but I saw 60 mph pulling away. The roads at Walker can offer 70 mph in places...

I have a few other obsevations about riding the Alta. I did not realize how much I rely on engine sound and gear selection in determining how fast I was going. It was disorienting at speed, difficult to judge velocity. Fortunately cutting the throttle produced significant "engine braking". The primary sound from the bike was from the chain, sprockets, and tires. Louder than a bicycle, but not a lot. This could be a safety hazard as other riders won't hear you approaching, especially in racing. The stepless nature of the transfer of torque to the rear wheel means that managing rear wheel traction is simplier and easier than a conventional motorcycle: the gear selection, clutch work, and varied torque output at different rpm ranges of the gas engine are no longer factors. The rider mostly coordinates throttle position with body position to achieve maximum hookup. It is really easy to get going way to fast. I am sure one could adapt with practice, but your first ride will be an eye opener. Leave pleanty of room out front.

In Japanese, “roku” is how you say the sixth ordinal, which means the electric superbike you see above, the Mugen Shinden Roku, is the Japanese firm’s sixth entry into the Isle of Man TT.

What you are look at here is the Mugen E.Rex, and don’t let the horrid dinosaur theme put you off, there is some seriously bad to the bone (sorry, couldn’t resist) pieces on this roost-maker......

MUGEN is a Japanese HONDA/HRC affiliated moto/racing R&D company... that has built some awesome mx machines over the years. (Johnny O'Mara's white watercooled Mugen RC 125 mx'er from 1980 was THE coolest and trickest bike of its day).

As far as the E.Rex goes... aside from that gawdy dinosuar theme composite bodywork/rear subframe and the goofy front guard/numberplate... you can see that much of the chassis/suspension/wheels etc. share the CRF motocross models DNA.

SHOWA/HONDA/MUGEN/NISSIN/DUNLOP have always worked hand in hand... so this is pretty good evidence that "big RED" are thinking seriously about an e-powered MX bike...

Sure is different, but I would ride it! Remember when Toyota made the Prius look so different because it was electric? Mugen was begun by a Honda relative, probably still linked. Honda has a sterling reputation for quality and innovation. Did you know that they build jets? Google it. This is the future. ( perhaps not the styling). Glad to see Honda involved. I hope to be riding a 200 lb electric off road bike with a 6 hour range in less than ten years.

Not short of handgrips for the freestylers...

Wonder where the battery hides? And how is the cog of these electric bikes?

Interesting point re the cog Mouse . Back in my motox days . I tried a flywheel weight on my CR250 (89) It was great for hare scrambles , but I only used it once on a moto x track . It totally changed the attitude of the bike when getting big air over jumps , the tap the rear brake or give it a rev to change the attitude of the front wheel had a totally different and at times ar$e puckering effect .

Following this thread with interest. I've just spent an hour watching reviews/videos and reading specs etc on current model electric bikes.

Only a matter of time before one of these silent runners are sitting in my shed . . .

Mugen probably just wanted to depart from the"lame duck" theme that the parent company have deployed in recent years... :rofl :imaposer
